Connor Wickham

Stop saying we. You mean you are uncertain. I'd say that Wickham can deliver as well as Vardy as he did so at Weds, basically saving them from relegation, and the same for Sunderland.

Ulloa and Cardoza haven't played in the Premiership. Your logic is flawed. Put the spade down and step out of the hole.

Whoever we sign, may not well have played Premier League football.

It's all about risk, it will either pay off or backfire.

And with history of other clubs recently & ourselves in the past, I'll never be confident.

I bet Norwich fans were sitting on their forum this time last season, dribbling over Van Wolfswinkel, like most of you are dribbling over Wickham now.

What I never get is, the over confidence fans have, then if signings go tits up, they are quick to cry about it & moan. I've learnt by now, stay neutral, until they actually deliver for us.

You suggested signing Assombalonga in another thread, who hasn't played above League One.

I don't know why you're complaining about us going for a player who has proven himself in the Championship and has started to in the Premier League.

A Premier League defence, which could well have 2 new signings in it.

Also that match against Sheff Wed, Wasilewski was shocking that day, while Miquel isn't our player anymore, Wickham troubled Wasilewski especially, and tbh I don't think Wasilewski will start many games next season.

We need to concentrate on signing a new centre back to partner Wes, or introduce Liam Moore into the starting 11 again, as he is our future, & deserves to show his promise at Premier League level.

Haven't we signed Upson?

This will not happen, if we cant afford Frazer cambells wages i highly doubt we're going to be able to afford this guys.

Maybe we don't WANT to pay Campbell's wages, but Pearson might be prepared to stump up the same (or more) for someone he really wants (ie Wickham). I think Campbell was always seen as the option if Nuge didn't sign his contract extension. IF Nuge has signed, Campbell is not needed - Wickham probably is.

Am i the only one thats not at all inspired by this? If he was that good then why would Sunderland let him go.

I agree. He was so important to them staying up last season that you would think they would be desperate to keep him. Why would they be willing to sell?

Who said they are willing to sell? He has one year left on his contract and we (if a bid has been made) are testing Sunderland's resolve.

If he doesn't sign a new contract he could go for nothing next year.

So they don't lose him for free next season. If he plays well next season and really proves himself he's free to move wherever he pleases with nothing gained on behalf of Sunderland. It's much better to cash in now and put it towards a new striker than lose out next season.

I didn't think Sunderland want to sell him, they want him to sign another contract or go! They're just playing hardball with him, and that could backfire on them. He'll get plenty of game time with us though. I would love to see him here.

If we can get him for the same or even less than we offered for Ulloa, then he would be a cracking signing. But if Sunderland want their £10m they paid for him back, tell 'em where to go nige.

I know he's still young but people seem to be getting over excited because he had a handful of good games at the end of the season. Other than that he's always seemed overrated

Would be a decent signing, I only remember him being good in the championship though.

Funny, I remember him being pivotal in keeping Sunderland up last season. Would take him in a heartbeat.

As I say I'm all for this signing but some people seem to be caught up in a handful of games. As others say it might have just been a hot streak but I also ask those people.. What if it wasn't and that's the potential he possesses? Say we do wait a year to see how he performs, he could flop and we dodge a bullet but he could live up to the hype of a few years back and bigger clubs come in for him. How many of you knocking him now will then moan that we missed out when we had the chance?

All hypothetical of course, we don't even know if he's available

Usually I wouldn't allow myself to be drawn into a few excellent games because, as people have said, it could well be a flash in the pan.

The difference here is that he's only 21.

Surely if he's capable of doing what he's done at his age he's capable of doing something approaching that later in his career? Players tend to move forwards going into their twenties and I'd trust the management team to get him performing at something like that level more consistently. I'd view it differently if he was a few years older.

And any young striker we get in will have his development helped by Super Kev.

Seriously don't know why people are getting excited about this. Firstly why would Sunderland sell, if anything they will hold out for another year or he will sign a new contract, their is no need to leave unless he himself demands a move.

Also what has he done in the Premier League? He had a good run at the end of last season, apart from that when given the chance he hasn't delivered that's why Sunderland sent him out on loan in the first place. For me he needs a full season with Sunderland under his belt, 10 or so games at the end of a season is nothing, many strikers can hit a hot streak. Is a player who has hardly been given a full chance to show his capabilities in the Premier League, worth the risk of signing?

Yes he did incredibly well at Sheffield Wednesday last season, but that was at Championship level, he made his name in the first place, at Championship level.

I seriously think Wickham needs to prove himself, for a full season with Sunderland, before we go splashing the cash on him, and by then he may well sign a new contract with them, and if that's the case then so be it, plenty more fish in the sea.

You seem confused, rubbishing his premiership credentials AND rubbishing the chances of Sunderland selling him. Someone pass me a drink!

I have not had any alcohol for over six months but I am tempted now. :D

Why do Sunderland need to sell?

And what has he done in the Premier League, that has been so impressive? Yet again people on here think he would be a terrific signing, oh I don't want Campbell, McCormack or Deeney, yet I'd take Wickham hardly a difference.

As someone says on page 1 Sunderland fans saying he has been told sign the new contract or leave now.

If true and a new contract has been on the table for a while and he won't sign it they want some money now than wait a year and get fvck all.

Every reason for them to sell 5 or 6m from us now is better than fvck all next summer and they save a wage for the season.

Plus they can fill his place with someone committed to the long term instead of a player waiting to fvck off.

As for Deeny McCormack and Ulloa he has kicked a ball in the prem and yes only five or six games at the end of the season.

When he was a major part of them staying up with his form.

Every transfer is a gamble but would rather we spent 6 or 7m on him than gamble 10m on ulloa or the same on the other two that have not kicked a ball in the prem.

Bit of a risk I think. The goalscoring run that Wickham was on towards Sunderland's revival last season might have been a flash in a pan.

And is he better than what we have already? Probably not. Best that he stays up north.

He hasn't been consistent for Sunderland, although he had a purple patch at the end of last season. Not totally convinced he would be right for us, but that is merely my opinion.
