Same when they get subbed on and touch the ground then do the catholic cross thing on their body.

God really does spread himself thin when it comes to helping sportspeople.

Footballers that go down on their knees, look upto the sky,  arms in the air & fingers pointing.. and thanking the invisible one we know as god.

Apologies if that offends anyone who is relgieous.

What is it exactly that annoys you?

I'm an atheist but I couldn't care less honestly.

The annoyance for me is the falseness to it.. or at least it feels that way. And the fact that so many footballers do it.

Regarding religion i'm not sure where mine lies really. Was atheist until my dad died and even though now i dont really believe some old dude sits in the clouds and watches over us, i do like to think my dad is in a better place.

Not sure it’s quite the same feeling, feeling like god has guided you into a 9-5 where your biggest achievement of the day is curling 1 out on company time.

Tbf I've been that dehydrated with the weather that what I backed out at work yesterday, I did the point to the sky like I'd scored an added time winner.

It's the performative aspect of them doing it for everyone to see. Why can't they do it in the dressing room before they come out? Or even before they leave the house/hotel every morning? Do they really need a specific show of their faith for a very specific circumstance?

(I'm as atheist as they come too.)

It's not false, it's just you struggle to understand people believing in something you are unsure about.

"Performative" once again. People around the world are different and believe in different things, as much as that blows people's minds in the UK.

I'll respect your opinion based on purely what you think and respectfully disagree

Fair enough, was being a bit needlessly confrontational, probably the heat

People are allowed to believe whatever they want. I've no problem with that. On the flipside of the same coin however, I'm also allowed to question them on it for their belief and motivations.

Religion is ultimately false and performative and looks to influence and indoctrinate children and adults through fear. Spirituality however is a deeply personal thing which doesn't need other people to validate.

Belief cannot be "performative". If it is then that word really has no meaning anymore, which to be honest is the case.

And it's impossible really to distinguish between 'religion' and 'spirituality'. You can definitely distinguish between religious organizations and individual belief, players crossing themselves would certainly fall in the latter category.

‘Falsemess’ is harsh. I’ve no reason to believe these people at the pinnacle of their careers do not truly believe their god has guided them there. I respect that about truly religious people, they think everything is guided by god, good or bad. Remember being in Dubai about 10 years ago and our related investor group got hair cut to zero on a transaction. Their genuine reaction was ‘inshallah’ (god willing) and didn’t sweat it after that. Great way to live imo

In my experience a lot of Brits are quite religious while telling themselves they're not. Like, "I'm not religious but I think there's got to be something more to it all than this yeah? And like, some kind of higher power we're not aware of. And some of life just feel pre-ordained, know what I mean mate? But listen, I'm not religious, yeah? Not some God botherer innit. Just a bit spiritual".

I'd personally draw a pretty marked delineation between the personal and unique belief of a single person in a deity and the very rules-based precepts of paying homage to a deity that practically all organised religions state, but that's clearly a matter of debate.

Similar in Morocco, people stopping on random parts of the street to lay prayer mats down at all times of the day to pray. Lovely warm people with a very strong belief, I certainly didn't think that any of it was false and in some ways I envy them

Indeed, and with so many players from all over the world, cultures and religions doing it, God must support lots of different teams.

Plastic

Which god though? Humans have invented 5000 plus. But the one in the area that person is born  in or has heritage to is the only real one.

Most just blindly follow.

Yes you are right i dont think it was harsh and i didnt mean they didnt believe as im sure they do. What grinds my gears is the fact that so many do it on the 'stage of the pitch in such a dramatic fashion' ... Thats the falseness i was meaning and didnt articulate well.

Anyway its something that grinds my gears.

ITV football coverage coming back from ads to tell you, coming up next, the 2nd half and then showing more ads.

Sky etc do the exact same thing during regular football coverage, I've always hated it
