Finnegan Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 Much rather we sign a promising twenty one year old that's played a bit of Prem football (especially given our record of signing players about that age) than a 28/29 year old Championship footballer.
sphericalfox Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 He hasn't been consistent for Sunderland, although he had a purple patch at the end of last season. Not totally convinced he would be right for us, but that is merely my opinion. He's been on loan, and is well down the pecking order.

I don't have the time nor the inclination to watch every player at every other club, nor do I play Fifa and have the expertise this brings. But, my unqualified opinion is that you are probably right.
TheUltimateWinner Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 Bit of a risk I think. The goalscoring run that Wickham was on towards Sunderland's revival last season might have been a flash in a pan. And is he better than what we have already? Probably not. Best that he stays up north. The fact he had that run proves he has that quality about him, it's just down to the manager to make sure he keeps that level of form. I believe if we signed him Nigel could get the best out of him.
Mike Oxlong Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 Much rather we sign a promising twenty one year old that's played a bit of Prem football (especially given our record of signing players about that age) than a 28/29 year old Championship footballer. Even if his middle name is Ralph?
eye666 Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 He hasn't been consistent for Sunderland, although he had a purple patch at the end of last season. Not totally convinced he would be right for us, but that is merely my opinion. He's still only 21. The fact he came back and scored nearly a goal a game (including goals against Man City and Chelsea if I'm not mistaken) shows that he has something about him. Would be excited if he came here to be truthful, and would be a bargain consdering the £7-10m quoted for Ulloa. Younger, higher sell-on value, Prem experience, potential future England striker... can't see any negatives about this deal should he sign.
RedSoxUK Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 Don't need him - we have Chris Wood. Though i'm sure he's going to progressand be a brilliant player in the next few years.
chapero82 Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 Everybody keeps going about Chris wood like he's the saviour I honestly don't think he's that good
Carlos88LCFC Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 Well I have a $5000 bet with my work friend that we stay up this season. I hope we get someone in quick! Being linked with everyone and not actually paying any money for anyone after raving on about how much money we are going to spend is getting me grief at work ! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Everybody keeps going about Chris wood like he's the saviour I honestly don't think he's that good It's not that he's the saviour, more so.. he has the same style / age / height / and general charachteristics as Wickham, and Wood also has some prem experience, just not as much as Wickham - who's to say Chris Wood can't step up and fulfil that role, when it's taken Wickham millions of pounds and some frustrated Sunderland games. But if Nige thinks he can repeat his final form from the start of next season with consistency, then at his age 5m is a steal
Guest Col city fan Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 I think someone hit the nail on the head the other day. We will most probably be one of the favourites for relegation. Whatever people may FEEL (hope?) our chances are, I think that will be the reality. This won't of course, imply that we will go down but that, via bookmaker analysis (and let's have it right, they've got nearly everything right in this world cup) we will have a fight on our hands to stave off relegation. Therefore, we will not be attracting many bigger names to the club, plus i don't think that's the Pearson way. The Leicester City way may well have to be signing potential like Wickham in the hope that he (and others) may fulfill it. I have no qualms with signing a player like Wickham. He's big and strong, gives us another option and played for a team towards the end of last season who performed marvels to stay in the Prem. But the price must be right. For me, that price would be 4-5 million tops. Any more than that and it starts to get risky. The club will not want to pay over the odds for a player who could do well but, just as easily, couldn't. IMO.
Callabinho Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 Several good points made, in my opinion Wickham would be a gamble worth taking, this kid still well thought of and when you look at him it's hard to think he's only 21. He has everything in terms of ability, pace, height, strength and he can finish, it's getting it out of players like that and obviously Nigel feels he and his staff can do so. I'd sooner spend £4-5 million on him than over the odds on Ulloa, simple fact Wickham has premier league experience, brief but experience non the less. Anyway it seems as though Nigel is in the market for two attacking players, I don't think he would be looking at Campbell or Ulloa, more like both?
paddy Agyemang Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 Would love Wickham and Frazier Campbell partnership but ill be just as happy with Wickham and Vardy

I do think some thing has happened between Wood and NP though. Think a reasonable bid would see wood gone if we got Wickham in.

kingfox Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 As someone says on page 1 Sunderland fans saying he has been told sign the new contract or leave now. If true and a new contract has been on the table for a while and he won't sign it they want some money now than wait a year and get fvck all. Every reason for them to sell 5 or 6m from us now is better than fvck all next summer and they save a wage for the season. Plus they can fill his place with someone committed to the long term instead of a player waiting to fvck off. As for Deeny McCormack and Ulloa he has kicked a ball in the prem and yes only five or six games at the end of the season. When he was a major part of them staying up with his form. Every transfer is a gamble but would rather we spent 6 or 7m on him than gamble 10m on ulloa or the same on the other two that have not kicked a ball in the prem. A little surge at the end of last season, makes all the difference then? I'm sure before last season, people were looking at him, and were calling him overrated. But no point going on about it, until something more comes to fruition. The Daily Mail, linked us with Pelle nothing came of that, they linked us with Movsisyan nothing on that, now with Wickham and it only says considering a bid. Majority of players we have been linked with may not even be on our radar.
LeicesterBran Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 I'd happily take him as he is young and can only get better. A strikeforce of Wickham and Vardy would be nice.

If you'd signed Wickham for 50p & he'd scored 40 goals in a season for a Dutch 2nd division team on Football Manager, you'd be going nuts.
Dan Posted 5 July 2014 Posted 5 July 2014 Everybody keeps going about Chris wood like he's the saviour I honestly don't think he's that good It's been clear for a good year that he's far from a saviour. If anything he held us back.
