Waghorn

He was excellent tonight, Waghorn of his loan spell is starting to creep back.

Really good to see, but that crossbar he should really get married to one.

Got to say he was unlucky (again) today .... had a great first 20 mins and last ten.

He did show some great technique today, not something i associate with him usually, maybe better watching him on tv as you can appreciate it more.

Just shows the quality of Nuge when he comes on and converts both of his chances (no arguments about minutes on pitch, coming off the bench etc as justification for a good striker - he just comes on and does the business).

How many times have you seen him play for the last five or six weeks? I think he's been that good technically for about that long.

Played well again today, and a good finish, but take nothing away from Vardy's ball because that was a fantastic pass to set up Waghorn. Still had a lot to do though, and finished well.

And to go back to page 17, because I did add my input to the Marlon King thing. All I said was Marlon King is a good Championship player, I didn't say anything to suggest I want him here. He was a criminal, yes, but so was Jamie Lawrence.

Anyone know the world record for most times a player has hit the bar in one season? Seriously unlucky will go on a run if goals if Nugent and Waggy can continue to play as they are we will be very difficult to beat

Think it was Beckford about a billion times last season. The pro-Beckford brigade used it to excuse his poor performances. Wonder if they'll do the same for Waghorn.

About 2/3rds of the games..... He's edged ahead of Vardy in the last few games for me, but still not a first choice striker - we still need a partner for Nuge that's as much of a threat as him.

That's exactly what happens yes!!!

Disagree with that.

When was the last time a club had two 20 goal a season strikers in this league (or any)?

The last time we were truly successful?

Which was?

Collymore / Heskey Springs to mind (although for one game!!!!

Who played up front with Cottee??

Speedie and Waller??

The answer is my memory is bad and I think you have a point ..... we haven't exactly had strike partnerships ..... But my point is that for us to be successful I'd like us to have a strike partnership that looks like it has 35 goals in it.

You'd like it. That doesn't mean we need it.

Although I'd suggest that if you've seen Waghorn and Nugent over the last few weeks, no they will not get 35 goals between them this season because of Waghorn's start, but they look like a real partnership now that can get plenty of goals.

25 for Nugent, 10 for Waghorn?

That's not being unreasonable IMO.

If Waghorn plays as he did today and we've got Nugent to partner him, we haven't got much of a problem.

However, we still need a goalscoring striker. I don't like the idea of us needing a goal and bringing on Vardy or Futacs, they really aren't great options if you want to score goals.

Even if Waghorn is playing like today, we need to have someone on the bench who can offer us something different.

This. It's exactly this logic which led to me floating the idea of using Nuge as a Dzeko/Solksjaer style impact sub. A couple of users laughed at the suggestion but it seems tactically preferable to me to be able to change the game with your sub striker than only having weaker, less reliable players on the bench. In games where you need to change things up to get something out of them the lack of another prolific finisher may cost us precious points. Obviously Nuge is so clinical for us that it seems a daft idea, but what do we do when we start him and for whatever reason aren't making an impact?

I'm sure Nige is on top of it though.

I may be wrong but I think the Les Ferdinand and Paul Dickov partnership last time we were in the Premier League under Micky Adams scored more goals than any partnership we had under O'Neill and they played a lot less games together too as they'd often rotate with Marcus Bent who also scored a few goals too.

Personally I thought that Ferdinand and Dickov partnership was the best (not including the one game partnership of Heskey and Collymore) we've had in the past 25 years and better than anything we had under O'Neiil. The season before when we had the Paul Dickov and Brian Dean partnership was also as good a strikeforce as they come at this level and the main reason we got promoted that season. Still think Paul Dickov and Brian Deane were both very good players for us who often get forgotten when talking about our best strikers of the past 20 years or so. It's such a shame our defence let us down that season, as we did actually have a very decent attack.

As controversial as it may be I actually thought Dickov was a better player than either Claridge, Marshall or Cottee in a much weaker side. In his first spell though obviously, he was poor in his second spell. As for Les Ferdinand, well, similar to Collymore, he was a class apart and what we'd have given to have him in his prime and not as an old man who couldn't train or play 2 games in a week.

Of course the last time we had two 20 goal a season strikers was when we had Gary Lineker and Alan Smith, who are still by far and away the best strike force I've ever seen at Leicester. I honestly think that was the second best strikeforce in the country at the time only behind Dalglish and Rush.

All this talk of having two twenty goals a season strikers, they are the rarest thing in the game! We haven't had a 20 goal a season striker in the last 20 years( league goals in top two divisions) why does anyone think we could or should have 2 of them now?

It seems like two certain people on this forum seem to bring Beckford into nearly every topic. He's not here for the time being so why still bang on about him.

Yes he was poor last season but who wasn't with the exception of a couple players?

I would have liked to have seen Beckford given a proper run in the team this season just like Vardy and Waghorn have been given.

Anyway well done Waggy good performance and a nice finish. I'm sure Mark_W has got his trousers round ankles, cock in hand and re-winding his goal over and over.

Great post ..... Wish my memory would serve me that well!!!!

Ferdinand is still my favourite player to pull on a city shirt ..... the header he scored on his home debut from the edge of the box thundered home as he clashed into two defenders and knocked himself out ..... Proper brave number 9 .... and pure class.

Some posters seem to want to bring my cock into every topic, it's quite disconcerting.

Did you get erect at Waggy's goal though?

Only joking, in the words of Kingfox "it's only banter"
