I'm with Phube on this, was raging when I finally caught up with last Monday's show, just a completely unnecessary deviation from the book and I can't understand why, when there is so much great plot to fit in, why fvck about adding new stuff whilst cutting out key scenes from the book.

The cynic in me suggests they did it deliberately to stir up extra debate and controversy, fvcking networks, admittedly in the book Bran's story isn't very interesting at this point, but they could have spiced it up in other ways, no problem with them meeting some of the traitors at Craster's or white walkers, or wildlings, to make their journey more televisual but Jon shouldn't know that Bran is alive.

Hope Phube and CPF enjoy this episode. Kind of makes the point for why they are doing what they are doing. Good summation of my feelings about it below (taken from reddit).

So tonight resolved the Craster's Keep/Bran storyline beautifully. This is the perfect thing to do to Bran's story, and here's why:

Bran's story in the books is straightforward: go find the 3-eyed raven. His chapters are slow, if interesting, and generally do more for world-building than actual plot developments or character arcs. And the show is filling that gap perfectly.

1) Bran wargs into Hodor and goes APESHIT on Locke. This is a perfect example of the darker, more vengeful side of Bran coming out in defense of Meera - and of himself, of course - but most importantly, how he is starting to use Hodor more and more as a tool.

2) Choosing to leave Jon. This is huge. At the windmill, he didn't have much of a choice. Jon was outnumbered and outgunned, and had to flee alone. Obviously Bran isn't going out there. But Bran is at last presented with a choice. And he makes it, for better or for worse. And that's HUGE character development! It shows that Bran is focused on getting to the 3-eyed raven more than he wants to see his family again.

tl;dr The show's changes to Bran's story are perfect and smart, given the demands of the medium.

Deviation from the books is the most stupid thing to get annoyed about, ever. It's great TV, enjoy it for what it is and stop whinging, it'll be HBO who end up finishing the whole saga rather than Martin anyway.

Indeed, although you've insinuated tyrion isn't executed for Joffreys murder by suggesting there is still time for him to make freinds with another little dwarf next series, so if twats like you could keep your mouth shut and stop giving things away whilst moaning about the program staying faithful to a series of books that will never be concluded by the original author I'd be grateful.

If only you'd put this in spoilers!!!

I agree, I would understand if it was bad but even if there's any big changes (which there haven't been really) it's still an adaptation which they need to fit on screen. I'm not doing this argument again so I won't even go any further :P

Also, there's reasons for the deviation in my spoiler

That's all well and good except for one thing, which is Jon knows Bran, rightful heir to Winterfell and the North is alive, this has a significant impact on a decision he later has to make.

No problem with Bran coming across the traitors, and controlling Hodor to escape, developing his journey is understandable, but that could have been done without Jon and the watch getting involved, and the excuse for going after the traitors, is that they might tell Mance how many men they really have is laughable, Mance knows he massively out numbers the defenders on the wall, even if he believed Jon's lie and is going to attack regardless of whether he finds out exactly how many men they have.

And why suddenly create 2 superflous characters, just to kill them off instantly when there are others more relevant to the overall plot they could be focussing on, such as Mance, Rattleshirt and Tormund Giantsbane.

putting stuff in spoilers is pointless, as im discovering i cant not click them.

To the first bit, I don't think it is laughable. Didn't Jon tell Mance there were 1000 men on the show? That would give them more time to prepare and spread Mance's forces a bit so tactically it seems pretty important.

The second bit I am with you on. I thought Karl was pretty good but it seemed he was going to die regardless. Vargo Hoat/Locke/whoever was a weird one though, seemed like they were developing him for some sort of role in Jon's story, maybe the elections etc.

I guess we'll see what happens with your point in relation to Bran and I'll agree with you for now that it does seem a weird choice.

I do like that he sees Jon and has to move on though

I don't really think it's something to get in a tiz about though while we don't know where they are going with it. 3.5 seasons so far have been brilliant so I have faith in them.

Like Manwell has said though the series is going in it's own direction. It will overtake the book unless something nuts happens (Like TWOW is released yesterday) so you'll have to get used to differences that may only become apparent why they were made when something happens on the show in a couple of seasons time.

I just dont know what the bloody hell is going on. I was tempted to reread the book thinking I had somehow missed all of that.

Very strange. I wonder what else will be different. Do not fiddle with Tyrion's story you stupid producers.

They will though. A lot of the time he's just travelling or he's imprisoned or he meets characters that aren't worth showing on tv so it will change imo. Will be interesting to see if Penny is included.

I'm not really in a tiz, and I wasn't really raging, I just don't really understand why they would put in such a change when they leave out or skip through so many great bits from the book. I really don't think Dany's story is working in the TV show at the moment, it is just a bit flat, as you are not really getting her inner turmoil over her love interests and her destiny, betrayals and trust issues and how she is handling her dragons, which have barely got a mention in this series so far.

*Cough* SPOILER ALERT!!!!

In the books he's ~8 and she's ~16. On the show I think he's probably ~13 and she's ~20?

Natalie Dormer. She is also in The Tudors as Anne Boleyn and gets her paps out a few times in that as well. She's like 31 in real life.

Try to avoid this thread because everybody drops casual spoilers, but I must say that ending scene was absolutely superb. one of my favourites out of all of the seasons

One of two superb performances in that episode

It was so good it made me forget that awful scene with the ironborn and ramsay's lads.

Surely the followup scene was one of the most wicked and evil scenes yet though. I used to dislike Alfie Allen, but it's all coming together now.

Was getting really bored of the kings landing happenings until this episode. Actually the only storyline that isn't slightly boring me at the minute is the nights watch stuff which was missing this week.

Dinklage is superb, I also like Oberyn.. still pretty confused what counts as a spoiler in this thread? Are we okay to talk in depth about the most recent episode or...?
