Phube Posted 29 March 2012 Posted 29 March 2012 People never believe politicians... ... until they give them license to do something stupid. Sadly this is so true! I'll only panic when they tell us not to.
Daggers Posted 29 March 2012 Posted 29 March 2012 I'm going to panic buy some curry and a lot of lager.
Reynard Bleu Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 Out of a situation of some concern (tanker drivers ballot = willing to strike at some point), where no strike is scheduled, where talks are planned for a few days hence, and where any strike requires a 7 notice period, the utter twats in the Government have created public panic, a petrol shortage and a raft of profiteering by retailers. Still we are all in it together so that's OK.
cambridgefox Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 Im on the road so do a fair few miles, yesterday i was running on vapours so needed to fill up .mid afternoon 2 garages sold out of diesel and lines of cars about 50 strong, one thing i did notice though was the majority seemed to be pensioners. Now im not saying they dont need a car,but filling up with £60 of fuel will most probably last them a month,My mum phoned and said my grandad had got all het up about it and filled up.He is 90 and does about 20 miles a week(20 miles too many)i rest my case, anyway i put £100 in mine,so i have a weeks worth.
JadeFalcon Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 the most annoying thing about this panic buying is... by the time an actual strike will hit (if it hits at all).... they will have used up the petrol in their tanks anyways.. negating the need for the panic buying in the first place dosey twats... but its the same thing yet again 90% of the population of this country dont know what to do unless they are told to, they cant make up their minds by themselves.
Bayfox Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 What I find interesting is that these people panic buying and topping up the tank everyday with a few quid here and there have now helped develop a situation where instead of potentially having 1 week with no fuel, we now have a situation where we may have no fuel for 2 or 3 weeks should the strike happen and really if you are using 10/15 pounds of fuel a day how long is your 1 tank actually going to last you when it boils down to it. I had to queue yesterday as I was down to the last gallon or so and am away next week so wanted to make sure I have some when I get back, but if this carries on there's potential for my business to grind to a halt as we carry out work nationwide, thanks to the government, I hope they are putting some of the fuel duty to one side for when companies have to stop working.
Guest Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 Isn't there a fuel protest coming up soon? One of these "don't buy fuel on such and such a day, that'll learn them greedy bastards" protests? How better to avoid it than to take a pre-emptive 'strike', eh? There's one for the conspiracy theorists out there
l444ry Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 The strange this is that nobody seems to admit being a panic buyer. All the TV progs, radio shows, forums and pubs are full of people slating these half-wits.
steveherbe Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 Guildford today. Shell tanker pulled out of local filling station at 07:55 having made a delivery. Garage CLOSED again before 0930, sold out of everything - except Pasties obviously. And as someone pointed out earlier, there's a lot of pensioners suddenly appearing in filling stations with white fivers asking for 10 bobs worth of 98 octane and a shot of Redex (if you dont understand the last bit, dont ask!)
dave the caveman Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 Breaking news on BBC says there will not be a strike Panic over!
steveherbe Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 Will pasties still be available at the weekend then?
Saxondale Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 I got three Cornish pasties for 22p each from the reduced cabinet in Tesco the other night. WHAT PASTY CRISIS?!
Rincewind Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 I'm confused. What have pasties got to do with petrol? Although I saw a tweet from Stephen Fry about it.
RobHawk Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 I went for petrol last night, After queuing for 3 mins to get petrol but 20 mins at the food checkout, I've decided the welsh don't care whether they can get out and about as long as there's plenty of food in the house!
Captain... Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 I got three Cornish pasties for 22p each from the reduced cabinet in Tesco the other night. WHAT PASTY CRISIS?! Were they hot? and did they reduce them as soon as they reached ambient temperature?
Jon the Hat Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 Breaking news on BBC says there will not be a strike Panic over! Government policy worked then...
James. Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 Government policy worked then... Yep, the Conservatives definitely come out of this looking good. Definitely.
Captain... Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 Government policy worked then... By creating a panic over fuel to show the tanker drivers what meanies they were and how terrible it would be if they did strike? DC: Look at these panicking morons, there isn't even a strike on, imagine what chaos you would cause if you did strike you would bring this country to its knees then the Germans would swoop in and finish what they started 60 years ago. And it will be all your fault. Unite: When you put it like that Dave then it is our moral duty not to strike and just bend over and think of England while we hold on to our ankles tightly and get rogered senseless by your massive purple phallus. Although if you read the article all it says is that it is not going to happen over Easter, because they are meeting to discuss things on Monday and need to give 7 days notice: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17558294 So there is still every chance of it happening.

It certainly puts some pressure on the unions I think. I wouldn't say it was well handled, but in a messy way I suspect that was the goal.

davieG Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 BBC In York, a woman suffered 40% burns on Thursday when petrol ignited as she was decanting it in her kitchen.
StanSP Posted 30 March 2012 Posted 30 March 2012 That woman is plain stupid. 'The cooker was on' as she was decanting fuel in her kitchen. Imbecile.
