Bert Posted 18 October 2013 Posted 18 October 2013 We had the second best gd. Conceded the least goals bar Spain who played two fewer games and were unbeaten. Of course so were 5 others. Who knows, could be a blessing in disguise couldn't it
Uncle Albert Posted 18 October 2013 Posted 18 October 2013 I think it will be a blessing mate, see what I wrote about World Cup 2002 and Euro 2004 when we played a strong team in the group stage? Prepared us better for games further on in the tournament. People were saying earlier that Euro 2004 was the one, I think we had just as good a chance at the World Cup in 2002 if not better. We harshly went out to Brazil in a game that could of gone either way, just our luck that Ronaldinho lobbed David Seaman. If that game goes our way which it so easily could have then we would have been up against Turkey in the semi-final and then Germany who were without their main man in Michael Ballack, Germany were poor in that final as well, obviously it could of been a different scenario.

(Quarter Finals)
Uncle Albert Posted 18 October 2013 Posted 18 October 2013 2002 is still the only tournament where we have been the bookmakers favourites at some stage of it. (Quarter Finals) Not surprised! England v Brazil Senegal v Turkey Korea v Spain Germany v USA I think Germany had only just scraped past Paraguay to reach the quarters, Spain needed penalties to beat Ireland, nobody gave Korea, Senegal and Turkey a chance and Brazil were less convincing against Belgium. Yet we had spanked Group winners Denmark 3-0 and that should of been a lot more, never seen England play so well in a first half that day. We gained so much more confidence after that Argentina win in the group stage, we really kicked on from it and got us at the races a lot sooner. Honestly think we would have won that World Cup if we had beaten Brazil.

Totally agree with you here. I've thought this for a long time. I also think IF the game hadnt been played in such sweltering conditions then we would have dominated them physically but we ran out of gas. That team should have won that tournament.
Aus Fox Posted 19 October 2013 Posted 19 October 2013 On the baring hybrids if the seeding debacle it means we cannot play Holland, Italy or France/ Portugal if they qualify in the group stages. Could still get a group along the lines of Columbia Bakino Faso and Australia which shouldn't be to difficult a seeded team could play in a group with Spain Holland Ivory Coast and Chille which would be tough to pick a winner from.
Tielemans63 Posted 19 October 2013 Posted 19 October 2013 If you're a bit of a stats geek like me you might find this article interesting. Explains how the FIFA co-efficients work (or don't work) and the formula by which Switzerland have ended up a seeded team while Italy haven't. http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/pitchside-europe/switzerland-really-better-italy-fifa-insane-ranking-system-144405289.html
Dan Posted 21 October 2013 Posted 21 October 2013 By 'on the way' I mean they should've done it by Christmas. OFFICIAL DRAW; Portugal v Sweden Ukraine v France Iceland v Croatia Greece v Romania
Guest MattP Posted 21 October 2013 Posted 21 October 2013 Tricky for France and Portugal. Croatia get lucky, last fixture is a real pikey fest.
Guest shearfox Posted 21 October 2013 Posted 21 October 2013 Tricky for France and Portugal. Croatia get lucky, last fixture is a real pikey fest. Very tricky indeed, I'm very glad we avoided that... wouldn't be a surprise to see France or Portugal go out.
Finnegan Posted 21 October 2013 Posted 21 October 2013 Hopefully Zlatan, the world's second best player, will score the winner and leave the world's third best player at home.
MC Prussian Posted 21 October 2013 Posted 21 October 2013 Either Ronaldo or Ibrahimovic at the World Cup next year. Tough call, that. So sad we'll have to miss out on one of them.
Dan Posted 21 October 2013 Posted 21 October 2013 Most likely Zlatan and I doubt he'll be in 2018 either.
Donut Posted 21 October 2013 Posted 21 October 2013 Tricky for France and Portugal. Croatia get lucky, last fixture is a real pikey fest. I think Iceland will give Croatia a decent game over two legs, need to take a lead over to Croatia but they could nick a goal over there with the players theyve got going forward. I still think Croatia will win, but its a tricky tie
leicsmac Posted 21 October 2013 Posted 21 October 2013 Ibra to make Crissy cry again, Ukraine to go through with a clearly handballed goal in extra time of the second leg. Please.
Super_horns Posted 21 October 2013 Posted 21 October 2013 One world class player will be missing then.. Be nice to see Iceland win. Think it will be: PortugalCroatiaFranceGreece
bovril Posted 21 October 2013 Posted 21 October 2013 I hope Romania win after Greece's piss-poor football in the last 3 tournaments.
Brizzle Fox Posted 21 October 2013 Posted 21 October 2013 Always had a soft spot for Romania. Think it's because Hagi used to play for them. One of my favourite ever players. The Maradona of the carpathians

ozleicester Posted 23 October 2013 Posted 23 October 2013 Not a Qualifier as such, but a little World Cup news. 5 year appointment for the local boy... http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/football/ange-postecoglou-to-take-over-socceroos-coaching-job-after-ffa-negotiate-to-release-him-from-melbourne-victory-contract/story-fnii0fc4-1226744762581
Aus Fox Posted 23 October 2013 Posted 23 October 2013 Good appointment I think, really needs to be a big rebuild after the World Cup though so I hope he is given time. Who next for Melbourne Victory? Can we have a poll?
