They were really worried on 5live last night about how this happened as it’s a sign of how fragile safety and security is at airports.

I presume this was just a very unfortunate accident though ?

Apparently Trump would like the idea of the US joining the Commonwealth.

I'm beginning to think that the seeming envy/affection he has for the monarchy is something that could really be used by the UK to help neutralise at least some of his worst excesses.

I've talked about this before, but it's rather unreal how almost everyone takes the mechanics of civilisation - from the production line that produces a single pencil to a system like this - so effortlessly for granted.

"In an urban society, everything connects. Each person's needs are fed by the skills of many others. Our lives are woven together in a fabric. But the connections that make society strong also make it vulnerable." - Narrator, Threads.

I revisited 'Threads' a few weeks ago....first time since the 80's .....still as powerful as it is bleak.

This is entirely hypothetical, but Russia has a large cyber capacity. Wouldn’t be surprised if a cyber attack slipped the net. All a hacker would need to do is tweak the power (somehow) to affect the system.

North Korean hackers brought down a whole NHS trust a while back and barely anything was said.

Any disruption is the Achilles heel of a JIT (Just In Time) economy with resilience seen as an expense that is to be mitigated as much as possible.

Yep. Don't bother to spend on redundant systems, because you won't need them...

... up until the day that you do.

Thing is, why expend valuable cyber teams and leave a trace when you can hire local hoods and tell them to "Molotov cocktail" a couple of sub stations? Much cheaper, you're removed from a direct association and you can instruct at different locations at will.

Leave the cyber teams to concentrate on the military assets - that way you keep both civilian ops and military ops busy/ tied up?

I read on BBC website today about the rising popularity of Extreme Daytrips. More people not seeming to care that much about the environmental impact?

The turmoil around the world and very real prospect of war has taken the gaze off climate change. The mentality is probably along the lines of, 'we'll be scratching around for decades, rebuilding and barely surviving. Might as well spend an afternoon in Barcelona while we can.'

I think it striking that some people not only do this stuff but are boastful. I suspect that any thoughts about anything than their own personal enjoyment doesn’t cross their mind

The US would win gold medals at pretty much every event at the Commonwealth Games so it's a No from me.

I think it's also because some people simply view the problem as abstract right up to the point it punches them in the face. Again, empathy not progressing beyond ones line of sight spatially or temporally.

That being said, the massive elephant in the room wrt carbon emissions and their consequences is still energy generation; international travel, while a piece of the puzzle, is a rather smaller one.

So instead of sending asylum seekers to Rwanda, this labour government wants to send them to the Balkands now.

It's almost like no matter who people vote for, the same crap happens.

Agreed, a polite no to the USA. Good thing about the commonwealth games, gives smaller nations the chance to win something compared to say the olympics.
