England v Sweden match thread.

We beat them 1-0 around 7/8 months ago, so it's not impossible.

They're not invisible and Italy gave them more than a run for their money.

You mean Andy King doesn't play for them?

Young looked our best weapon going into the tournament. An assist in the first game but precious little from him since. Seems the whole "pressure" thing has sunk in.

Rooney back is a MASSIVE boost. (watch him get sent off against Ukraine now :( )

 It was Gerrard with the assist.

lol

Typo corrected :P

He means the walm up friendly against Norway

Well he scored the goal in that game, not an assist.

Saying we weren't that good is fair enough, but who has been?

Germany have been very efficient in both their games, but haven't set the world alight. Spain were poor vs Italy and lucky that Ireland were so shite they could dominate. Holland have been woeful defensively and have been beaten twice and are struggling to even get out their group. France drew with us! Portugal look woeful defensively, and Ronaldo is having a mare.

I'd say, from a biased view, on what's been shown so far we're not that far behind everyone else. On potential, if everyone plays their best, even I admit we're still pretty fúcked.

I like the look of us though, and I've not thought that for about 8 years at least.

I think Spain and Germany are playing with a startling confidence and assuredness that is scary for the rest of the competition, to be honest. Germany may not have looked explosive in the same way they were in the World Cup but they're beating what's in front of them with a calm measuredness and conserving themselves.

France looked tidy today without needing to get out of second gear, Russia wobbled a little in their big derby game but have some absolute class on the ball, the Czechs, Danes and Ukraine have all shown really promising glimmers in the games they won and I do fancy this Croatia side (sorry, Father Ted.)

Like I said, you've got a lot of positives to be proud of and given I think most of your fans rightfully see this as a transitional period I don't think you should be too worried at the moment. But you came very, very close today to almost going out and, really, if it wasn't for one inspired substitution you'd all be in a much, much more dour mood right now.

Just think you should keep your feet on the ground is all.

Where's the fun in that? We've got this in the bag.

It was like a Premiership game really.

Quality quite average and poor defending from both sides but some quality finishing from our boys.

Surprised to see Walcott make a big positive impact after a poor game from the 2 starting widemen.

Least it proved this squad have some fight in them not to give in.

Will Rooney come back in?

Of course Rooney will come back in and replace Carrol hes our best player. would think about changing milner as well and going with theo or ox

I really can't see us beating Spain, i think we need to finish top.

I'll class it as a successful tournament if we go out against Spain or any of the top sides without embarrassing ourselves like we did in the world cup

Tough choice as to who starts the next game. Will Gerrard and Parker be fit enough, who will make way for Rooney out of Carroll and Welbeck, and will Walcott start. We needed to win that! Absolutely fvcking fantastic!!!

I don't think England have been convincing, but they've gotten 4 points against opposition they've always had problems against. They'll have grown in confidence and with Rooney coming back (completely fresh as well), we might just experience an Arshavin effect. They should manage to get a draw against the Ukraine at least. As for their chances in the knockout stages, as long as they avoid Germany they'll always have a chance.

Welbeck what a quality player, such a beautiful finish, one of the best England goals I have ever seen... Him and Rooney upfront would be a nightmare for anyone....

There were many positives from last night but also a few negatives to go with that. Another great ball in by Gerrard and what a great header by Andy Carroll for the first, I didn't think Welbeck meant to do that at first, though having seen the replays, I now think he did! That said, I do find it very concerning the way that England's defence had completely capitulated and it really did feel like 'here we go again'. That said, the way that we did show the heart that we did to come back into the game afterwards was great to see and not something I'm generally used to while supporting England!

Clearly, bringing on Walcott completely swung the game back in our favour, if it wasn't for that substitution, we may well have lost that and Roy would be getting chastised right now. But well done to him! (Though I thought Walcott's goal was very lucky). Now we need to work out how to keep ahead in a game and stop dropping deeper and becoming more defensive every time we take the lead. Simple really!

And lol at Carroll when he booted the ball at the ref and went to hug him afterwards.

How good was Gerrard's cross for the goal? Pace and direction, all Carroll had to do was glance his head and direct the ball in. On the other hand, you get certain Leicester players that float the ball across so the strikers have to use so much neck muscle... Fantastic ball, Stevie.

Don't think Welbeck intended to score. Just looked like he tried to control the ball, and didn't.

Got to disagree with you there. I think, if you watch the goal again, DW realises the ball is going behind him and so he adjusts his body to be able hold off the defender and to make it easier to get a flick with his heel. He's possibly a bit fortunate it went in but I think he definitely meant it and it was a cracking piece of skill.

We may have let in two sloppy goals, but to comeback from 2-1 down in any competitive international and win 3-2 takes a lot of passion, something i haven't seen in a long time (Hodgson has already got them all singing the national anthem) I'm loving this at the moment! Hodgson tactics to change formation and bring on walcott was simply genius and it pulled off. His tactics were the reason we got a draw against France too. A lot of positives...the only negatives we can bring out is that we let two goals from two set pieces, however they'll be working on that in the training ground now, with Rooney coming back it can only get better! Young is my favourite player but has to be dropped for Rooney, Carroll and Welbeck don't deserve to be dropped!

Epic game - And I don't use the word epic very often, feel it is a very over used word, thanks to cringeworthy, annoying insurance advert.

Great, showed spirit, class and proved something.

Gotta drop Milner and start Walcott, for the first time in many years I am quite proud of the English national team.

However I am always happy to admit being proved wrong and I slagged Lescott off pre-match Monday - He scored, I slagged Carroll off yesterday - He scored, Milner....

Good night too, head hurts a little.

Disagree about dropping Milner. I think he performs a valuable service. He's dependable in possession, works hard to cover Glen Johnson when he comes forward and has a decent cross.

Walcott's pace is way more a threat if he's fresh and the game gets stretched, much like it did yesterday.

On another note, I think Gerrard has probably made the two best crosses I've seen in this tournament so far, for England's first 2 goals of the campaign.

To add to that, as much as I think he's enormously over-hyped and will never be world class, Andy Carroll's header yesterday was absolutely superb.

Good cross, yes, but great finish also.
