Guest MattP Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Your joking aint ya, they've got about 50-60 hours worth of coverage, it's just no one cares. I can barely remember ever seeing it on British tv.
ScouseFox Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 I remember watching a fúcking intense curling match (or game or whatever it's called) at about half 3 in the morning at the last one in Vancouver. BBC2 I think. Gonna watch loads of curling again this year, it's great.
hairy Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 The Winter Olympics pretty much gets zero coverage over here from what I can remember, I couldn't name you one British competitior and I'm a right Sport Billy. Amy Williams won gold last time http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_Williams Coverage
Captain... Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Amazing! Steven Bradbury it was his last tournament before he was to retire. In the Quarter Final he got knocked out only for someone to get disqualified. In the Semi's people fell in front of him and he was able to scape thru to the Final. Then this happend in the final. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAADWfJO2qM Brilliant, I love the mad scramble to get a toe over the line for silver and bronze. Reminds me of Lindsey Jacobellis, 2006 I was watching a Snowboard final with some Canadians and this American bird was storming it, well watch it for yourself. You have to get to the end to see why this was so funny, just skip from the end of the race to 4:50 for the replay. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPCOin3l8OY
Jordan Posted 6 February 2014 Author Posted 6 February 2014 those canadians love their games!Yeah, they're really up for it over there. Obviously winter sports are big in Canada anyway, but the Olympics' profile was raised even more by Vancouver 2010. It looks like a lot of their athletes have arrived in Sochi earlier than those from other cohntries, too.

But Canadian TV is awful, so its unsurprising they dedicate so much time to it especially considering the most watched TV show in Canada last year was a documentary about pencils.
LeicesterBran Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 I'm looking forward to the Bobsleigh, Snowboarding, Ice hockey and Skiing. My favourite sport is Snowboarding, in fact I'm going to try it next week. Also cannot wait to see the Jamaican Bobsleigh team.
Chilwell_Fox Posted 7 February 2014 Posted 7 February 2014 Why do we have to wait until wednesday for the men's ice hockey? Wounded...
Jordan Posted 7 February 2014 Author Posted 7 February 2014 I remember watching a fúcking intense curling match (or game or whatever it's called) at about half 3 in the morning at the last one in Vancouver. BBC2 I think. Gonna watch loads of curling again this year, it's great. I ****ing love curling and as I said before, I will be all over this. There's nothing like seeing a skip make a difficult shot in a big-pressure situation.I would hope the curling Sochi is every bit as exciting as it was in Vancouver, but I think it helped that 2010 featured a more raucous crowd than what you'll usually see at an Olympics or a major curling tournament. If you want intense curling, you'd do well to watch the Canadian teams. The men, skipped by Brad Jacobs, have risen from being a good tour team to being arguably the best team in the world over two years. His front end (the Harnden brothers) could easily be mistaken for hockey players and they are monster sweepers. Also, despite playing in a sport not known for passion, these guys get pumped up out there on the ice. The women are skipped by Jennifer Jones, who has a flair for the dramatic, perhaps even making the greatest ever championship-winning shot back in the 2005 Tournament of Hearts final. If the curling gods have their way, it will be Jones vs Muirhead for gold. Why do we have to wait until wednesday for the men's ice hockey? Wounded... That's because the NHL is still going through Saturday. This weekend, there will be a massive airlift of players to Newark, NJ, where players and staff will board charter flights to Sochi.I, too, cannot wait. I'm going to be off from work Wednesday and Thursday, so I'll be ready for those opening games. I would gladly wake up at strange hours to watch Team USA. I think this will be a rather wide-open tournament, with several teams having legitimate chances to win gold. Big injury-related news out of North America this week: first, Steven Stamkos tried desperately to recover above schedule from a broken leg to get to Sochi, but alas, he was not cleared by Tampa Bay and Canada's medical staff to play. He'll be replaced by Lightning teammate Martin St. Louis, who is easily one of my favorite players in hockey. Also, Henrik Sedin will miss the Olympics due to a rib injury, which will be a big blow to Sweden. Edit: P.S., at what Ralph Lauren designed for USA to wear at the a Opening Ceremony:
Guest MattP Posted 7 February 2014 Posted 7 February 2014 Claire Balding and Colin Jackson doing the opening ceremony. Gays 2-0 Putin.
ScouseFox Posted 7 February 2014 Posted 7 February 2014 Never knew there was such a big time difference between here and Sochi. 5am the curling starts on Monday. Bastard early that.
Webbo Posted 8 February 2014 Posted 8 February 2014 Anyone watching the snowboarding? Great sport, shame our lads just missed out on the medals. The commentators are a bit crap.
Super_horns Posted 8 February 2014 Posted 8 February 2014 Anyone watching the snowboarding? Great sport, shame our lads just missed out on the medals. The commentators are a bit crap. Saw that - bit unlucky but those guys are very brave and pretty amazing. Then again most of the events in the Olympics in terms of how dangerous and dare devil they are put those footballers who roll around at the slightest touch to shame.
Stadt Posted 8 February 2014 Posted 8 February 2014 Jordan is curling a big deal in the US? Because over here nobody really cares about it
Jordan Posted 8 February 2014 Author Posted 8 February 2014 Jordan is curling a big deal in the US? Because over here nobody really cares about it It's not that big of a deal, and it's mostly either a niche sport or a novelty. But around the Olympics, interest in curling spikes, and over the past few years the sport has become more popular. Part of this is due to the NBC networks airing a game in every draw of the men's and women's Olympics curling tournaments live. In 2006 and 2010, curling has been a huge surprise success on TV, and in fact it's been one of the most popular events in terms of ratings even if people are still relatively unfamiliar with the sport. Some of the draws in the 2010 curling tournament had TV viewership of almost 2 million. We have about 165 clubs and about 17,000 registered players here, so yeah, it's a "cult" sport. Minnesota and Wisconsin (and historically, North Dakota) are the "hotbeds" of American curling. But those numbers are about 70% higher than they were 10 years ago, in large part due to interest generated by the Olympics, and I guarantee you those numbers will continue to rise. I, myself, became interested because of the Olympics, and all the while I had no idea that I was living within 5 miles of a curling club until I did a web search on a whim four years ago. (Edit: to give you a reference point, we have a little more than 500,000 registered ice hockey players in the USA.)
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 9 February 2014 Posted 9 February 2014 Stayed up last night watching the moguls was good to see an Aussie 19yr old come 5th. Now watching Slopestyle snow boarding, quality event.
