Alex McCarthy joins on deal to 2028

He may or may not be ok as first choice goalie for the season, it mainly depends on whether he can sort out his passing ability or at least be given the freedom to go long when the situation is too high risk. But what if he doesn’t or if he gets a long term injury too?
If we have one loan space still available shouldn’t we be getting another reasonable goalkeeper in on loan. Otherwise Ravizzoli is on his own and better be better than is currently expected.

Awful for Jakub but terrible timing too. Before this, getting a 4th GK would have felt like madness. To happen a few hours before xfer deadline is outright horrible for everyone.

We will concede goals if he continues to play out from the back. He simply takes too long to pass the ball. Saves wise, brilliant.

May have to keep our fingers crossed until January then that everything will be ok. Presumably we can then use the loan space then.

Every Leicester fan at the game would tell you the same about McCarthy's performance. Shit with his feet but great with his hands. I'm also sure that that's how McCarthy would describe himself as a footballer because he's a goalkeeper and not Paul Scholes. It's about time the club recognised that.

I never said fans weren't pissed off but it still doesn't do much for the players confidence regardless. People saying he looked nervous, is this ironic posting. I was at the game myself so just posting what I feel.

I've been pretty on board with all of our signings as they all make some sense at the very least, however McCarthy is a baffling one to me. Why did we not recruit a ball playing goalkeeper for the system we intended to play? He was class last night with the saves he made, but he can't play it out from the back.

The funny thing is, we don't actually have to tear the whole style of play apart to make up for McCarthy's shortcomings with the ball at his feet. It really is a case of don't make him try and play it out when it's clearly not on. We can still go short sometimes, just don't play it to your centre back when he's marked inside his own 6-yard box.

McCarthy is a prime example of where you can distinguish a difference between those that are poor players and the managers philosophy. I refuse to believe someone of McCarthy's previous level, age and experience would play the passes and make the decisions that he did last night, it's clearly been engrained in him to play the short pass at absolute all costs. Some of the passing decisions he made last night were absolutely baffling.

 

But that being said, he bailed himself out by making some great some great stops last night. I like the whole playing out from the back thing generally/personally but when we're all splitting our goalkeeper into championship level shot stopper and a Sunday league "ball playing" keeper then you're hanging him out to dry a bit.

I can tell you for a fact that Russell Martin is not going to tell the team to stop playing out from the back. It's fundamental to how he sees the game and he's never deviated from it. He's not going to now.

 

Of course, no player has the 'right' to dictate to fans how they should be treated. However, ironically cheering a player whose confidence is low is very likely going to make him even less confident and more error-prone. There is not much benefit in mocking a player for following his manager's orders when there is zero chance of his manager changing those orders. It comes down to a simple question: Is a fan's 'right' to express his opinion more important to him than how the team performs? Everyone will have their own answer.

I don't agree with you. I just disagree with the notion that fans shouldn't express their feelings.

 

Passing it in your own area to players that are double marked under a high press is asking for trouble and paying fans are sick of it.

This is fine, so be it. But McCarthy was brought in like he was some sort of disciple of Martin and would be used to playing his style of football. Jakub looked way more suited to it based on the last couple of games. It's quite baffling why he was brought in.

I agree. It's more a protest to the board which is ultimately the bigger picture and more important than any player.

 

I agree that Martin won't stop instructing his goalkeeper to put his back 4 under needless pressure. It's just time the club realised that fans do not want to see it happen so that when we're looking at the next manager, we're not making the same conversations.

I agree that recruiting McCarthy was an odd move given his obvious deficiency in an area that Martin values so highly.

McCarthy was just brought in because he's an experienced pro and we were probably well aware that Vietes was gonna be jettisoned.  And the price was right.

Still a very good shot stopper but absolutely poop with his feet - such a bizarre Martin signing considering what he is being asked to do - to be clear he does not want to be playing those short balls anymore than we any to see it but is being told to play like that - just have to hope he can improve a bit at it as season goes on because he is now playing 40 odd games this year

I have no problem with McCarthy if Martin is aware not to play from the back at the very least when he’s on

Fortunately after the first half of suicide football at the back yesterday, something was clearly said and changed at HT as the constant passing back to him dropped drastically in the 2nd half, hopefully because Martin realised it’s comedy value for any neutral had no place in winning a game

I want my GK to save shots, and Mcarthy is best in club at that.

Playing out from the back is an additional bonus.

2nd half was so much better, he didnt get put in precarious situations and we went long when he wasnt comfortable.

 

I agree the pass to Thomas was extremely high risk but the defenders need to learn also not to put him in tight situations.

 

He was always brought here as the number 1.

 

Far far better than Jacub IMO, he just needs a run in team to get match sharpness back.
