You can't go around selling babies so you can  attend football matches, no matter how lucrative it might be

The crowds are alien to me - a bit cultural difference to football as we know it.

Even more so now the knockout stages have kicked in. Middle class/non-football fans singing along to hydration break karaoke. Appears the majority of long term followers concentrated on the group stages due to the ease of travel. The atmospheres at Canada/South Africa and Germany/Paraguay at times completely void. Even the South Americans appeared to be followed by second/third generation Americans - you can't hear any of the singing you normally associate. Colombia look the only loco's and Mexico playing in Mexico but a lot of journalists on the ground saying great outside the ground but not so good in the ground. Canada have benefitted from having two stadiums which host football first - Seattle has a decent vibe because of it too. The New Jersey Stadium looks terrible - you can't see the sideline because of the stairwell and the dugouts - because the NFL playing area is bearable compatible; they had to extend the playing areas by at least 1.5 metres and it takes them right up to the perimeter. The type of thing in the Champions League which leads to the first six rows of your seats being taken out of use. Symptom of the pricing and a country what delights in events rather than actual activity at the centre of it.

Glad we back on three a day as six games a day was meaning 48 minutes of highlights every morning!

Complaining about the amount of time they had to spend dealing with the Iranian team over everyone else. Doesn't mention that was all imposed by themselves, not the Iranians. Dickhead.

Coward, too.

Folks remember how he hid like a frightened mouse in the Capitol from a coup attempt he helped incite five years ago.

One thing of interest, should Norway beat the Ivory Coast tonight, they are the ONLY country with a winning record (including a world cup finals match) against Brazil.  In fact after 4 games they have NEVER been beaten by Brazil.

Who do the winners of that L32 match tonight play on Sunday at 9pm in New York???

It's a shame they never got to play the USA which was possible.

Would have been Ro32 if they both came second. Only really possible if turkey turned up though.

Just watching the re-run of the 1994 final on ITV.

It was known for being a terrible final back then and all three commentators are slaughtering it for being a dull game after half an hour.

But the tempo is much faster than the average game now. Nobody’s putting their foot on it, they’re driving into space, there’s been a couple of chances.

Just goes to show how the standards for entertainment have slipped where a famously all-time stinker (in which two star players were playing injured) is a better watch than most matches in 2026.

Messi probably doesn't even know what Walkers is. Walkers is a branch of Lays, Lays is a trunk of PepsiCo.

Both teams were absolutely shattered from the heat and travel demands. Baresi had actually missed alot of football in the run up to that final after a knee operation, yet he looked like one of the best players on the pitch. They said it was better to play injured in that final than it was to be tired.

The emergence of France as the European powerhouse is interesting. Feel like even when I started watching in the 90s it was more of a rugby than a soccer country and behind Germany, Italy, Holland and maybe even Spain and England in terms of football success. Immigration has obviously played a part in that change.

France 98 was a watershed moment in European football, not just in France. As a continent it has broadly taken over dominance from South America since.

Yes France are now the team to beat but in 98 Brazil had a complete off day in that final largely in part to drama surrounding Ronaldo's fitness and reallly should have won the whole thing

I still dont get it why everyone is piping up about Maradona... he was a cheating get.... simple as........ he cheated and got away with it and people glorify it by calling it "the hand of god"

And then dont forget his criminal anctics when he retired.  Bloke was a fat bloated criminal cheat, nothing more, nothing less.  I still dont get it when everyone creams themselves over him.

Thats an opinion.

A flawed person for sure, but his football was unbelievable in an age where he was hardly protected like they are today. He spured Argentina to a World Cup and then he spured Napoli to win the Scudetto, when Seria A was the ultimate league in the world. He was magic.

I totally understand the frustration and annoyance of that hand ball goal, but for the rest of us unbiased it just adds to the myth.
