MGLCFC Posted 26 August 2011 Posted 26 August 2011 Thanks for the info - just shows Wiki unreliable as it says his height is 1.82m - which is around 6 foot.
@mrtonycox Posted 26 August 2011 Posted 26 August 2011 I have a mate that's an Everton fan, they all hate him and his laziness... It all depends what mood he's in.. He was good for us at times last season but also show'd lazziness. I'm mixed if we get him, if he's mind is with it he'll be a good purchase.
21st Century Fox Posted 26 August 2011 Posted 26 August 2011 Anyone who supports a Championship side and can say they'd be disappointed to get Yakubu, needs a reality check. Fair enough feeling mildly disappointed in comparison with Maynard but getting Yakubu in any circumstance is above and beyond what most other clubs in this league can even dream of.

Exactly, he scored 11 in 20 for us last season and proved he can be a lazy player yet still bang in plenty of goals. I coudn't care less if he stands on the same spot for 89 minutes of each game if he scores at a ratio like he did last season. Well worth getting in. At the same ratio as last season, with 42 games left he'd get us 23 in the league alone.

cc_star Posted 26 August 2011 Posted 26 August 2011 Last season we created many times more chances than we have created so far this season, the foitball was faster & flowed better with some quick one touch stuff which sliced through teams, but this time around with Mills a bit of a hoofer & Konchesky booting high floated balls from halfway line & Naughton missing from the right I just don't think we'd create the chances Yak needs, whereas Maynard creates his own. I'd be delighted to get Yak, but a bit more delighted to get Maynard especially as we're looking a different side to last season's which every game put 5 to 10 golden chances in the Yak's lap for him to average just over 1 in 2
Kitchandro Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Exactly, he scored 11 in 20 for us last season and proved he can be a lazy player yet still bang in plenty of goals. At the same ratio as last season, with 42 games left he'd get us 23 in the league alone. So he scores a goal in minute 1 of the game, stands around for the next 89 and we effectively play with 10 and lose 2-1. Say this happens in about half our games. Or say he gets the winner in 23 games. But in the other 23, he stands around for the whole match and we effectively play with 10 for those games, and we lose those 23. In neither scenario do we get promoted. Of course reality isn't as straightforward as that but I'm trying to simplify it to make people understand that scoring 1 in 2 doesn't guarantee you wins or promotion, it's not good enough to say 'I don't care if he does nothing but score', because goals are not the goal, they are a means to an end. He is not paid just to put the ball in the back of the net, he is paid to help his team win football matches. I'm not saying I definitely wouldn't want him, I'd prefer a couple of others we've been linked to, but he's not awful obviously. I just think this argument of 'he's scored 11 in 20 so he'd probably get 1 in 2 this season and we'd get promotion' doesn't really tell the whole story and is too simplified. May I add that it's not like Nugent and Vassell have been missing a load of sitters so far; with the lack of service, there's no guarantee, in fact it's less likely that Yakubu would end up with a ratio of 1 in 2. We are not really missing a striker to put the ball in the back of the net, we are missing a striker with movement, pace, and the ability to assist the team in making chances for himself and others. Again, not saying Yakubu is a terrible option, just that goal ratios over half a season and from years ago aren't the be all and end all to the argument.

The fact he's there, even if doing nothing, would take at least one, possibly two defenders away (which nobody currently does). This would leave more space for other players, leading to a larger amount of chances, and opening the game up for players like andy king and paul gallagher (and johnson when he starts playing) to take advantage of.
foxes2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 the problem must be the wages because everton would surely loan him to us if he cant get in there squad
MrAus Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Did anyone else hear the commentary on the game???? Young said the striker wasnt in the squad today, too which stringer replied something about Maynard!!! Yakubu wasnt in Evertons squad.... Is it just me who thinks were bringing the Yak back???
Jobyfox Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 I want the Yak back!!! For me we really need another option up front. Someone who can hold the ball up and bring others into play - especially if Sven is going to keep playing 4-5-1. Against Southampton the Yak would have been an outlet ball, rather than lumping it up to Vassell who's about 2' 3". I don't really care if he hardly moves all match as his presence will take people away from others, particularly in set plays. Make it happen :sge:
Thracian Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Seems to me like we need em both or two others just as good.
Raw Dykes Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Seems to me like we need em both or two others just as good. Yup. We're so thin on the ground up front, there must be a new striker or two coming in soon. Waghorn, Howard, Kermorgant all transfer-listed, Nugent injured, Crncic doesn't actually exist - that just leaves Vassell, an 18 year old Schlupp, and Gallagher, who isn't really an out-and-out striker. I'd be happy with one of Maynard, Yakubu or someone as good, and someone else as backup, but we're so short of forward options and it needs addressing urgently.
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Hope we get maynard then yak on loan not a bad idea, although i dont think we will get both?

Yak wasn't in last week's Everton squad either, nor the last friendly in replace of the cancelled Spurs game --------------------------------- Does this team make enough chances for it to be worth our while carrying a player? Last season we did, this season I'm not so sure.... yet, anyway
Wymsey Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Hope we get maynard then yak on loan Preferably for Everton, as they're in financial difficulty and apparently they need to sell before they can buy, I don't think they would allow us to have him just on loan. If we bid eg. £6m for him, then maybe they would accept it as this gives them the money to fund for his replacement. So no, it probably wouldn't work getting him via loan.
Libertine Dream Posted 27 August 2011 Posted 27 August 2011 Yak wasn't in last week's Everton squad either, nor the last friendly in replace of the cancelled Spurs game --------------------------------- Does this team make enough chances for it to be worth our while carrying a player? Last season we did, this season I'm not so sure.... yet, anyway I personally think to create those chances we need a wide man and a striker, of which sven has admitted we're trying to sign one of each. I expect we'll sign Maynard before Wednesday and then the Yak will come in on loan around October time with an option to buy. I think by this time everything will click and 433 will be working perfectly and Maynard could be a perfect player to maybe play just off the Yak. My team would then be Kasper Pantsil--Mills--Bamba--Konch ---------Fernandes--Wellens--------------- Danns-----------------------------New Winger/Gradel if he was to sign -----------Maynard if he was to sign------ ------------------------------Yakubu/Nugent---- Thats my personal opinion but with some of the quality in the squad, it's hard to leave out players.
