MC Prussian Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 Dear oh dear neither Konchesky or Schlupp are good enougth for the premiership. We need a new left back for the premier league. I get that point, I just find your comparison with a younger Konchesky at Liverpool nothing but far-fetched.
egg_fried_rice Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 Riyad confirmed in Algeria squad. http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/Leicester-City-s-Riyad-Mahrez-confirmed-Algeria/story-21175716-detail/story.html "Riyad Mahrez will be the first Leicester City player to appear at a World Cup finals for 12 years after the Algerian squad was confirmed this morning. The winger has impressed Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic during a training camp and during his Desert Foxes debut, a 3-1 win over Armenia. The 23-year-old only emerged on Halilhodzic’s radar after joining City from Le Havre in January but he caught the eye as City marched to the Championship title. The last City player to appear in a World Cup finals was Muzzy Izzet who played for Turkey in the 2002 finals."
kingcarr21 Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 cant wait to watch Algeria now. Hopefully Mahrez gets some good game time and makes an impression
lgfualol Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 Hmm watch England or Algeria on Wednesday. Either watching paint dry, or Mahrez. I think I know which.
LeicesterBran Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 I'm glad that Riyad will be going to Brazil and hope he plays for Algeria.

Got to say well done to him, and the Algerian management for looking past his lack of top level experience and picking him on merit, never expected it.
CosbehFox Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 Judging from comments too, he's likely to get some gametime.

Spot on. A true hidden gem is such a rarity these days, and credit to their management for not holding his inauspicious past against him.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 Algeria only have 6 or 7 Algerian players in their squad. Should be called France B.
CosbehFox Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 Algeria only have 6 or 7 Algerian players in their squad. Should be called France B. Comments like this wind me up. It shows absolute zero respect or understanding of history. France ruled Algeria for years. You could say the same for Germany or Belgium or Spain or Holland. Countries which were colonial powers are bound to have 'foreigners' in their squads. Even England have a Jamaica born player in their squad and two 'foreigners' in the under 21s. It's just crass.
Ric Flair Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 He's gonna score a Baggio-esque goal I can feel it. He'll be a fcukin bargain in all the dream teams.
Brooksy Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 Good of the BBC to mention him making the cut. Crystal Palace midfielder Adlene Guedioura has been left out of Algeria's final 23-man squad for the World Cup. Tottenham's 19-year-old Nabil Bentaleb (pictured) retains his place on Vahid Halilhodzic's list for Brazil. The France-born star won his second international cap as a substitute in Algeria's 3-1 friendly win over Armenia on Saturday. Algeria will face Belgium, Russia and South Korea in Group H at the 12 June to 13 July tournament in Brazil. Striker Rafik Djebbour, who was on loan at Nottingham Forest from Olympiakos last season, also misses out on the World Cup. The other five who failed to make the squad are goalkeeper Izzedine Doukha, defender Nacereddine Khoualed and striker Foued Kadir as well as midfielders Ryad Boudebouz and Amir Karaoui. Algeria will be looking for Sporting Lisbon striker Islam Slimani to repeat his goalscoring feats from the qualifiers when he was on target five times in seven matches. The Desert Foxes failed to score a single goal in their three matches at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Algeriafan Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 Just would like to reply to Pride_Of_The_Midlands. Absolutely ludicrous comment, in my opinion (thanks for the reply Cardiff Fox). Nationality is a very personal identity. If you (I'm assuming you're English) go and live in China say, and have kids there with an English partner, are your kids Chinese/English/Both? For me, it comes down to allowing people to choose how they identify themselves. I was born in England, brought up all my life in this country, and extremely proud to be British, but I consider myself to be primarily Algerian, because that's my heritage and origins. Those Algerian players that you are calling French may have been born in France, but they have Algerian parents and that's the identity they choose to adopt. Considering some of our players could have made the France squad at some point in their careers (Taider, Ghoulam, Bentaleb, Feghouli, maybe even Mahrez (to a much lesser extent of course, but with his current trajectory, who knows)), I think it's a decision to be respected.
Algeriafan Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 And a couple of you guys are thinking of making bets on Mahrez and want some extra information. I'll try and help you guys out as much as I can, but at the moment it really is all up in the air. We have another friendly against Romania on Wednesday (our last one before the world cup, even though our federation have tried to secure a third, which might happen over the coming days). We will see the players who didn't start on Saturday play, and it will be a 4-3-3. This will be the team Vahid probably expected to be the starting line up against Belgium, but I'm sure the performances of Mahrez and Brahimi have given him food for thought. Mahrez might not even play a minute of the friendly (he definitely won't start) so it really is dependant on how his competitors perform. If I had to make a guess, I'd say Mahrez won't start the match against Belgium (I'd personally start him) but he has a chance to feature against South Korea and Russia where we will probably play a more attacking 4-2-3-1. Maybe consider betting on Algeria to progress from the groups. I'm obviously massively biased, but we really aren't as bad a team as people make out. I heard somewhere the odds were 25-1 or something crazy like that. I'll keep you guys updated with any Mahrez news coming out of the Algerian media.
ScouseFox Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 interesting stuff, i didn't think he'd be a first choice but considering he wasn't even in contention for the 30 let alone the starting XI about a month ago we can dream on here haha. can't see you chaps getting out the group but hoping for the best for our riyad, would be a dream to see him tear it up.

Brooksy Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 Who writes all this shit? I can imagine the BBC next season when we win 1-0 at Old Trafford. 'Man Utd suffer shock defeat at home to opposing blue team"

It's only ambiguous in certain cases. Wales and Ireland for example take the biscuit. It's all very well saying players might identify with a country they're not born in but we also know players will come out with bull like that so they can play at the World Cup when they don't actually identify with the country at all. I'm not picking on Algeria, pretty much every nation has had players like this I'm sure. I can imagine the BBC next season when we win 1-0 at Old Trafford. 'Man Utd suffer shock defeat at home to Leicester Tigers"
Algeriafan Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 I see where you're coming from. Yes, there may be cases when people are like "I can't make the France squad, so let's play for Algeria". In fact, it turned out that Aliadiere (remember him anyone?) had Algerian heritage and there was talk that he might play for us. I think it fell on its face because of his "France is my first choce, I'll only play for Algeria if I can't get into French squad" comments, at which point our federation refused to continue talks. It has also happened to a couple of other players. And at the end of the day, like I said, our most talented players could have made the French squad at some point in their career (I'm not saying definitely, but there's a good chance for some of them). I'm sure Feghouli would have been capped by now, Ghoulam is starting LB at Napoli at 23, Bentaleb has had a breathrough season at Spurs, keeping out the likes of Dembele and Paulinho at times, at 19. I'm certain these players chose Algeria because they identify themselves as being Algerian, otherwise, they would have waited longer before committing to one or the other.
Algeriafan Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 And, very importantly in my opinion, I've heard of the French saying we steal their players, who they spent a lot of money developing. Again, I guess I can see where they're coming from, but they have also benefited from the system in essence. Without Zidane, I'm doubtful they would have won the trophies they did (they definitely wouldn't have made the 2006 final that's for sure) so both the "strong" and "weaker" nations benefit.
MC Prussian Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 Looking at Algeria, I personally hope they've learnt their lesson and stop playing anti-football. In 2010 and under a defensive-oriented Saâdane, it was all about damage-control and not conceding. Given the current roster and first-team coach, a more attacking performance can be expected. And yes, I'd love to see Riyad shine and making his nation and club proud. Qualification to the next round is a tough ask, but a couple of good and impressive displays against South Korea and Russia and you never know... And if anything fails, at least give the other three teams a good run for the money.
Voll Blau Posted 2 June 2014 Posted 2 June 2014 Algeria only have 6 or 7 Algerian players in their squad. Should be called France B. Bet you're the same kind of utter helmet who thinks Norman Tebbit's cricket test is a viable way of determining who should live in this country.
