Well that's pretty much that then.

Amazing to think Koepka will have as many majors as Seve.

I use the ShotScope GPS and data tracking watches, the old V3 and this years new X5, and know one of the guys from ShotScope on a golfing forum I frequent.

I just got offered the chance to be part of their potential future content day next month with Today's Golfer magazine at Portal Golf Club in Cheshire, where I would play 9 holes with Peter Finch and get some extra ShotScope products free.

Only snag is it's a weekday afternoon and I can't get the time off at such short notice so had to turn it down 🙁

As a 20 handicap hacker I'd probably have  shat myself playing with a club professional any way!

That's a bummer :(

I played the Championship course at Portal a few years ago and was very impressed. It's the arsehole end of the earth to get to but was worth the trip.

Playing with Peter Finch would be cool. I love his swing and like his instruction videos on YT but do find him a little bit up his own arse sometimes. Maybe he's different IRL...

And missing out on all those ShotScope freebies too? That hurts.

Couldn't you take a days holiday or throw a sickie? Seems a shame to miss out on all that.

All holidays have been booked up for the June weeks already. Always the same in the summer months. I don't like chucking single day sickies as I've had to have a lot of time of before with my Colitis which work have been very understanding about.

Not really sure if this is the right place to post as most comments are about PGA & LIV but the topic is ‘golf’ so thought I’d post anyway.

I love golf, but I play casually. Not a member anywhere, never been given a handicap etc just play locally when I can. If I did I’d imagine it would be high because I’m not good  by any stretch of the imagination.  I used to play a lot more and when I had the kids didn’t play for years and have started to get back into it a bit over the last 6/7 months but with the kids still being  relatively young only get to go about once a month.

when I played frequently I got frustrated with my irons so changed over to graphite shafts and absolutely loved them. But since I’ve gone back I’m really struggling with distance (I’m blaming it being graphite but imagine it’s not that). I’ve completely stagnated in terms of getting better and I’m not sure what I can do to improve my distance and was looking for some tips?

it’s not that I’m not hitting it cleanly or anything like that and I know the power is in the swing rather than the ‘force’ I’m just unsure if anybody had similar?

I know ideally I need lessons but with the cost of living crisis, time and having young children I’ve just got no hope of getting the green light on that.

I don't hit it that far either but it doesn't bother me one bit. I think amateur golfers get too hung up on distance. They hear the pros and commentators droning on about guff like swing speed, ball speed, spin rates etc. Find the right tempo for your swing and just concentrate on getting a good, clean strike on the ball out of the middle of the club. And just enjoy the game.

Indeed. I was watching a Golf Mates video last night with an 80 year old guy playing and he still breaks 90 regularly with a handicap of around 12. He only hits his driver 180 and all he does is aim away from danger, lays up short of hazards all the way round, and plays for bogeys.

I'm getting quite into it at the moment having dabbled a few years ago.

Signed up as a member for Beedles Lake par 3 which will hopefully improve my approaches to the green.

Played at The Leicestershire last week in what was probably my 10th full 18 holes in my lifetime and shot 104. Was over the moon with that considering I shot 10 on the first hole. My biggest issue is that I can't get to grips with the hybrid or wood so can hit a nice drive down the centre and then have to drop down to a 6 iron and keep falling short of the greens. Just need to spend some time on the range with those two clubs to try and make something click!!

I do get that but I’m trying to improve it because I’m finding when my friends are using a 8/7 I’m having to drop down to a 6/5 iron. It’s not that I want to hit further than my friends,  it’s that it’s causing far too much carry with those sorts of clubs I find my self running off the back of the greens if I go for them.

To counter that you could argue I should use less of a club but as soon as I go into 7 territory I get zero carry because I get so much loft and it almost stops dead (which is good if your exactly the right distance out which I never am)

my issue is 7 and above is loft and stops dead and 6 and below I just get to much carry, it’s almost like I need a club in between them to solve all my issues haha. I’d drop so many shots in my round if I didn’t have that huge gulf in difference between those two clubs

when I say too much carry, that sounds like I’m a big hitter when I’m really not. It’s still a short distance for a 6/5 just the flight of the ball changes so much I have far less control with a lower iron

I'm stumped. Maybe look at purchasing a 9-wood? Lots of pros (mainly women but I know Tommy Fleetwood does/has used one too) use it instead of the longer irons because you can hit it high and still retain the distance.

Lessons is the answer really as it's difficult for anyone to give you advice on the forum without seeing your swing.

One thing that started during Covid was pro's giving lessons 'virtually' where you send them a video of your swing, they diagnose it, and then provide you with feedback and suggested drills. It's a lot cheaper than 'in person' lessons and might be a good half way house if money/time is tight

Other than that, YouTube is your friend. There's dozens of good golf creators on there giving free instruction but it's a minefield of contradiction so I'd maybe just choose one or two to follow.

Thanks for that, I didn’t know about the online lessons.

I know if I go for lessons they’ll take me back to the beginning and unteach anything self taught as I know my swing isn’t right

Not necessarily.

Most will say they'll "work with what you've already got" rather than go back to the beginning, but it depends what your specific goals are really.

If you do the on-line route, one of the best platforms is Skillest apparently. You download the app, see the list of coaches, pick your favourite, upload your swing video, and get feedback/drills usually within 24 hours. Not sure how much it costs but will be less than face to face.

Just PM @Milo and ask him what he's done.

Guy has turned in to prime Tiger.

Practically got one leg as well lol

My third leg is the most impressive, so I’m told…

I’ve been diabolical recently

Had a lesson around 6 weeks back as I have a tendency to duff absolutely everything when playing off soggy or soft ground.

It’s changed my backswing to become more economical and to also hinge my wrists more (and most importantly to release them at the correct point- not halfway down my backswing like I have been doing)

Its setting me back months, and I can’t revert back to my old swing now the grounds hard because I’m too far into this ‘new’ swing

I actually feel there’s a lot to be said for NOT having lessons once you can hit the thing relatively straight

This is why, when I do finally get time to have lessons, I want them purely for driving.

Don't get me wrong, my irons have been hideous lately, but I know I can hit them well, just inconsistently, as I don't get enough time to practice.

Whereas I always struggle with a slice with a driver or 3 wood.

Just help me fix that and I can work on the rest.

I’m the opposite to you then

I don’t use my driver at all now (anyone want to buy a good condition SIM btw?) 🤣My 3 wood is often like a laser and I hit it further than driver too

It’s the most frustrating sport on earth

This "10 inch" tip really helped with both my driver and irons to stop slicing. It came from an interview that went viral with John Rahm who said he used to do this.

I address the ball as normal with irons but still deliberately close my hips and shoulders. I hit draws pretty much all the time now when I get my sequencing right on the downswing. If my hands get too ahead I hook it a bit, behind and I push it right a bit.
