Was honking against Stoke but excellent (bar a couple of min blips) last night. Probably still been the best of a bad bunch but got plenty more to give. He desperately needs to work on his heading as his judgement of the flight is awful and he gets bullied out of top many aerial duels.

Much better last night.

That performance against Stoke though? Not sure even Faes or Vestergaard have ever been that bad!

Faes has had games where he stopped trying to defend when we went 2-0 down. Nelson has never been that bad.

Agree with all that.

Cant think of a time when ive watched him and thought he was any better than anyone else in the back line.

I guess the only difference with him is that hes the only one that hasn't reached their ceiling.

And didn’t cost over 10 million

I wonder how many fans who arent happy with Nelson's performances will be unhappy when he forces a move or runs down his contract to join a better club.

If he runs down his contract are we still eligible for a fee considering he's home grown and under 23? Not that it would come to that, or be significant in that scenario anyway.

What about against Stoke? He doesn't have any pace and jogs with no purpose, not to mention his heading and strength 1 v 1. He can block but not seen anything to justify the hype. He's part of a defence that hasn't kept a clean sheet in about 15 years so that says it all really.

What about last night? As always because you "hate him" you cant comment on him without bringing it back to a negative.

He won’t run down his contract.

Its the least likely of all scenarios, but there's always a small chance.

Much better from him last night although he looks like a lot of modern centre backs where his ability on the ball in teams that have it far more will cover up his defensive frailties.

You see it with a lot of "top" defenders when they suddenly have to defend most the game. For example, I still think if Maguire went Man City he'd be spoken about in completely different terms because we'd have seen so much of his on the ball stuff.

Nelson suits the modern game, but he has a hell of a lot to prove with the defensive side of his game.

It's his first proper season in the team. His breakthrough year. You can't seriously compare him to the long in the tooth pros he's stood next to. He's doing a really good job for his first year. He'll only get better with experience.

You literally must be a family member or Ben himself lol

He was excellent last night. I expect him to flourish under Rowatt

100% this read, something a few months ago where Rowatt said Oxford would of gone down without him.

I mean, yeah, better than some of his other games but 'excellent' ?

He was steady..nothing more.

I'd go along with this. He was steady and for a young defender that is good enough. Just had a bozo left back and brain fart partner.

He might have a 50p head and he needs to improve that, however no centre back at the club is going to find it easy, playing with Okoli.

You’d be playing on edge constantly.

He needs a proper experienced defender next to him. I like Vestergaard in relatively comparison to most of this forum, albeit he has serious limitations. I think Nelson is a similar sort of player and won’t ever really be anything more than that.

That still most likely makes him out first choice centre back.

He needs a Johnny Evans type next to him, to get the best out of him, as Soyuncu did previously.

gave away a needless penalty and god only knows what he was doing letting two crosses just go over his head.Good goal and an ok performance , far from convinced at all

Barring the penalty, didn't put a foot wrong at all.

Superb defensive display tackling and intercepting. Probably his best game for us?
