I think the people saying he's as bad as Ward have very short memories. We definitely need a new keeper though. Any decent free agents around?

I looked though on Transfer Markrt yesterday the only name that stood out was Etienne Green, but he's also injured until new year apparently

Weird signing. He seems to pull off some good instinctive saves (against Plymouth too) but at the cost of a few massive mistakes each match and is obviously uncomfortable using his feet the way RM dictates he must. Makes the whole 'he had Premier League offers' story quite difficult to believe.

Not really, him being 3rd choice at a prem club makes a lot of sense especially being English/homegrown. It’s far more believable than any other club watched him play, especially in the last few years and decided to bring him in as 1st choice

Russell is a clown but blaming him for this is silly. If your manager is directing the wall size/who's in that wall, you've lost the plot.

All on McCarthy. Should barely need a wall from there anyway

I disagree, Part of his job is setting up the Team in various events. Like who takes Penalty Kicks and Corners free kicks etc.

The fact that the two smallest players made up the Wall means he never discussed the issue with the players. They would have been better standing on the Goal line.

Even McCarthy should be working on it with the team calling for better support. Lundstram and Riis should have been in that wall leaving the Defenders to mark up the Stockport forwards.

Let's just hope that it's something we improve on going forward.

Set piece takers, fair enough. But to trying and micromanage what the goalkeeper does is madness. Russell Martin should never be a better judge than the goalkeeper in goal as to what is needed in that situation.

Irrelevant anyway as that goal has nothing to do with the wall. It needed to be a newer perfect strike to go in from there, with or without a wall. So the fact it was not very pacey and nowhere near the corner means McCarthy has embarrassed himself

Looking at the footage for that free kick, McCarthy set himself 100% for the cross and gave himself no chance when he was slow to pick up the shot.  Given how slow he is to get down for shots anyway, he should have made allowance for the possibility of a shot, been more alert to it and reacted to it sooner.

That was very naive positioning and judgement for a professional goalie.

Looking at the footage everyone in our team assumed he was going to take a cross. Not one single person assumed shot. Our 2 small players were in the wall because of that.

I saw McCarthy's position and said to myself - 'id take a shot if i was him'.

I think it was a level of arrogance that the Stockport player didnt have the shot in him.

He was always going to be a poor signing. He's a 36 year old goalkeeper ffs. People posting earlier in the thread about "he will be fine if..." fall for the same thing over and over again with this club. Another old player that will contribute nothing.

Yeah, I've banged on about it in this thread and elsewhere, but it's not even a normal mistake/error, it's complete negligence. Not like he was caught out with a quick free kick

He's very poor at pre empting shots

As you say he should be all over both posts from that distance and allow himself time and the ability to move his feet to take relatively comfortably

He's just shite it's as simple as that

Id be absolutely amazed if we dont sign a keeper in Jan. If hes our number one all season that could be the difference between promotion/relegation depending on how the season shapes up. He will drop us several points this season
