Schlupp and Mahrez WC

I'll be cheering on any squad that plays a Leicester player and Ivory coast if they play Sol.

I still have question marks over Schlupp as a LB at Championship level, never mind against Holland or at a WC.

Pace and strength are a big plus for a full back but he has a tendency to ball watch and lacks composure at times.

We do need a new left back next season. Schlupp is no left back especially at international or premier league standard. We do need to strengthen in this area. Ask Liverpool fans what they think of Konchesky too he was younger when he played for them in the premiership.

What does Schlupp's situation got to do with Konchesky at Liverpool some three to four years ago? :dunno:

Jeff is 21 now, Konchesky was 28/29 back then.

It's not the first time this has been brought up.

Personally, I don't see any connection whatsoever. They are two completely different people with different personas and a different career (so far).

Seems pretty harsh imo, Ghana's opposition isn't going to be the likes of Holland on a consistent basis, so to drop him on the basis of one game is pretty shit.

We all wanted him to be thrown into the lions den so let's not act surprised at the fact he got mauled.

I've only really seen Ashley Cole in his prime neutralise Robben.

They are playing Germany and Portugal in the group though.

Schlupp will come back stronger. Not many players can play LB, LWB, LM, LW, ST, CF, RW, RM and probably even  RWB and RB lol

Utility players will always be popular. Just look at Phil Jones, he' not very good but because he can play anywhere, he gets in the England squad...

EDIT: Okay, I exaggerated the point, still remains valid though!

Hi guys,

Not a Leicester City fan, but I'm Algerian and thought you guys might be interested on what some of us feel about Mahrez.

Firstly, the 23 man squad will be announced later today. I'm 100% certain Mahrez will be there, there's no way he's going to be dropped.

Thanks to Leicester City for finding this gem of a player. Such a talented player. When I first heard of him moving to Leicester and doing well, I really didn't think he was going to be an option for this World cup. For me, he was always going to be a post-world cup solution, once we've seen him play in the Premier League. I know many of you don't know any Algerian players, but we do have the likes of Boudebouz (played in the 2010 world cup at the age of 20, plays in Ligue 1 for Bastia) and Kadir (Marseille player, spent season on loan at Rennes) who were options to be in the squad ahead of Mahrez. My viewpoint changed when I finally sat down and watched a full game (I think it was against Reading). I thought he showed a technical capacity and also speed and directness that could be useful in our squad. Since then, I've been looking forward to seeing him in an Algerian shirt, and he didn't disappoint yesterday.

Will he play at the World Cup? I certainly hope so. In fact, I'd probably have him in our starting 11 in a 4-2-3-1. But I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see much of him. He's, at best, the third best attacking midfielder in the squad. Feghouli, Valencia player, is the best player in our squad and Brahimi, if anyone watched the game yesterday, is a technical genius. Mahrez would for me be third best after those two, but our manager does seem to like playing Soudani, who for me is predominantly a striker, but has actually played a lot of his club football for Dynamo Zagreb as a winger, and has always played as a winger for Algeria. Ghilas (Porto player, scored that very good goal yesterday set up by Mahrez) is also a striker who is played a lot on the wings and gives us that option. Add this to the fact that there is a big chance that we will play a 4-3-3 formation, especially against Belgium, meaning that Mahrez might struggle to get into the team unfortunately. Hoping it's not the case though, because he adds an extra dimension to our attack.

Gutted for Schlupp, but from where he was the start of the year he must have been pleased to even get in the provisional squad.

I think we all know he's got a lot of work to do at LB and this experience against Robben may well be the (harsh) learning curve that he needed to step it up even more at LB and try and become an even better player than we already have there. With the help of Konchesky, and Pearson, in training I seriously think he can keep becoming a better LB.

Cheers mate. It's nice to hear that Mahrez is impressing on international level. Been great whilst he's been here and he seems to be progressing at a great rate. Personally, even if he only gets a couple of sub appearances I'll be happy for him, great experience, and even more so if he can impress further. Good luck in the World Cup, hopefully Mahrez can take you far

I watched the first half last night and really felt for Schlupp. That Ghana side was woeful. The LCB put Bamba to shame in terms of how erratic he was and I don't think the LM was even there most the time, leaving Schlupp isolated. Ghana were very unorganised. From goal kicks, Schlupp was having to come centrally to attack headers that the CB should be dealing with. The abuse he's received on twitter is ridiculous, Ghana have much larger issues than Schlupp.

Not going to say "not fair" or anything because I know nothing about Ghana and their squad but it must be gutting to get initially selected then not make it. The World Cup is the greatest stage, we all dream of playing their and to get half way (in a sense) must be tough but that's football, that's life, and he can do nothing apart from get up and prove them wrong with a good season in the top flight!

I'm not sure Schlupp was ever in the 23, barring any injuries. I know squad numbers don't always matter but he did wear number 25 last night which suggests to me he was on standby.

Looking forward to seeing Mahrez play in Brazil.

Bit off topic as its not the world cup, but Liam Moore playing in a 3rd place playoff for England now against Portugal. From England's point of view we look pretty average but Moore is absolutely dominating Portugals attack (so far), will be interesting to see how he fares for the rest of the game
