Completely correct. If we went for this in January it would be celebrated on the whole but it would be a bit of a red flag for me.

I don’t get the “we don’t need him” argument. we are a soumare injury or slip of form away from being stuck using 2 defensive midfielders. ( hamza, wilf, winks, skipp)

We need a second 8 who can offer more than just defensive work and sideways passes

You could say that about any position though. Depending on how Stolarczyk is getting on we are potentially a Hermansen injury away from Wardageddon but that doesn't mean we should be prioritising signing a keeper. As much as I think everyone would be happy to have KDH back, if we're spending the £30m+ the (almost certainly bullshit) article claims Chelsea want then it really needs to be on a player who undisputedly improves the first eleven and looking at how we set up so far under Ruud, I don't think he necessarily does.

It’s a loan though and it’s guaranteed quality over risking it all  on a tete.

you will use multiple midfielders regardless of injury so it’s really not the same as a keeper. But should something happen to mads we’d certainly be down

In that case even if we assume we're willing and able to send Edouard packing to facilitate it, it's the one loan signing we can make from a PL team with us presumably paying a fair chunk of his wages in the process, so again I would really rather we target someone who is going to be a definite starter in a position of more urgent need. As for guaranteed quality, we do know he can be a good player but his one outstanding season for us was a) in the division below and b) in a role that at this point there is no reason to believe Ruud has any great use for.

Far be it from me to stop people being sentimental about a player they like but if we're honest that's what the enthusiasm about him potentially returning is about, rather than him being an especially brilliant player at this level or one who fits in with the new manager's system.

We’ll have to agree to disagree on that one then. I’m thinking logically rather than just liking the bloke, I genuinely think he’s an excellent footballer and progressed massively. Absolutely no reason he can’t get back to being the combative midfielder we got used to when he first came on the scene… difference is that now he has improved his quality in both ball retention and end product.

Id be incredibly surprised if we signed someone better than him in January imo.

If we’re serious about staying up someone like him, another attacking mid, rb and striker will probably all be needed.

my personal shopping list would be a young right back to bed in. Return Eddie and get a striker on loan form a foreign league (I think that’s allowed?) .  kdh on loan  and then id probably hope we sign a winger from a bargain market like scandanvia or South America.

Get that right and we’ve not spent a fortune but have a much better chance

Not sure we need another midfielder tbh. Yes, Wilf is injured, yes Harry is injured and Bouba is suspended, but these are transitory problem with Bouba and Harry back imminently, certainly before Kiernan could join.

Agree that RB and CB are needed quite urgently.

I'd take all 3

Was always going to be the way. He was never a player that was good enough for a top 6 team.

I'd not be surprised if this was not an agreed deal from the start.

Shuffle the cash around to get under PSR limits.

He's got about 10 players ahead of him in the pecking order and Chelsea aren't exactly in need of changing things up. They're doing OK as it is.

Wanting to fight for his place is delusional.

Hopefully he realises before he's forgotten about and goes all Drinkwater.

I think Drinkwater had other issues, but KDH needs a loan somewhere ... he ain't gonna get many minutes at Chelsea. I have no hard feelings at all. We needed the cash, he got a pay rise, and there you go. I am not sure he is needed here anymore...

He doesn’t want to, and wants to fight for his place, allegedly.

And he’s pretty much guaranteed a European trophy winners medal in May

(expect a few of their better players to be added to the squad for the knock out rounds)

coming here and being in another relegation fight - I mean he could help save us but what if we went down again??

Surely, months in to your transfer, fighting for your place is the right attitude?

We don't have any box to box midfielders. BEK and FB are 10s, Skipp, Winks, Soumare, Ndidi & Choudhury. None of them are goal threats or creative.

It's not exactly a priority position but if we can get a desperately keen player back on loan with a favourable wages then we we should do it. Potentially lays the ground work to get him back in the summer too.

But we don't use them, either.

I don't think Ruud will be as rigid with his formation as Enzo was but I also think he'll be a lot more fixed than Cooper. How we're currently playing is how his PSV played and how he's likely to continue.

We're overly reliant on BEK and FB with Fatawu's injury. One swallow doesn't make a summer with Soumare either so having a talented and versatile goal threat is no bad thing.

He played 433 as well as 4231 pretty frequently according to this https://www.transfermarkt.com/ruud-van-nistelrooy/leistungsdatenDetail/trainer/36058

It all depends on the wages we'd pay but if we can get him in he's a great option, particularly if he is available in the summer.

Unless it's a chance of bringing Barnes back we shouldn't be chucking 30m at any player until July, definitely not KDH

Like you hint at, any new players need to be improving the 11 not just the squad depth. Has to be a centre back (even a loan for Maguire for 6 months would do) and a right back as priority. Everywhere else we aren't too terrible. Maybe a right winger if ones available too.

Lots of talk about attacking players, but we are actually scoring a decent enough amount of goals.. it's keeping them out that's a major worry ain't it
