davieG Posted 5 February 2015 Author Share Posted 5 February 2015 Gary Glitter has been found guilty of historical sex abuse against three young girls between 1975 and 1980. The 70-year-old former singer - real name Paul Gadd - was convicted of attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one of having sex with a girl under the age of 13. Gadd, who denied all charges, was acquitted of three other counts at Southwark Crown Court, London. He was remanded in custody to be sentenced on 27 February. He could face up to life imprisonment for the offence of having sex with an underage girl. 'Ashamed' The court heard one victim was under the age of 10 when Gadd, of Marylebone, central London, tried to rape her in 1975. She said the singer had crept into her bed as she slept and that afterwards she had felt "ashamed and dirty". She only managed to escape by moving away and then wrapping herself in sheets and blankets. The victim told the trial she had been to the star's mansion a number of times as a child and that after the attack, drunken Gadd had fallen asleep in the bed while she locked herself in a bathroom. Gadd also attacked two other girls, aged 12 and 13, after inviting them backstage to his dressing room. He had claimed he could not have abused them there because he had been cleaning his wig. Gary Glitter hit the height of his fame in the 1970s Gadd was also cleared of two counts of indecent assault and one count of administering a drug or other thing in order to facilitate sexual intercourse. The jury of seven women and five men had been considering their verdicts since Wednesday. Det Ch Insp Mick Orchard of the Metropolitan Police said Gadd had "shown himself to be a sexual predator who took advantage of the star status afforded to him by targeting young girls who trusted him and were in awe of his fame". He added that "his lack of remorse and defence that the victims were lying make his crimes all the more indefensible". 'Devious and manipulative' Gadd, the first person to be arrested as part of Operation Yewtree, had been jailed for four months in 1999 after admitting possessing thousands of images of child pornography. Peter Watt, director of national services for the NSPCC, said: "Glitter was devious and manipulative throughout this trial. "Thankfully the jury has seen through all the fake tears, and his attempts to paint his victims as liars, gold diggers or opportunistic fantasists. "He tried to portray himself as the victim in this case, as a remorseful, penitent man who had paid for his previous crimes but now faced malicious new allegations. It was just another performance. "His previous convictions, including those for possession of more than 4,000 indecent images of children and sexual assaults in Vietnam, were indicative of a predatory sexual interest in children spanning decades." Mark Castle, chief executive of charity Victim Support, said: "We hope this verdict will encourage people who have been sexually abused to speak out or seek help. "Unless they have confidence in the criminal justice system, abusers like Paul Gadd will not be brought to justice."
davieG Posted 5 February 2015 Author Share Posted 5 February 2015 Gary Glitter trial: Leicester councillor describes catching the glam rocker abusing a 12-year-old girl at the Holiday Inn By PA_Warzynski | Posted: February 05, 2015 Gary Glitter (Paul Gadd) will be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court for sexual offences against minors Comments (0)A Braunstone councillor has told how she found paedophile pop star Gary Glitter in the bath with a 12-year-old girl while she was working as a chambermaid at Leicester’s Holiday Inn. Anne Glover came forward with claims she walked in on the rocker with the girl in 1977 after reading about his trial in the Leicester Mercury last month. Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, 70, is facing life behind bars for offences against young girls which took place during the peak of his career. One of the incidents involved the glam rocker luring a besotted 12-year-old fan to the Holiday Inn, in St Nicolas Circle, where he subjected her to a night of alcohol-fuelled sexual abuse. RELATED CONTENT Kirby Muxloe fire: Police search for clues after woman's body found in blazing house Woman charged with manslaughter and child neglect following death of one-year-old Leicester bogus designer wear family warned they may have to pay back £173,000 Details of the act were heard at Southwark Crown Court, where Glitter was yesterday found guilty of sexually abusing three schoolgirls almost four decades ago. Braunstone Councillor Anne Glover was working at the Holiday Inn at the time of Glitter's abuse In a statement read out by the judge, Councillor Glover described how she had burst in on Glitter in the bath with a young girl. “I immediately recognised Gary Glitter as I had seen him thousands of times on the telly. “It was clearly him as he had big quiffy hair at the front that had been slicked back at the sides with big sideboards. “The girl who was sitting at the other end of the bath I could only see from her shoulders upwards because of her size. “She was sitting with her knees up under her chin. She looked very skinny with natural blonde hair.” Coun Glover reported the horrific scene to her supervisor at the time, who replied: “Well, you know what they're like.” Although it was read out in court, Coun Glover’s evidence was not put before the jury because it was adduced too late. Therefore, it could not be reported until after the verdict was reached. Jurors deliberated for less than two days before finding Glitter guilty of attempted rape, unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 and four counts of indecent assault. The pervert was cleared of two counts of sexual assault and one count of administering alcohol with intent to stupefy or overpower to enable unlawful sexual intercourse. Glitter’s spectacular downfall began in 1997, when he was caught with 4,000 sickening images on his laptop of children being sexually abused. The images were discovered after he put his computer in for repair at PC World in Bristol. He was the first person arrested and the fifth person charged as part of Operation Yewtree - the investigation set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal. Fox92 Posted 2 March 2015 Share Posted 2 March 2015 Good luck with that one, guys: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/mar/01/gary-glitter-fans-paul-gadd-facebook There's some weird comments on Facebook so this isn't a surprise. But if you're a massive fan and have always been a massive fan, I don't know what the reaction would be like. Are you supposed to stop listening to the music you've always loved and get rid of your memorabilia etc? Is that what others expect you to do? Not sure how I'd react if the same happened to a musician I admire. Not that I listen to Glitter, mind. But Oasis' cover of 'Hello' is really good and 'Rock n Roll Christmas' by Glitter is one of my favourite Christmas songs.
