Wigan Post Match Thread 2 - 2

Got away with it basically.

Not much more to add except Moore was good, Kingy never forgets how to finish and if we could defend set pieces I don't think we'd concede another goal all season, let alone lose a game. Nice to score from one too, though.

Maybe because we only need 3 more wins he's going to play our strongest team against the poorer opposition to further ensure we get the job done whilst also giving the squad players a chance in the games that we wouldn't be guaranteed to win. Just a theory.

Mainly I think he has a lot of faith in the squad

I would imagine you are very close to their thinking with that.

I get this argument but what I don't understand is why Wigan away of all games?? We had Yeovil at home last Tuesday and Wednesday at home this Friday both much easier games to role out a few players who need a kick. Fair enough he's got away with it tonight despite the fact that they were the better team. Just don't get the thinking behind it myself, hardly a major gripe but it still doesn't make sense to me.

We have 3 games in 6 days...

Just give that a moment to sink in.....

Does it make sense now?

First ive really seen of hammond - i was impressed with Him. Did a good job of covering the back four. Great player for an away game such as this one.

Shame to concede twice from set pieces. Apart from that we never really looked in trouble.

Good to see konch and dyer back.

Good performance, great result.

No idea how the moaners are contriving to turn this into a disaster of some sort. I really wonder how some people get through life.

Really, because I didn't see hi make any tackles in front of the back four. What I did see was numerous break aways from Wigan where we were exposed at the back, and Hammond was nowhere to be seen.

My thoughts exactly.

Would people rather the team struggle against a good team away or struggle against a poor team at home? A loss at home against Wednesday would have given extra confidence to QPR and Derby.

This was simply a good draw. No more, no less. Now we will go on to beat Sheffield.

The analysis is too much. We fielded a weakened side and have come away from home with a point.

Well done City.

AND we are still unbeaten. Youngy's prediction is looking ever more real.

Or maybe he felt to get the best out of the players for the remaining games, they needed to miss today.

Maybe he did. In fact he probably did. But that would be more to do with conservatism than actual logic.

Tonight really did remind of a cup game. One of those where certain players could play, but the manager would rather play it safe.

Let me put it this way, if we were closer to the chasing pack there's no way I can believe we'd have played that team tonight.

God help us if we lose our first game in the premiership

As long as it is not 0 - 5 type result.

We are never guaranteed a win, although I think you're right he was quite happy to write off tonight as a free game with weaker opposition ahead, which is not the right way to go about it for me. Still I guess it's far too late for any of this to matter too much.

Maybe Pearson made the changes because of reports from the fitness staff. There's no point playing our best players while fatigued and risking injuries when we are in a comfortable position. Plus, it's not like we fielded academy players. I thought the performance was poor though over all. I don't think any of the replacements can have much of a claim on the first team.

Agree with that. I don't feel remotely concerned most of the time from open play that we'll concede, but it's happening quite a bit from set pieces.

Firstly, a point is a decent result. I've said that. Not great, but perfectly fine with the position we're in. However, we were a bit fortunate in the sense that we were very poor and scored our second out of the blue, with a well taken set piece no doubt. I have my opinion on certain players but some people seem unable to distance themselves from theirr love of Pearson to accept that our selection tonight was a bit strange, and wass, put simply, a weakened team.

Secondly, maybe they wouldn't be able to get through 90 minutes. Maybe they would. Maybe it wouldn't matter, because we could bring them off after the job is done, or after they stop being effective in the match. I'd rather put our best foot forward, and then go with plan B as a response, personally. Tonight we started with plan C.

I'm not going to join the Hammond love in though. Despite his goal I think he's been awful for us, and I'm not surprised we struggled tonight with him among so many changes.

Ahhh I get it now, you are 1 of the other championship managers, who just wants to prove your qualifications are based on

Top results in your daily job........who ever you are, you aint top of the championship.Nigel Pearson is.

Excellent result. 4 points from the best two teams in the league (besides us) away from home. I would have taken that last week. Dreamland. Well done for such a professional performance.

Well we didn't win did we?

Yet some people on here are so quick to point out Pearson got his selection right. Well if our aim, first and foremost, is to win a match, which it is, then I'd say that's very debatable.

So I'd say Pearson got his selection wrong tonight, even if we win on Friday. We've still dropped 2 points tonight.

Now, if I'm not entitled to my opinion because I don't know the exact fitness situation of the club (though, let's face it, we all know no one is injured) then that's pretty ridiculous.

Again, you are missing the point. The aim is to win every game, not just this one. Yes he wanted to win, but at what costs? Injuries to players, burnout etc meaning players would miss other games or be under par for more games than just this one.

I bet you Drinkwater, James, Schlupp, Mahrez and Wasyl all miraculously start on Friday.

Which means they can't be that unfit.

It sounds like we were playing it safe, to put it a nice way.

And you don't think that would be because they have had the rest that the people actually aid to monitor them decided they needed?

Posted

We now have only two full days to recover and prepare for the Sheff w game.

However, The Wednesday players have had a full week to prepare.

It's really not that complicated. But i can draw a diagram if it would help...?

Well that's miss management as well then, or complacency, I'll admit Burnley and Wigan away are ideal fixtures to have back to back in a few days but why on earth you've named a full strength side against Yeovil (when a few of them actually looked like they needed a rest) a few days before those games I don't, especially with this game coming up.

Aren't you the guy who thought QPR could catch us?

Yeh, STFU then.

Credit GTF too, turned and ran at their back 4 once or twice and looked to make things happen, which considering how slow and unagile (not a word?) he is is some going. If Nuge or Wood had ran at their back 4 like he did we'd have looked much better going forward imo.

You really have to ask yourself where they get those callers from.

Pathetic attempt at nitpicking each and every so-called "fault" today.

If you're reading this, "Matt", you're embarrassing.

I thought he raised some valid points to be fair.

Well, theoretically speaking, he is still right.

Depends on how they play on Saturday.
