I just think we can do a lot better.

I would probably agree and I think it would be too big a step up, a massive gamble, but I also think we're not far off hitting a point where we'll consider this a decent appointment either.

Good shouts but I think being a pointer is about more than just pointing. It's a whole style of play. I think also you have to be a midfielder which discounts Vardy.

I know what you mean about it having to be a midfielder. These pair do it quite a bit (and fvck all else)

Yeah Winks is a proper pointer.

Watch Vardy (live) next game and specifically watch for the pointing. It is off the scale.

No and it actually amazes me that some people complain when we look at the same managerial round about and say we should go for an up and coming manager but then laugh at anyone who suggests one

In this case it is probably partly at least down to the fact he is English and doesn’t have a fancy name. People would probably be more receptive if he had an exotic name.

Threads like this just goes to confirm how low we have fallen, Ritchie Wellens ffs..

Or is the view you have displayed the actual problem?

Look he may turn out to move further up the leagues and become a really good Championship manager or he might not. He might make it higher, he might not, who knows. What is obvious is he is doing well at whatever level and challenge he faces. He is also young and on the way up and plays some good stuff.

I just feel like if it was someone called Ricardo Vellens, working up the leagues somewhere like Portugal or Scandinavia, people would sit up and take notice but due to his dull sounding British name and it being in our own leagues, some are scoffing at the idea.

Honestly, we need to appreciate where we are in the market right now. Players and managers alike are seeing us as a generous pay day and we are only attracting those after said pay day or just outright desperate.

Is it such a negative to return to what we did previously and look for those on the way up, who want to be here and have a lot to prove?

A lot of the above could be applied more generally and not Wellens specifically but presumably you’d be more enthusiastic about a Gary O’Neil or Russell Martin type? You’d rather someone who had experience but failed than someone with something to prove?

Always thought Kingy was our biggest pointer. I need a definitive answer now.

Good point...

Get where you’re coming from, kinda.

But there’s a very distinct difference between Wellens or Danny Rohl for example.

If we did appoint Wellens I don't think we should throw instant promotion as part of his first task. Focus on rebuilding the squad and bring stability to the team and even the club, look to reduce the wage bill and look to utilise the academy players as well create a youthful side for the future. Maybe look to target a top half finish in the championship.

Like hearing his honesty in interviews

Would Wellens name even be mentioned if he wasn’t a former player of ours?

Managers doing fairly well at clubs in a lower division do get their hat thrown into the ring

Wasn’t impressed with his Leyton orient side tonight. Was at the game.

Burton bullied them.

If we gamble again a little like we did with enzo id rather someone like this who understands the club and has had a decent career so far. Hasn’t been afraid of a tough job, quite dynamic as well.

What does ‘understands the club’ mean? The fact that he once played for us has zero bearing on whether he’d be a good manager for us.

Not saying it has an impact on how well he does the job, just want a genuine gaffer I can get behind

Was interesting that a few mention Salford as a failure, he actually won 50% of his games and averaged 1.6 points per game.

My main reason for wanting us to go down this route, if we cannot attract someone like Rohl or Rosenior, is he has done the hard yards in the lower leagues and managed at some challenging clubs, whilst still getting them playing in a progressive but successful style. He also seems to have that similar character to Pearson where he takes a club by the scruff of the neck, would be a great appointment if the club have the stomach for the type of rebuild we need and something similar to both times we appointed Pearson.
