It took years and years to craft with endless rondos every day that would make a regular footballer mind spin. Add to that a group of players that were miles better than anyone else on the planet that were able to adapt and execute with precision. Also add a very very high level of fitness and mental focus to avoid making mistakes which would be catastrophic playing this style. Now here we are with Russel Martin. Ideally for him to succeed he would have to take a season OFF with these players so they learn, get familiar and become perfect at playing this way. They need to raise their focus levels, their accuracy in passing and fitness levels for constant movement and winning the ball back quickly. Trying to learn on the job does not work. We are getting spanked and will continue to. I don’t know what the answer is. I hope Martin knows and figures it out quickly. For now maybe best to play some sort of hybrid style that’s effective in making us defensively solid and attacking wise effective. We can’t slip away in this league we really can’t. It’s clear from his interviews with Gary Lineker and others that he doesn’t even understand the tactics he’s wedded to, and he has a major problem conflating correlation with causation. 8 2

I've no problem with so called possession based football but at the end of the day goals win matches. It really is a simple game made difficult by managers who over think things with their "wonderful" ideas.
filbertway Posted 7 September Posted 7 September Id be more annoyed if they got rid at this point. They've wanted this guy for ages, spent the summer signing his mates that dont suit his style of football. Spent a good 6 or 7m on players. None of what we've seen can be a surprise. Gotta stick it out now and back him...and if it ends up in further humiliation for Top and Rudkin, then happy accident. The only thing is, McCarron clearly sees a career for himself in the game and I expect he fancies he can have a career at a high level. So I could see him throwing out an ultimatum if things dont pick up soon. As he won't want those dossers tarnishing his name. Picture the scene, we finish 12th after a strong end to the campaign with 7 wins from 7. Rudders back at the wheel and Martin gets another 2 years added to his contract as the run in just shows the project is heading in the right direction. Heaven! 1

ClaphamFox Posted 7 September Posted 7 September In this clip Souttar basically admits the players weren’t really trying on Saturday. Which raises the question: if you’re not arsed to try five games into a season, with the opportunity to get a second straight win and climb up the table, with the crowd behind you and a genuine feeling of optimism finally returning, then when will you be? https://x.com/BBCRLSport/status/2096916180757881141/video/1 1

A little short sighted no? Do you want the club sold? Or potentially going bust in league one with massive overheads

Pliskin Posted 7 September Posted 7 September Sack Martin and Rudkin, Hire Fuchs and bring in Nige to sit upstairs! 3
Stopharage Posted 7 September Posted 7 September I have some sympathy for Martin. He’s had to deal with a ridiculous amount of player upheaval - both incoming and outgoing. He’s at a club where the atmosphere was pretty rotten and the relationship between fans and those running it is at an all-time low. I also doubt he was given real insight into how much funds were available and was dependant on outgoings before he could bring players in - as a result he went for players he knew. He clearly has one approach to playing and it’s utterly remiss of the board and grossly negligent of them to have failed to foresee what would happen. This start was so predictable. You can’t play out from the back when your keeper is diabolical at passing and the CBs often treat the ball as if it has Ebola. For Martin to put the pressure of that style on a group of young players is negligent too - you are expecting to be caught out occasionally but with the hope that more positives than negatives come out of it. But individual mistakes can really hamper a young player’s confidence and development. He’s got to show that he can tactically adapt throughout the game. It’s clear so far that he’s made some poor substitutions and I can’t say I trust him to avoid criticising the players. If, and it’s a mighty if, he can show humility here there’s a chance of improvement. I don’t think he should go though. Yet. I’d give him another 5 games. We don’t really know how the international break might affect us but it might actually do us a favour if BDCR bogs off. We’re 3 points off the play-offs, which shows you how poor this league is. We need to start playing a settled team, which should be easier now the window has closed. However, this continued scattergun approach just won’t do. 1

Either way, if they sack him now that reflects badly on the board, and proves it was the wrong call. They also can’t back him that heavily and bin him one game after the window closed. If they sack him in 5/6 games, that’s Martin having failed with a squad provided for him. It's the squad he wanted, he thanked the board for getting the players her wanted 🤔🫣🤪 But it's the style we wanted to play, Top must have been very moist watching us out pass Oxford 👏👏👏

When all feel good factor is damaged then we get even worse. I do not advocate for Martin to be given much time, as we simply don't have any. This season we must go up and/or be sold otherwise we are done for. But the small sprinklings of new enthusiasm got quickly flattened out in the last two seasons and we acted too late. Some may argue we acted too soon givem both ended in appalling relegations but this current manager will not buy the love of his players as he'll be too busy trying to save his own skin and this will get toxic. 100 per cent @Ric Flair act now Leicester or repent at leisure as the saying goes

I feel sorry for him in the respect he’s essentially being hung out to dry, and this is only likely to be his last job in football, unless he goes abroad. I completely disagree with giving him time though, I genuinely didn’t think he actually has a clue how to deploy his “tactics” he has been crap everywhere, bar Southampton, and that is probably a bit of a failure too, given the squad of players he had at his disposal…. I’ve heard a large amount of excuses for him, but essentially he’s just not a good football coach. If he was you would expect to see evidence of his methods, we’re not, we don’t know how to beat the first press from defence, and that’s alarming considering he’s supposed to be a possession based coach, and you can tell it’s a coaching problem because of complete lack of movement off the ball….. we should have been 0-3 down to Plymouth, but got away with it….. He was the wrong appointment, and it will only get worse the longer he stays. We can’t afford to not get promoted, the existence of the club depends on it, so we can’t afford to be dragged into a relegation battle and miss out on promotion because we’ve delayed sacking Martin early and have lost significant ground from the off…. Get rid of him now whilst we can still potentially salvage the situation, don’t hand on until it’s too late. 1

Disastrous appointment, and we all knew it would be. I've got absolutely no sympathy for him. Any manager who thinks his principles are so important that he won't budge on them is an idiot, quite frankly. He's also earned something like £12m for 3 wins in more than two years. I don't feel sorry for him at all. I genuinely think he was literally the worst appointment possible this summer. 6
