Richard Keys & Andy Gray

I dont see why sexism is any less serious than racism. He wouldnt of got away with a racist remark, so he shouldnt and hasnt got away with a sexist remark.

I have got to agree with this

As for people in this thread saying women shouldn't be allowed in 'our' game, I always thought football was the people's game

Breaking news on SSN is that Andy Gray's contract with Sky has been terminated.

I think it's a shame that Sky feel it necessary to sack him for this. I may be in the minority, but I think of Andy Gray as one of the best commentators in the game, far better than the likes of Mark Lawrenson, David Pleat, etc. He seems to provide more in-game analysis when commentating, as compared to BBC's and ITV's offerings.

At the end of the day, he's remarked in some not particularly high-class banter. Whether that qualifies as something to destroy someone's career and put them on the dole, I'm not so sure. Others clearly disagree, but I do find it odd all the hypocrisy. You have Sky Sports News (or FHM meets sports news) where sexy young female presenters are there based on their sex appeal, playing up to the old stereotypes. This is not a problem. You have jokes on Soccer AM with the soccerette. This is not a problem. You have TV shows like Loose Women where jokes are made at men's expense. This is not a problem. Then the same people who watch these shows and enjoy them, feel that Andy Gray is beyond the pale as he enjoyed the same kind of banter with a friend of his.

I also do find it a bit odd the amount of footage leaked and wonder if someone had an agenda there.

Either way, it seems like we'll never hear the immortal line "Take a bow son" any time soon.

So it's a shame that Sky did not look to weather the storm, over what is an issue that will blow over very quickly.

Can't condone anything he's said but he's really been stitched up here by someone who had it in for him.

Maybe people that don't like bigoted, chauvinistic dickheads who aren't that good at punditry?

Sian Massey isn't going to be officiating tonight as well.

Feel sorry for her, she's done nothing wrong at all in this.

Really? She should tell the FA that she wants to officiate tonight and show herself to be able to stand up to the pressure. That will do more for women in the game than anything.

I find it puzzling that some people are coming to their defence and how casual sexism is still accepted in modern society, especially in football.

Im glad Gray is gone. I thought he was bulletproof at Sky - its far too cosy and matey at Sky, it's just jobs for the boys.

A return for Jonathan Pearce then? I rate this guy highly out of all of them.

Jonathan Pierce is an absolutely terrible commentator. Slide out of Arsenal's back end and come up with a new word other than 'splendid.'

Knobber.

Leon Knight, the next big thing once upon a time. Where is he now?

Reaching the dizzy heights all the way over at Coleraine FC.

15 clubs since he started at Chelsea in 1999.

Bet he's proud of his career.

I don't see any reason why the likes of Sian Massey can't officiate a men's football match without all of this shit. It's one thing to expect a woman play football at a Premiership level, but something completely different to expect that a woman cannot perform the duties required of an official referee simply because she's a woman. What, women can't see better than men? They can't run 60 yards up and down? They can't comprehend the law about offside?

Men are involved in women's football to a much higher degree--as coaches, as officials, etc. so it's a silly double standard to say that women shouldn't officiate in the men's game.

Jesus Christ you're a dinosaur.

If anybody, regardless of their sex, wants to knowingly put themselves in that situation who the fuck are you to say they can't? We're not rounding poor, defenceless women up off the street and forcing them to be referees. They want to do it and anyone who knows football (and believe it or not, Mack, some women do know about football - crazy, right!?) knows referees are going to get some stick.

As for it's not fair on the players because they have to treat her like a woman!? Are you kidding me!? Players shouldn't be shouting at referees, crowding referees, intimidating referees. It isn't some sort of traditional part of the sport that we all love, something that adds a bit of banter. It's just ridiculous and slows the game down.

Rugby's far more volatile than football. You get far more stamps, sly punches and scraps per game than you do in football - all because it's a lot more emotionally charged, which makes sense given the level of physical contact. But how often does that spill over in to squaring up to a ref? Never. Ever.

Football just needs to breed a culture of growing the fuck up and leaving the officials be after the whistle's gone, regardless of the cup size of the ref.

This, this, this... I'm sorry, but now I'm going to go on a somewhat off-topic rant. I say it all of the time, but the endemic petulance of football players is easily the thing I hate most about the sport. It seems like there are at least one player that argues with the ref after every call--and heaven forbid a referee has the gall to call for a penalty. Dissent IS a cautionable offense. Violent conduct--which includes profane language--IS a ground for sending off a player. Players would never get away with that in any other sport:

American football: 15-yard personal foul (and an automatic first down for the offense if a defensive player is penalized)

Baseball: A likely ejection from the game--a certain ejection from the game if a player or manager argues a called ball or strike (that's actually in the rule book)

Basketball: Technical foul, and a free throw for the other team. Two technical fouls = an automatic ejection (although a referee has the authority to eject a player on his first technical). IIRC MVP candidates Amar'e Stoudemire and Dwight Howard are leading the league in getting T'ed up because they can't keep their fvcking mouths shut (don't ask me how Wayne Rooney only has two Premier League bookings this year).

Cricket: There's a whole Code of Conduct about all of this because "that's just not cricket."

Ice hockey: Two-minute minor and/or 10-minute misconduct penalty

Rugby (both union and legaue, I think): similar laws to football, but the yellow card also equals 10 minutes in the sin bin

Tennis: a series of penalties: warning, point penalty, game penalty, default (in some places, no warning but right to a point penalty for first offense)

If referees stuck to the letter of the law--like their peers in other sports--they'd be giving out yellow cards and red cards like toys on Christmas.

You know what? Actually, if players didn't give female refs shit because they'd be embarrassed to talk to a woman the way they talk to male refs, sexist as it can be that would be a godsend to football. To come to think of it, if this would be the case, then I'd want every referee in professional men's football to be female.

Just a correction on the rugby front, Jordan, players in rugby don't tend to get carded for talking to the referee unless they're doing it persistently and aggressively. It's a ten yard penalty if you're not the captain and you're backchatting the ref.

Gray and the rest were wrong, but I think a dismissal is fooking ridiculous. An internal disciplinary and maybe a suspension would have sufficed.

At the end of the day we were listening to a private chat between friends... who's private chats with their friends would stand up to a witch-hunt and public scrutiny like that?

Pretty sure it only saw the light of day thanks to his action against News International over his phone hacking, this theory is further backed up by the fact SkyNews seem determined to carry out a character assassination on him along with most of the dirty work being carried out by The Telegraph, Times & The Sun.

SkySports will probably have a woman in the studio now just to prove they're not sexist and if she's as useless as the woman on The Football League Show.... I give up frusty.gif

Oh, wait here comes the Thought Police

He was a cock, deserved to go. Always liked him as a co-commentator/analysist personally, but obviously a vile character. Hate Sky but fair play to them.
