Makes sense to sell him.

If he went, pretty sure our current longest serving player would be Ricardo (who could also leave)?

Other than him, the entire squad (barring youth players) has barely been here more than 2-3 years.

We need to hit the refresh button, I was looking a the squad that got promoted under NP, there were 4 player who had been around more than 2-3 years.

The year we we stayed up the majority of the squad sign by NP.

At the moment we have a mis-match of player signed under Puel, Rodgers, Enzo, Cooper, RVN, just think we need a cull.

Goes to show what a shambles we are that what you say is the case (although the likes of Daka, Soumare and Vestergaard have been here longer) and yet we still have so much deadwood, on huge wages and a poor attitude across the squad.

We should have learned after Rodgers and yet we had Maresca add more deadwood with Coady and Winks as well as the new contract for Vestergaard, and then Cooper with BDR, Skipp, Ayew etc.

And f***ing Faes is only 3 years until the 5 year deal we gave him!!

Winks was an integral part of getting us promoted.

Here is a definition of deadwood in a sports context.

In the context of sports teams, "deadwood" refers to players, coaches, or staff members who are no longer contributing effectively to the team's success. These individuals might be:

  • Underperforming relative to expectations or salary

  • Injured or aging and no longer at peak performance

  • Taking up roster spots or salaries that could be used on more productive members

  • Not fitting into the team’s strategy or culture

I 100% class Winks as deadwood based on this.

Next season, in case you hadn’t noticed, we’ll be back in the same division where he was so successful under Enzo, playing for a manger that may well want him to play in the same style.

Oh thank you for that, I hadn’t realised!

Regardless,

Underperforming relative to salary? Yes, he has been paid a premier league salary since he joined so regardless of what he is doing in the Championship, it’s not worthy of the salary.

Taking up a squad place/salary that could be used on a more productive, or better value for money is a better way of saying it, replacement? Yes, we could definitely use the wages better.

Not fitting into the culture? I meant we have not positive culture around the club anyway but having more like Winks sure isn’t the way to fix that!

So he is deadwood and you won’t convince me otherwise.

You crack on then, rather than being a miserable git I’ll wait till next season and see how he performs before I make my mind up.

Not quite sure how suggesting that we could have 2/3 positions covered by the wages taken up by Winks, therefore making us stronger is being a miserable git but ok…..

Likewise, if you want the squad littered by players on 80k p/w in the Championship, who that is their level, you can also crack on. But quite clearly having players on high wages who either aren’t good enough for the next level or don’t give a damn is kind of what has got us into the PSR mess we are in, as well as relegated the first time (the not giving a damn bit).

Not too keen on the mindset tbh, it’s a change or bust atttitude.
We cannot be making wholesale changes every time we replace the manager, it’s not feasible, especially right now.

We have lots of players, any manager should be checking what we have, how they relate to his preferred way of playing, and tweaking the players/systems as much as possible, before he gets the Argos catalogue out imo.

Winks isn’t good enough to be a prem starter in my opinion but he is way too good in the championship for us to ship out considering some of the other players on similar wages. Him in the 6 this year and next year we find someone with similar ball skills and a touch more physicality

Did Winks only become a problem once RVN had a problem with him, bearing in mind none of us know what actually happened or was said?

I do seem to remember that he got motm a few times on FT during Enzo time, now if he’s not prem standard will we actually be able to sell to a prem club or would the only option be another championship side & are people then happy to sell probably the best player we had last time in the championship to a rival?

I don’t want Wilf to leave. On his day he’s one of the best defensive mids around.

Doesn't have many of those days now though. He's given us some good times but now is the time to leave.

Unfortunately the last of those days was in 2021. Fair play as hes had great moments for us. But he is nowhere near the player he was and its time to go.

I reckon that his new deal had some weak relegation wage reduction in it so that he's quite likely our highest earner now and that £9m joke of a release clause being very publicly is just his get out clause if a club matches wages good enough to make him relocate.

Can imagine he's very settled here and if a Villa, Spursy, Man U come along he's off, otherwise it'll need to be very good offer from Europe.

Think it'll be a while as he'll weigh up all offers

Pains me to say it...but I totally agree.

I think we have seen the best of Ndidi and £9m whilst not a great fee it's still a fee we can put to use ( pls someone correct me but, wouldn't we have "paid up" his original transfer by now, so this is money that can go into the new accounting period as "vertual profit"   or do I have this hideously wrong? ) say for a much needed striker.
