Preferred it when they didn't have a list and everyone was eligible.

I think Rory has said himself that if he doesn't win it after what he's achieved this year, he never will.

Although he's the obvious choice for golf fans like you and me, the fact is that golf is still a minoirty sport and most people aren't interested in it.

Faldo won SPOTY in '89 because the BBC still showed the Open, Masters and RC, but now it's all on Sky many people don't get to see Rory's talent.

Come on you don’t need to be like this buddy

Well the last 5 winners have been female. That’s a trend whether you’re looking for one or not

I’m obviously not saying some or all of those winners didn’t deserve to win but for me it was outrageous Broad didn’t win it a couple of years ago.

Such is the push the BBC are making on for example women’s football, it should be of little surprise really.

It could be that the most recent winners have benefitted from it being sports that the BBC have the rights to broadcast and that there’s a correlation there too, which would be logical.

Either way, I’m unsure of any other worthy winner over Rory this year, given the career grand slam and how much of a monkey Augusta has been on his back

You've been peeping, haven't you? Get back in the women's changing rooms, you perve!

You're also going to look very silly when Rory comes out as trans.

Regarding the "white" bit, it looks like the vast majority of winners, including 7 of the last 10 have been white?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Sports_Personality_of_the_Year_Award

Only Farah (black) and Hamilton & Raduceanu (mixed race) not white in the past decade - and all 6 nominees are white this year, aren't they? :dunno:

I wonder if Littler might win this year?

He's widely known among casual sports TV viewers and has a big media presence - on top of achievements and youth.

Rory has to be a contender and is a known personality beyond golf fanatics, so definitely has a chance - but golf is a minority sport for TV viewing.

2 England women footballers being nominated harms both their chances - and women's rugby is surely also a minority interest, World Cup notwithstanding?

Likewise, motor racing - granted that F1 drivers have won before, but maybe better-known, bigger personalities than Norris?

Amusing to see Scots getting angsty about McTominay not being a nominee - particularly as they might have a point (Serie A title & POTY after ManU failure; spectacular goal in WC win). lol

Looking forward to Vardy getting the 25-26 award, after he wins Serie A POTY at 39, gets a late England recall, scores the winner in the World Cup final, then celebrates by baring his arse at Trump and Infantino, before being grabbed by ICE and deported to an El Salvador prison....

Come off it, Louise Hamilton won it fair and square in 2020. First woman to win the men's F1 world title is no mean feat.

That is a good list. Could go a few way. Hampton has the best back story so will do well. Also hope she wins it just to shut Mary Earps up. Hannah deserved none of the stuff Mary said in that book and it just made Earps look like a right entitled arse and not a team player. Not sure why Chloe Kelly is there for being the one who took the decisive pens. To go Roy Keane, that's her job.

Consitency wise, Littler has dominated his sport week in and out for the year. Lando had a lot of help from others and in some cases an incredible amount of luck. I have never known an F1 driver who had the ability to bottle the first 3 laps of any race like Lando.

My Prediction:

6. Ellie (mostly because of the draw of womens rugby, it won't get many votes. She was fantastic through the tournament)
5. Chloe
4. Rory

3. Lando
2. Littler
1. Hampton

Not a fan of individuals winning awards based on team achievements in football, even if they did make crucial contributions.

Recent history tells you Chloe Kelly or Hannah Hampton are probably favourites.

Should be Rory or Littler though, although Littler is up for the young award.

Agree with this particularly as there are individual sports against team sports. Might be a bit different if for example someone scored a hat trick in a World Cup Final or saved 3 penalties. Rory has actually won as an individual and part of the Ryder Cup team so should win it in my opinion. The actual tv event is rather overblown these days

Agree with this- hence purposefully leaving out his RC achievements this year.

He’s won a number of individual comps on top of Augusta this year. It’s been a phenomenal year for him.

I’d like to see Luke Donald win something for the Bethpage win

TBF cannot really complain that Keely Hodgkinson won last year or an England lioness won in 2022 but yes Mary Earps was a runner up for England in 2023.

Mind you that used to be a common theme for the winner in the 90s!

Woke lol it's a public vote - if people are that bothered get on the anti-woke socials run a campaign for your favourite white man to win it?

It's a popularity contest and we all know it, like the ridiculous time when Giggs won it for being old and still playing football, the Man Utd fans voted in their droves to ensure he won.

I really don't gaf who wins SPOTY, it really is quite meaningless for me, but makes for easy TV fodder for the BBC and gives the public a chance to get involved, and then creates great debate as to who should've won/been nominated etc.

I've heard a few shouts that McTominay not being nominated (when he was up for the Balon d'Or, has taken Italy by storm and scored THAT goal to help his team qualify for the first time in a generstion) means that the game is bent.

Would an Englishman  have been nominated for doing all that?  I think so....

(err, well, this is embarrassing, you know what I mean, slopes off   )

:P

"The BBC won't give an award to an Irish Catholic because he's not a minority" is a take dripping in historical irony

It’s Rory or Littler for me.

The first non US to complete the grand slam of golfing majors, amongst winning decent tour events as well as playing a massive part in the Ryder Cup. Wouldn’t even be against Littler winning it. A teenager that is world champion, winning multiple events along the way.

I honestly think Chloe Kelly will win it. Don’t get me wrong she’s been brilliant for the Lionesses but the others achievements over the year surpass that for me. If any of the women win it you’ll know a lot of people will be saying it’s just for box ticking.

It used to be such a good event.
