Sheffield Wednesday expert compares Danny Rohl to Carlo Ancelotti
In his two seasons at Sheffield Wednesday, Rohl has cemented himself as one of the best young managerial prospects in English football, after steering the Owls to safety in his first season in 2023/24.

Despite the ongoing financial crisis at Sheffield Wednesday, Rohl stabilised the club to a comfortable mid-table finish this season, playing a brand of football that is both attractive to watch, but pragmatic enough to earn points.

Rohl’s coaching acumen has seen Sheffield Wednesday expert, Alan Biggs, liken the German to Ancelotti.

His point centres around Ancelotti’s lack of standout football philosophy, which Ancelotti has explained: “I don’t have a fixed style. My approach changes depending on the players I have and the opponent we face. Football is about decisions. If you’re too rigid with one way of playing, it makes it easier for the opposition to find solutions.

In comparison, Biggs told the Sheffield Star: “If it’s good enough for Ancelotti, it’s certainly good enough for Danny Rohl as a key reason why for so long the discussion around Sheffield Wednesday has been play-offs with, at best, a mid-table squad.

“You see managers routinely dropping into jobs spouting ‘their philosophy’ and a determination to bend their new team to it.

“The point is this is only possible if Plan A and all its parts is good enough to dominate most opponents regardless.

“That is palpably not true of Wednesday and it’s only by running through the alphabet that Rohl has very skillfully enhanced the face value of his squad.

“Clearly he’d prefer to be high pressing and threading passes from the keeper. But he’s buried his preferences, and you get the feeling that Ancelotti would be the first to applaud.”

Whether Rohl goes on to better five-time Champions League winner Ancelotti remains to be seen, but what is far more certain is that the German is one of the best managers in the EFL, and one who can mastermind an automatic promotion for Leicester in the 2025/26 Championship if appointed.

I can't think of many that have been proven managers of a 2nd tier club to then be an assistant at a PL one? 

Michael Appleton, Oxford (3rd tier?) to us had similarities.

 

Although the Daily Fail seem to have confused Rohl with Pedersen.

Yeah, if you read it, later in the article,  it definitely says they want Pedersen as the number 2.

 

I think they do this type of stuff on purpose to get more readers

2014 - Video analyst for Leipzig first team

2016 - Assistant manager for Leipzig first team

Starting out as a failed lower league footballer who retires from playing at 21 and becoming a video analyst for Leipzig school kids and eventually being assistant manager at Bayern and Germany to Sheff Wed manager means he must have excelled at every role he has had. It's like cleaning the offices at Apple at 20 and 15 years later you're the CEO.

 

I'd much rather have someone who has started from the bottom and had to excel to get this far in the game than an ex player walking into his first job because he's a big name like Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, etc.

I think the main benefit of Rohl is that his football will compliment the strengths of the team far more than other candidates we are linked with, players like Mavididi and Fatawu perfectly fit the role he gave to Gassama (who I wouldn't mind signing if one of those get sold) and players like Monga will be set free by him, I even think with Daka's pace, if we can just get balls into the box for him to finish like he was doing at Salzburg it might actually help him also. He gave something like 8 debuts in the cup/league last season to youth players so he's not afraid to give the young players a try. 

Fans would be happy to know that he has also played inverted full backs in the midfield when needed, using Pol Valentin and Marvin Johnson tucked inside in midfield, so if Ricardo stays it's perfect for him, he does like his keepers to play with their feet a lot though so question marks over if Stol can step up. 
 

Can you imagine if Daka suddenly became like a prime Vardy superstar under Rohl?!!?

 

I mean it’s not gonna happen but still.

If it is him, hopefully Our Glorious Leader can set some standards at the club and reasonable requests for professionalism are answered.

Very methodical and well executed career plan. Great if he comes to Leicester but, you also have wonder, looking at his CV, why would he  ?   The place is a top down widely acknowledged burning hay barn in all kinds of hierarchy, financial & on field pickles. 

 

Its a risk he may not need to take.

Same reason he was prepared to go to Sheffield Wednesday despite it being a shitshow. We’re a decent stepping stone and that’s not a bad thing.

I still think Leicester is a big step up from Sheff Wed and a great job for an aspiring manager.

 

We still have mostly the same squad that won it 15 months ago. Some brilliant young players at this level in Hermandsen, Fatawu and El Khannouus who will be amongst the top players in the league in their positions if not the best. Great talent like Nelson, Monga, Alves and Evans coming through and players who excelled last time in the Championship like Vestergaard, Riccardo, Winks, Ndidi and Mavididi. 

 

Expensive signings like Daka, Faes, Skipp, etc and another half dozen players who should be at least play off players. No doubt there will be money to spend on a couple of players who walk into the first XI and who Rohl wants but were out of reach in his previous job. If I was an up and coming manager I would be very excited about this job at Leicester.
