ithuriel Posted 27 December 2012 Posted 27 December 2012 Don't see that Whitbread is much different to Elliot or Taggart. They had their limitations but were good enough to play in the Prem. If you accept Whitbread can't do all the flash stuff Bamba could do, but can actually defend, then he's more than adequate for the Championship. No, from what i have seen he is not all that great, adequate yes but nothing more. Morgan is a far better defender and St.Ledger had actually come good before his injury and was better. He would get no where near Elliot, Taggart or Prior. What lets him down, other than giving the ball away in dangerous areas with bad passes is the sudden rushes of blood to the head he seems to get. He has improved and may continue to improve but i do worry that at some point in the match he is going to massively screw up just like i used to worry about St.Ledger last season.
dedlock Posted 27 December 2012 Posted 27 December 2012 Many want us to sign Charlie Austin.Look at his development,he made the step up from non-league via lower league and played 50 or more games for Burnley before his prolific feats this season. Vardy,in contrast has come straight to the Championship. He shows great energy, has put defenders under pressure and has a number of assists. Strikers thrive on confidence,we are told. The wonderful header at Blackburn ,wrongly ruled out ,and last weekend's header against the bar show potential. His overall play and enthusiasm show potential. It would have been amazing had be adapted to the higher level of play immediately. Time will tell but I see optimistic signs.

Vardy for all his effort is never going to be in that class. I think if he dropped down a level he will find his goal scoring touch again because he will be up against lower class defenders, the likes of which he has been used too. It's a shame because we all love the kind of player who always puts a good shift in.
David Hankey Posted 28 December 2012 Posted 28 December 2012 The fact is 'Reg' Vardy is finding the gulf between the Conference and the Championship very wide and whilst we can see he has potential he's not getting a quarter of the time on the ball he once enjoyed. Will he make the grade, only time will tell. Can we afford to wait, we have no option really but at the end of the season a searching assessment will need to be made along with other players.

The way I look at is that, if we had signed him from another Championship team we wouldn't all be screaming 'robbed' at the top of our voices. This is to his credit, as it could've so easily been a complete and utter failure.

foxy fox Posted 28 December 2012 Posted 28 December 2012 vardy is clearly a winger, his strengths are his pace, assists, beating a man
Lambert09 Posted 28 December 2012 Posted 28 December 2012 The thing ive noticed is he is too scared to shoot. He has been since day one. We all know he can find the net, he did that plenty for Fleetwood, the issue is the large crowds and extra pressure is clearly weighing him down. I dont think he needs to be written off, just loaned down a league. The rumour to Tranmere is ideal tbh, good side, top manager but their fans have 0 expectations. Even if it was just a month, I could see it having a huge positive impact on him..... However, age is not on his side.
Bryn Posted 28 December 2012 Posted 28 December 2012 I wouldn't be upset if we loaned him out, I think it would do him a lot of good, he's got ability, just needs games and goals.

FoxyPV Posted 28 December 2012 Posted 28 December 2012 As it stands that's what he has been. He's hardly been a failure. He just hasn't been the prolific scorer everyone thought he would be.
Weller in Tights Posted 28 December 2012 Posted 28 December 2012 Full marks for effort but I feel he is just 'out-strengthed' by every defender he comes up against. Not his fault, we paid the money to jump him up a number of leagues, but Pearson needs to admit defeat and realise he is not good enough. (Maybe he has realised and hence the Woods signing)
dmayne7 Posted 28 December 2012 Posted 28 December 2012 I open up this thread to see a debate about Whitbread and Morgan?! I expect to see Wellens and Beckford in there but to be talking about defenders when the topic is a striker; I give up
foxile5 Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 As it stands that's what he has been. 4 goals 4 assists is not an abject failure, it's a reasonable return.....we haven't gotten our money's worth, but it's not like we've been robbed blind either. He's just been fair to middling, which I feel is what we should have been expecting. People have been assuming this is going to be another Alan Smith.
Tielemans63 Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 Think some time as a super-sub might do him some good. His pace could be a real factor against tired defences and it might also take the pressure off him a little. He could be our version of a Solskjaer / Chicarito type player (no, really).
cjslcfc Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 Out of his depth in terms of goalscoring and composure, yes. But he is still getting used to this league, it's been a massive step up. He gets nowhere near the amount of time on the ball he used to and is now playing against much quicker, stronger, and more experienced defenders. Personally, while he has not set the world alight his work rate is second to none and does a lot of things that go unnoticed. When he was forced off vs cardiff i thought we missed him. I thought we missed his runs, his pace drawing defenders away and his overall play. He still has a lot to learn and I'm sure he will find his feet, he just might not be the goalscoring machine we so want.
cc_star Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 As it stands that's what he has been. Chatting shit, just like many in this thread. He makes the team, when he's on the pitch the team play better, we struggled to get going in first few games of the season when Beckford started, then Vardy came in & very rare odd performance aside we ripped up most teams on the rise to the top of the table. He scored a respectable amount of goals per game along the way then he missed a game or two through illness, then picked up an injury - He's not scored to the same level since getting back into the team but still weighs in with great performances and assists and not forgetting one of the most immense workrates we've seen allowing us to carry 'luxury' players like Knocky. It's no surprise we fell flat against Cardiff when he was subbed injured & had little movement forcing our players to resort to longball. Likewise not much happened up front against Hull as again we lacked the hardwork & industry needed to put defenders under pressure, work the channels, pull them out of position to make room for others etc & etc He's been anything other than out his depth or a failure. This thread, even by FoxesTalk standards is laughable & an embarrassment & is pretty representative of the quality of support to the club, manager & players this season.

SteveG Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 Hi, Fleetwood fan here. Just thought i would have a look to see what you think of Vardy considering we're struggling to score this season! If you want to send him back to us on loan then that would be much appreciated!

If you want to send him back to us on loan then that would be much appreciated! Only if you give us our million back.
sdb Posted 2 January 2013 Posted 2 January 2013 Sure it's mentioned elsewhere but looks to be off on loan to a L1 side.
Guest Posted 2 January 2013 Posted 2 January 2013 Sure it's mentioned elsewhere but looks to be off on loan to a L1 side. Can see him carving up League 1.
Danizen Posted 2 January 2013 Posted 2 January 2013 Can see him carving up League 1. Hope so. He needs confidence.
Guest Posted 2 January 2013 Posted 2 January 2013 Hope so. He needs confidence. He's got a lot of skill. It'll be good for him and he can come back to the City an even better player.
Grey Fox Posted 2 January 2013 Posted 2 January 2013 I still think he can play a part for us this season. He can also play wide, so why not try him there before we ship him off somewhere?
