He may well lose the next 5 games and get the sack then; and I can't say I'd be surprised if that was the case; but I just don't think getting rid of a manager after 5 league games is a decent enough crack of the whip. Loads on here disagree and that's fair enough. By the same logic, this place would have been calling for O'Neill's head when he failed to win any of his first 9 games in charge and only 3 of his first 16. And look how his tenure turned out. I thought you were talking about Gary O'Neill for a second then it dawned on me that yes you had actually used the example of MON as an implicit defence of our current manager's poor start.

The O'Neill comparison does not stack up although many wanted him gone too. Russell Martin is not an up and coming manager on the way up.from the lower leagues like O'Neill was. He is not someone that has done well at his previous club and not someone you can afford to indulge or back with time. Martin has a CV, a body of work that is simply appalling. His tenure here is unfolding just as many of us feared. It is wholly predictable because his methods have been proven not to work and giving him more time will only cause more damage. If I were him, I'd pack it in and see if I could get my old job back on DIY SOS. Edited 7 September by murphy 7
TeamRocket Posted 7 September Posted 7 September Honestly believe anyone with an FA coaching badge could do better then him. Even if it a in game FM26 one 2

I’m not defending Martin, I just think football has moved on from when the likes of Ferguson and O’Neill were given time rather than facing the sack after poor starts. It really isn’t that difficult to comprehend. Pointing out that the patience the board showed towards O’ Neill wouldn’t be afforded In modern football isn’t a defence of Martin. I’ve made my criticisms of Martin pretty clearly.

If Martin was coming in trying to massively change direction of the club and overhaul the whole system we played then I'd agree five games was too few. But he's playing the same shit every previous coach has, there's fairly consistent continuity, it's not like they're being asked to do anything unfamiliar and several of the new signings have played for him before. He ultimately shouldn't have been hired in the first place, he's not a good coach, he's won about 2 games in 2 years. Why you'd ever hire someone with that kind of losing record when the club itself has a similar losing record I don't know. The vast majority of the fanbase want a change in footballing direction anyway, attitudes towards control football were already toxic and now it's just getting worse. It was a woeful decision, it's still a woeful decision. Sunk cost fallacy costs clubs all the time. Just rip the band aid off and go get a proper ****ing manager who will get the players on board, instill some confidence, fitness and work ethic in them and start getting back to the things that made the club a historic success. Martin is a wanky show pony at a time when we wanted a Nigel Pearson, a Thomas Frank or a Daniel Farke. For the record, I'm not suggesting those individuals specifically. Just a leader that instills the sort of attitude they do. Edited 8 September by Finnegan 12 2

Can we please stop these lazy comparisons to past managers who’s had ropey starts…. The context is completely different, and the difference was we were just one or two performances away from turning it around…. You could see what Martin was trying to do, it was just a case of getting that first result and building confidence. Russell is nowhere near that, he is already done, in fact he was done before he started, he’s started throwing the youth players under the bus already, and it’s game 4….. he’s desperate and he’s fighting for his life. The difference here is, it’s abundantly clear his methods aren’t working, no matter how long he is given, he will not turn this around….. the players don’t know what they’re doing, they’re disorganised, unfit, lack any kind of cohesion and are being asked to do something that doesn’t suit their profile. We need to remember as well MON wasn’t a coach, he was a manager, he managed the group of players whilst the coaches oversaw the tactical side of the game….. Russell is allegedly a coach, the problems we’re seeing with this team are a result of his methods, and he won’t change them. It isn’t working, and eventually he will be sacked. So why waste another 5 games, which will place us so far away from automatic promotion that the whole thing will need up being a disaster. This football club has to get promoted to survive…. That’s what’s at stake here, not just a few years in the pits of the EFL, failure to “promote” will likely send the club into administration and out of business….. that’s how serious this situation is, and we can’t afford to have space cadets like Martin speeding that process up. He was the wrong choice from the off….. 5

Swansea won one of their first seven under him before winning six of their next eight. MK Dons were second from bottom after eight games in 2020 but ended up mid-table. It seems to be a pattern.

Even if they sack Martin soon (which seems unlikely), there's no evidence that it will be followed by an alternative wider strategy of how we want to play.
TheGoldenGod Posted 8 September Posted 8 September (edited) I said after the Burton result that there was zero reason to persist with him outside of the "we can't afford to sack him" narrative which is a fine rebuttal in truth. It doesn't change the fact however, that we aren't winning the next few games and by that point, promotion which (you'd assume by winning the league) was a must complete objective...will be out of reach. Automatic promotion and we are 6 points adrift as things stand which is piss poor.
