pazzerfox Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 Surely the managemant team know best. The fact that we are after a target man say's that Nigel obviously Nigel doesn't think Chris Wood can cut it in the Premiership, as did WBA, who were happy to let him go.
Candidcamera Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 Give Chris Wood a chance - look at what Vardy did last year. He's still young and he wants to do well. That is similar to Nugent and not many wanting to replace him. Unless you can get better leave well alone.

Or he wants all positions covered back up wise, lose wood without any other big striker in the squad and you end up with no plan B. Same with Vardy and Campbell, fairly similar styles. Wouldn't be shocked if their thinking was along these lines... Vardy / Campbell - Quick strikers who press from the front with lots of energy Wood / Ulloa or Wickham - Big striker with physical presence Nugent / GTF - Play off the striker
Fox Ulike Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 Did Wickham spend 25k on one bottle or a few?? http://www.dailystar.co.uk/showbiz/386716/Sunderland-footballer-Connor-Wickham-racks-up-massive-bill-at-Marbella-bar I wasn't there.... but apparently he "splurged" £17.5k on a single bottle. Do we want splurgers at our Football Club?
TrentFox Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 I have to admit I don't normally allow myself to be influenced by the Daily Star, but the recent story about Wickham "splashing" £25k on champagne has got me a little bit worried. Think I'd prefer to keep Chris Wood than risk signing Wickham. Mr Wickham: Boozey Chris Wood: Choir boy What if he was there with a group of friends and happily covered their excesses from his own pocket but only had a couple of swigs , one of which some sleazy journo had been poised, finger on camera button, for hours waiting to snap ? Still feel so sure about buying into their version of events ? Just a thought.

TrentFox Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 Perhaps he did. Or maybe he asked another man to just pour it over his face...? Maybe. Who knows. God forbid that, having just pulled Sunderland out of the mire, he dared to actually have a few moments of enjoying himself during the summer. Ignoring the tabloid spin, just ask yourself independently of anyone else's version, does it really shock you or bother you that a young lad had champagne poured over his face? Or drank some? He will be as fit as a fiddle come August 16th. Not having. Go at you, but it just sums up how sensationalist the press like to be and how readily we allow then to sell their non-stories to us. I'd bet almost every footballer in England did something similar at some point this summer. Most were fortunate enough not to be photographed or did it with a tad more discretion.
Stadt Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 If Pearson wants to sign him he'll meet him pearsonally and judge his character from that rather than a daily mirror article.
MPH Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 I have no problem hith Connor Wickham when on holiday, after the season has ended, Spending whatever he wants on whatever he wants and partying to whatever time he wants.
Babylon Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 Him spending that much is about like me spending £250 on one night...
Dan Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 He's a young footballer, absolutely loaded and it's during pre-season. It's not really a big story and not enough to put me off wanting us to sign him. The last thing we want are dodgy characters with shite attitudes but doing that doesn't make him one.
Guest Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 Him spending that much is about like me spending £250 on one night... We don't want your sort round 'ere Babs!

I doubt "almost every footballer in England" asked another man to tip Champagne over their own face during the Summer. I bet Chris Wood didn't. I bet Lloyd Dyer didn't. Anyway. It's beside the point. No it doesn't 'shock me' or 'bother me'. Maybe you're right. But I wouldn't take the risk of spending big money on a player whose drinking exploits make it into the tabloids. That is all. It's fairly easy for young players to become more enamoured of the football 'lifestyle' than football itself. Just ignoring the warning signs as "tabloid spin" seems naïve to me. Plenty of players have fallen by the wayside like this.
Thracian Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 It's his money - and for him to do what he chooses with it. Footballer lets his hair down in close season! Good luck to him. Plenty of footballers have not fallen by the wayside despite having fun, and others have fallen out of sight for entirely different reasons. This event will quite probably have nothing to do with Wickham's ability and commitment to football. The game's never demanded that players follow a path towards sainthood!

Jon the Hat Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 It's his money - and for him to do what he chooses with it. Footballer lets his hair down in close season! Good luck to him. Better to drink it than gamble it. You know when you open that bottle the money is gone.
Alf Bentley Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 If Pearson wants to sign him he'll meet him pearsonally and judge his character from that rather than a daily mirror article. "He'll meet him pearsonally"? Is that a euphemism for a headbutt?
NewquayFox Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 That Lewis Hamilton is a right so and so too, he wastes champagne you know... ;0)
Jace Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 I'm not a professional athelete myself but I'd feel much fresher and fitter on holiday after a few bottles of Ace of Spades rather than 30 pints of lager and several floor cleaner vodka substitute fish bowls
Socks Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 Come on now lets not have double standards I'm pretty sure if you were a young lad earning a small fortune, playing football all season im pretty sure you'd be on a Tropical beach downing expensive champagne.... I know i would be... Beats 2 weeks in Margate anyday
Stadt Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 "He'll meet him pearsonally"? Is that a euphemism for a headbutt? Not quite, I mentioned people should say "pearsonally" more often a few months back

I'm surprised that no-one else is even slightly concerned about the prospect of us bidding £5m on this guy whilst he's in the tabloids for boozing. But OK maybe times have changed. Next time I'm down my local I'll ask the barman to pour my half of stout into my mouth from an over-sized novelty bottle.
Babylon Posted 7 July 2014 Posted 7 July 2014 I'm surprised that no-one else is even slightly concerned about the prospect of us bidding £5m on this guy whilst he's in the tabloids for boozing. I'm not worried, because quite frankly I've done more stupid stuff than spunk a weeks wages on a bottle of champagne before. That's not a reflection on who I am as a person though, just that when you are young, have a bit of spare cash and on holiday with your mates you do some stuff that you might not normally do.
