One thing that I don’t quite understand about RVN’s coaching career is that he’s 48 and has managed less than 100 competitive games. He spent donkeys years coaching the PSV youth sides. Usually an ambitious coach (especially with a profile like his) are testing themselves at a higher level right from the off.

I still can’t get my head around this. Makes it sound like we’re world beaters lol

It's mad, really. Our play looks absurdly toothless for the majority of games but we're fortunate to have very clinical finishers who make the most of the few chances that come their way.

Still, RVN has an aggregate score against us of 8-2 over two games. They're probably the two matches in which we've looked least competitive both in the match and on paper.

And be didn't even want the PSV job. Bit of a worry that.

To a point I agree with some of that but Lampard, Gerrard, Vieira and Henry are proof that it doesn’t always work like that.

You could add Keane and Rooney to that list.

We’ve looked at the usual candidates, unearthed a few new names, had a laugh about some of the more surreal suggestions but it’s time to find a second wind, pull together, we can do this. We can get this to 100 pages!

I don't necessarily mind that.

There has been a steady procession of brilliant players who became bang average coaches after getting big jobs too quickly. Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney, Henry to name but a few.

Too few former players going into management have the self-awareness to build themselves up as any other manager would have to.

Roy Keane is a ****ing horrendous manager, isn't he? The fact he's a borderline sociopath doesn't help.

Oh, and Paolo Di Canio.

There was a real toxic culture in that old Dutch squad. Was he a part of it? Wasn't he also an arse to Ronaldo at utd? I'm sure i read something in a fergie book about him bullying CR. Not the best things for an incoming manager if so

This wouldn't surprise me especially in the early days where Ronaldo was a showboat, Keane was brutal with him, I will say though having watched today the interview he did with Gary Neville from a year ago, Neville and him openly discuss how he managed the transition from being a completely goal driven player who went mental if he wasn't supplied goals (and they spoke about his attitude then) to now where he has to manage a group of players, and to his credit Ruud did acknowledge that he has changed that side of him when going into coaching and management and now understands the bigger picture and says he much more enjoys the focus on the collective compared to his playing days where he would scream at anyone who made the wrong decision if he was near goal.

If it happens, this smacks of Van Nistelrooy being a 'big' name that the club wants rather than being a good manager. He might be, but has really shown those credentials to date?  Think there are better options to explore.

I'm a bit in two minds over this. The other way of looking at it is former players like Lampard and Gerrard got jobs way too big and by 48 are all but finished.

I thought the great news over Cooper being sacked would cause some euphoria and positivity , it didn't last 24 hours before bitching and moaning about prospective managers is in overdrive 😖

I don't think theres bitching and moaning, just people, like me, wary of this appointment. But I'll back him and I feel more positive than I did with Cooper, that is for certain.

RVN isn't one I'd go for

Easy. Especially given the speed the club move at.

So many successful PL managers haven’t had ‘PL experience’ and so many unsuccessful managers have had ‘PL experience’.

It's just another trope that mainly gets used by people that want to 'big up' the PL or are xenophobic.

The valid aspects are knowing the 'meta' of the PL; having decent media training and speaking passable English.

There could be a case for knowing English fan culture, but this seems to have changed a lot from just a few years ago.

I really don’t get the negativity with RVN he has managed PSV and did pretty well there and has been Assistant Manager of Man United and Holland plus had numerous coaching roles including the youth teams at PSV, he is a very good fit for a club that has invested in its academy, has world class training facilities and for me this is an appointment very much like Enzo, yes of course it’s not the safe option but it’s exciting and he has a far higher ceiling and potential than some of the other people we were being linked to. I think he will be a very rounded and forward thinking appointment and one that won’t be afraid to use some of our more talented academy prospects along the way.

This is a breath of fresh air after the disappointing and underwhelming recruitment of Cooper.

After Cooper, I’d be delighted with RvN

Corberan grinding his way to another 0-0 with just 2 attempts at goal. Not for me.

Wouldn't mind us grinding out some 0 - 0
