Player Analysis Creates More Than Carrick: How This Midfield Lynchpin Took Leicester To The Top By Tim Simon Posted on January 23, 2014 Leicester City have been the team to beat in the Championship so far this season. The Foxes currently sit five points ahead of nearest rivals’Queens Park Rangers at the top of the table, having only dropped points in eight league games so far. They are rightly the favourites to gain promotion to the Premier League after showing the consistency that is necessary to get out of the extremely competitive second tier of English football. They have won their last six games to move clear at the summit, their best run of the season by some distance, with Danny Drinkwater emerging as a key figure in their midfield. The former Manchester United youngster has been at the heart of everything the Foxes have done all season, having not missed a single league game, playing in all 26 matches and only failing to make the starting line-up once. Drinkwater hasn’t really done anything truly special this season, but what has been so impressive is his sheer consistency. He is a constant source of creativity, rarely gives the ball away in dangerous areas and loves to keep the game simple with his short passing. His reliability on the ball is something which has set him apart from other midfielders in the Championship. Drinkwater has completed 1170 passes this season at a success rate of 82%. When you take into account the fact 63.5% of his passes go forwards, his record becomes all the more impressive. Drinkwater may keep play ticking over well, but also has a keen eye for a killer pass. He has created 31 chances for his Leicester teammates this season, most of them coming from the central area. He can spot a pass from anywhere on the pitch, interestingly three of those created chances have come from his own half. As well as his ability on the ball, Drinkwater has shown throughout this season that he is willing to get stuck in too. He gets up and down the pitch for his team regularly and has completed three defensive actions per game for the Foxes. He has also won 40 tackles at a 55% success rate, proving that he is by no means just a ball-playing midfielder; he is definitely one of the Championship’s elite box-to-box midfielders. Although he isn’t in the team to score, Drinkwater has chipped in with three goals this season. Yet, it is his all-round game that has seen him become such a key figure in this promotion-chasing Leicester team. They will be hoping Drinkwater can maintain his consistency for the whole season as they look to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2004
Bayfox Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 stats make very good reading, not going to slag him off, but my 2 year old boy could make more than carrick. more forward passes.
MrSpaM Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 Somebody delete this thread, Fulham might put a bid in for him
foxes_rule1978 Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 He has been my player of the season, just adds so much to the team.
Fox92 Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 Not going to compare, it's two totally different divisions. But you can only play against what's in front of you, and Drinkwater has been immense this season. Has the ability to dominate games, and the stats are looking good. When he's on form, the team are. Top player. The partnership of James and Drinkwater really has grown, and it is our best midfield partnership no doubt.
Dan Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 He's been absolutely brilliant this season. Genuine playmaker.
Lionator Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 He did it to us in that Barnsley game two years ago. That's why Pearson signed him.
foxes_rule1978 Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 He did it to us in that Barnsley game two years ago. That's why Pearson signed him. He certainly did, it was funny because I was wishing we had a player like him, not long after he signs for us
Captain... Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 Great stats, but keep them under your hat, can we revisit all of those Drinkwater is shit threads, just in case anyone is snooping around on here.
BrummieFOX Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 "Drinkwater has completed 1170 passes this season at a success rate of 82%. Remember him getting quite a bit of stick for passing the ball sideways a lot. Clearly not true.
Corky Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 So much for the carping that he only passes backwards.
VLC86 Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 He certainly did, it was funny because I was wishing we had a player like him, not long after he signs for us Can you please wish for promotion?
AKCJ Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 Amazed that he's played 60 odd % of his passes forwards. I think he's one of the best players we've got but I'd have guessed that figure would have been about 40%. I thik the performances of Drinkwater and James have been the major reason we've done so well. They let our front four play by doing their dirty work. I think this is the first January for years where I genuinely don't think we can get anyone, realistically, who could improve our first 11.
Out Foxed Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 So much for the carping that he only passes backwards. last season he did....
Aylestone Fox Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 Absolutely love this,.been my fave player almost since he signed
crisp packet Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 When he plays well we do! Our form last year coincided with his .... Great player!!!
THEBIGJOHNSTEADER; Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 The mans foreskin is rightfully being sucked at the moment. Keep on Danneh!!!
Hungry Hungry Fox Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 Fair play to him! You get less time on the ball in the championship, sign of a quality player
JonnyBoy Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 my housemate's bird knows him. Went out with her best mate, apparently he is a right player (pun not intended)
Vlad The Impaler Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 Love this. Remember him getting quite a bit of stick for passing the ball sideways a lot. Clearly not true. 2nd half of last season it was all he did with the ball. This season he's been a different player, the best CM we've had since Izzet. Keep it up Danny!
Langston Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 my housemate's bird knows him. Went out with her best mate, apparently he is a right player (pun not intended) He's a footballer, does anybody expect much else? Long as he's the bizzo on the pitch he can finger as many lovelies as he wants.
