Can't wait for the British "ex-pats" (i.e. migrants) who are living abroad under reciprocal ILR arrangements to vote for Farage and not realise their susceptibility to being deported in the other direction and start crying about woke Europhile traitors "wot ruined brexit"

Do any other countries have no ILR option? I'm trying to find if there are other examples of a rolling e.g. 5 year visa but can't find any.

ILR is specific to the UK.

In the EU there is Permanent Residence, which gives pretty much the same things (access to public funds, right to vote, etc), but unlike ILR doesn't have to be applied for, it is given automatically if certain conditions are met.

If you can't accommodate Bogdan and Marcin in your own house, then they're not welcome in mine. We can always get Bert and Fred in at merely twice the cost and do almost as good a job!'".

Truly this deserves more than one rep point

This sentiment still holds true with Reform:

One of the big claims is that "immigrants don't integrate!"

Pretty much like Brits with their fish n chips and pubs in Spain who can't speak a word of Spanish beyond "Uno cerveza por favor".

That's a bit discriminatory Trav!

Lucky you.

I've got a spouse and child with citizenship of an EU country which helps me settle there, but I'm not that confident that if reform get in and enact this plan a) there won't be reciprocal measures against British citizens in the EU if they try anything against those with settled status here, or b) we'll even be able to move back to the UK if we need to.

Hopefully it won't come to that, we still have just under 4 years before the next GE and it would be very difficult for Reform to maintain this momentum for so long. Farage likely to get bored and as lots of people have said on here, most of them are not up for the level of perseverance and graft that it takes to be in government. Even if they did get a majority or form a coalition, Farage always falls out with everybody and it would collapse within months.

If this is so, it's likely because it's overshadowed by the news that the most powerful man on the planet is indicating that a commonplace painkiller causes an entirely unrelated condition (to say nothing of the ableism attached by implying people on the autism spectrum are somehow defective and need to be fixed), and his UK counterpart floating ideas to make any migrant to the UK not of the right "type" (no matter their contribution to the nation) persona non grata.

One of the top stories in the Guardian online and BBC Europe News this morning.

British media is obsessed with America and reports very little on Europe so obviously you're not going to hear loads about it.

Yeah, Anglophone bias plays again too.

British politics has proved the Mick McCarthy rule the last decade - yes it can get much worse.

I don’t share your optimism sadly. Reform will be packed with Maga style politics and probably have foreign money coming into them by 2029, and at that point where Farage won’t actually have to do much work and will just the face behind some massive authoritarian overhaul similar to Trump with Project 2025. Farage is a “reality tv” politician like Trump and would just revel in the chaos and spectacle of it all.

The only media that's ever really covered the world properly has been channel 4 news, but I'm guessing you probably aren't a fan of C4.

Oh I do hope not, remember there's only two parties in the States, whereas here I'm guessing around 60% of voters would be moderate/liberal/left across different parties. There's be no mandate for what you are suggesting and you'd be looking at wholesale public sector strikes probably. As a people, if we don't want extremism, we organise against it. No Pasarán!

Trump's first Presidency was absolute chaos, it's only when Susie Wiles was appointed his campaign manager in 2022 and is now his Chief of Staff that everything became more organised. She runs the show.

Fair enough, I just know a lot of right leaning people don't like it and the things I've read from you previously lead me to think you're probably right wing.

C4 tended (I say tended as I have no idea if it still airs in the same way now) to go into much more detail on subjects it covered, giving much more factful and inciteful coverage than other networks, which isn't to everybody's taste these days.

What do you like for your news? Cbeebies?

Any news outlet is very subjective, I used to rely on BBC an hate ITV - BBC have gone completely doo-lally the past few years so try and steer clear

The fact that everyone seems to hate the BBC bias tells me that they must be doing a pretty decent job.

Doo lally in which way? It's another outlet certain parts of the political spectrum don't seem to like, despite the fact pretty key figures from that part of the spectrum have been effectively promoted over all others. Bit bizarre to me. The only doo lally thing about them is they seem to be trying to keep everybody happy while keeping nobody happy, but I don't think that's because of bias tbh.
