Is he though? We played 4 competitive games before the one that Jakub got injured, McCarthy started 2 of them. Both were league games were as Stolarczyk started in the cup ones. 

 

There is absolutely nothing to suggest that he wasn't being looked at as our no.1.

McCarthy is a decent stopper, crap with his feet but he's in his 30s. Pulls off a worldie today under the bar but possibly two of theirs are his fault. 30+ reserve keeper behind a Russell Martin defence.

Jakub is better. But it’s small margins. Those small margins can save games though.

He clearly didn't expect Norwood to have a go and his movement suggests he's expecting a ball in to the box not a shot. But, it's not far enough out to be that sure he's not gonna have a shot and it's also one of the better takers of set pieces in the league, so his positioning and movement can't be excused

He’s one of the worst keepers we’ve had. He definitely as bad as Ward….. he has to be dropped, he causing major problems defensively……

 

Problem is we’ve got Jay from the inbetweeners about manager….

As sh1t as he is, and he has Ward level moments, he seems to be able to drag important saves out of his arse at times.

I mean for balance, we lose that game comfortably without some really good saves, same with Plymouth …. Free kick positioning was shite though.

Even worse than I thought on the highlight as I didn't notice the step to his left. Genuinely don't understand what went through his brain at that point. The gap was already massive so why an earth would you start moving the other way. He's absolutely miles away from it in the end with such a feeble dive

Na we don't. If he hasn't gifted them they goal, it's extremely unlikely they get back into the game. Completely gifted them the momentum. Did really well to get that second attempt off the line but what other saves did he actually make? That pretty straightforward one from the header in the second half is all I can remember. Don't blame him for their 3rd but he also didn't react at all to that

The one off the line was really good and the tip over the bar was good. Also saved us v Plymouth. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t particularly like him and think we need another keeper but there is some wild overreactions on here. Comparing him to ward is ridiculous.

Weird signing. He seems to pull off some good instinctive saves (against Plymouth too) but at the cost of a few massive mistakes each match and is obviously uncomfortable using his feet the way RM dictates he must. Makes the whole 'he had Premier League offers' story quite difficult to believe.

Even worse than his shot stopping ability is his complete inability to play possession football.

 

Playing out the back with McCarthy in goal is either a death wish or just ends up getting booted long and with all our players around our penalty box we never win any second balls.

The other save was decent; had that gone in, it would have been shocking. Plymouth he has a great game.

 

But i don't even classify that few kick goal as a mistake. The step to his left was an error but his set up was beyond embarrassing. Even if there's no wall there, it should take a near perfect strike to score from there, and it wasn't anything close to that. Probably the worst goal direct from a free kick I've ever seen (that didn't have a deflection or was taken quickly with the GK out of position). I know we can all be hyperbolic and say 'I would have scored that' when somebody misses a sitter but obviously you'd need to be up with play, have the composure under pressure etc, but I think majority of people would never have let that in. Might have fluffed the save but would never be set up like that so the shot wouldn't come.

 

But any comparisons to Danny Ward are silly. Don't think it was about him being a terrible keeper, instead he looked like he had the goalkeeping equivalent of the yips. Would literally move out of the way of the ball at times, so some kind of mental scarring there. You'll never see a worse keeping performance than that season.

From that distance he could have forgot the wall and invited a shot and fared better.

Russell is a clown but blaming him for this is silly. If your manager is directing the wall size/who's in that wall, you've lost the plot. 

 

All on McCarthy. Should barely need a wall from there anyway

there is a theory that you shouldn't bother with walls and just give the keeper a clear view, no one is ever brave enough to try it though
