I heard on the TV that NY was panicking because of potential 55mph winds (plus gusts). 55mph winds is nothing. We get100kmh winds plus off the atlantic ocean several times a year.

I thought New Yorkers were made of sterner stuff.

I think they`re more concerned about the flooding, FIF. There`s a full moon tonight coupled with the storm it could make the usual high tide 6+ feet higher.

Winds increase in intensity with height, and severe storms be very dangerous in cities with lots of high-rise buildings.

Its the storm surge that is worrying everyone. Considering Manhattan is only a few feet above sea level a 6ft storm surge could put a good portion underwater. That was the problem with Katrina as New Orleans is basically below sea level.

Biggest hurricane to hit the east coast in decades. A storm which is hundreds of miles across and is going to bring 25cm of rain and 60cm of snow. Storm surge, high tides. Has already killed 60 people back when it was just a baby.

But yes fif, i bet your windy days in France are so much worse. You're so brave.

On the BBC live thing some bloke said he's just seen someone heading north on a jetski! Absolute madhead, apparently the river looks like an ocean with the waves on it.

Don't worry...the werewolves will drown in the storm surge.

Seriously though, let's hope people manage to keep themselves safe over there.

How much of it will make it to our shores?

Haha gotta love people with horses heads.

Can remember that craze, when there was a guy found on google street view dressed wearing one of them, not once but twice.

Right now on the news over here, it is saying the winds are upto 100mph, Parts of New york is under nearly 14 ft of water... other places have 4ft of snow ... all of this in one day... 5.2 million now without electricity....

:(

I'm sure the news said last night, that if it went to 15 feet it would flood lower manhatten.

gusts maybe 100mph NOT winds. The wave surge could be a serious problem but it appears that things were not as bad as people were reporting.

Just before the millenium eve we were hit with a big hurricane, 6 days without water or electricity and roads cut off for 3 or 4 days. I was also in the last big British storm. If you take the right precautions then there is a very very small chance that you will be hurt. It's the same with the wave surges - we had one three years ago here which flooded the town but you move upstairs whilst it's on or you move inland for a couple of days.

I hear that there have been 13 deaths so far, sad but no worse than a cold snap in London on the homeless.

At least 9 million people live in NY. 19million in the metro.

13 deaths throughout USA noted so far.

Chances are he's fine.

The images of streets of water are quite impressive. There are going to be a lot of insurance claims.

Maybe a blessing in disguise for whoever is the next President as the rebuild and recovery could give their economy a big boost.

It's a ****ing massive hurricane and we're British, what do we know about crazy weather? Why are you being a twat, FIF?

Not worth responding to Finners. Seems you can't even put a nice thought out these days.
