I'd have him starting in the league as well with El Khannouss playing box to box but it's very unlikely to happen with him not making the bench currently.

At least if he gets some starts for us in the cup under his belt he can impress and hopefully put himself in contention for the matchday squad or even a starting position.

I would gone that way, El Khannouss at 8, Alves as an 8/10

Only going tonight so I can see Monga, Alves, Nelson, Evans, Page and Aluko get minutes.

I would love to see this, but can only see it working with a better defensive midfielder than what we currently have available. Who could probably only come in if Winks is sold.

What next for Will Alves after Leicester City absence with Marti Cifuentes 'sure' over role

Will Alves has a role to play at Leicester City this season, Marti Cifuentes has said, despite the young attacker missing out on involvement against Sheffield Wednesday.

Alves showed his ability and his Championship credentials in moments last season when he enjoyed his first proper spell in a senior squad after heading out on loan to Cardiff.

The 20-year-old was expected to return to City and take up a prominent position in the team following the club’s fall into the second tier, but he was an unused substitute in the final pre-season friendly and then did not make the bench on Sunday, albeit he was with the squad at the King Power Stadium.

But Cifuentes says Alves will get his chance this term, and so he could be in the matchday squad for the Carabao Cup first round at Huddersfield on Wednesday (7.45pm kick-off).

“I’m very happy with Will,” Cifuentes said. “He’s had a very good pre-season.

“It’s my responsibility that he didn’t play any minutes against Fiorentina unfortunately, but that’s one of the consequences when you have such a big squad.

“He’s doing well. I like his dynamism, his capacity to play in between the lines. He can play on the wing as well if we need a certain kind of winger.

“I want him to be here and I’m sure he will get minutes to show his quality.”

Alves came up through the ranks as a central attacking midfielder, but was used out wide by Cardiff last term. That’s also the position in which former City boss Ruud van Nistelrooy saw his future.

However, in Cifuentes’ system, Alves is more likely to be used centrally, and so would be a rival to the likes of Bilal El Khannouss and Louis Page. He would only be used as a winger in certain circumstances.

Cifuentes added: “It depends on the system, not the formation, but sometimes you might have a winger that you want to come inside, and that’s something he can really do.

“If it’s to play more in a wide role as a winger, perhaps his best position, in my opinion, is more central. A role that’s about having an influence in central channels, that’s more appropriate for him.”

so in other words, if Bilal leaves, he’ll get a gig then

* when Bilal leaves

Pretty likely someone in the Prem triggers his release clause before in expires in a few days (assuming the rumoured clause actually exists)

Unlikely imo they will probably think they can get him cheaper after it expires but then we can play hard ball if we think he will be a difference in terms of getting promoted or stagnating in the championship

All depends on how fecked we are financially I guess. I agree with other posts on here that a lot of our recent activities are posturing to the EFL/PL that we are doing all we can to comply but that its simply not possible in our situation. Let our best ever player leave with no deal offered, selling players that we are getting offers for, and not buying for fees/offering large contracts to any players… all to show we have changed behaviour and mitigate any case against us

We don’t have any number 10s - not even sure bilal is one - to not be on the bench as even back up number 10 tells its own story - that being said I hope he starts there tonight and has a blinder and gets a chance Saturday so we have another youth player that can truly cut it - who wouldn’t want that

Fair play, making the journey to huddersfield on a Wednesday is not for the faint hearted!

I’m encouraged that Cifuentes sees Alves as more a central player rather than an out and out winger. RVN incorrectly said he was  a winger and he was the one that loaned him out.

Young but not a kid .

To be fair I was never insinuating he was a kid. But a 20 year old is still young in football.

Like someone else has said he did lose over a year to that horrific assault.

For anyone watching did he have a stinker? Is that why he’s been hooked early?

Just not really been in the game, nothing major. Probably just good to give both him and Page a half each.

Difficult for the kid

Can’t get into a rhythm if he isn’t playing and doesn’t seem to be able to hit it cold

possibly best for him to have a loan till Jan

He’ll be needed. El Khannouss can’t play 90 mins every game.

Which made him one of the star performers in the first half
