To only score 5 against san marino is pretty embarrassing in my opinion. We scored 5 against man united. England's players earn millions and play in the best league in the world. They were playing against amateurs. Not being funny but it should be 10-0 at minimum. Why play with 4 defenders against them. You only need 2.

We're far from "shit", it was always a tough ask for Petkovic continuing where Hitzfeld had left off. Taking over right before the start of a new qualification campaign, intending on imposing your new style of play instantly, with little preparation and no real friendlies in between (you can blame the Swiss Football Association for that) and you've set yourself up for a rocky road.

It was actually an entertaining game last night in Maribor, with most chances on our side. Still, it became crystal-clear the longer the game went on that our strikers are in pretty bad shape right now. Seferovic and Drmic in particular wouldn't be able to put it past an open barn door in national colours at the moment.

A positive indication is that Petkovic has now gone from an adventurous 4-3-3 to more of a 4-3-1-2, with Shaqiri acting as the CF in the middle. This works pretty well. There are signs of improvement, players like Rodriguez are in the midst of a great form curve but we're not there yet as a group. San Marino up next and you know we'll come back and beat them comfortably... by a score of 2-1 or 3-1.

I didn't even watch last nights game. The whole thing bores me to tears. Let's get this fiasco over and get back to the real football. Is it me or have there been far too many 'international breaks' already this season? A couple of games and then, another bloody international game.....

There are two more teams competing during the Euro 2016 qualification campaign - hence increasing the overall schedule. Could be one reason. But in general, it's always been like this. It might look a lot due to the amount of televised games nowadays.

Agree with Townsend about the negative set-up of San Marino, you'd think with their resources and ability they'd be able to actually have a go.

I was having this discussion at home. They know they are going to get hammered 7/8 most games so what's the point in defending? Why don't they go out with a more attacking line up and try and score 1 or 2?

What is deamed an unacceptable loss when you are the manager of San Marino? Surely 10-1 is better than 8-0 when you realistically have fk all to play for

Do you think with the limited, part time players that they have they could score anything other than a flukey goal against us?

Not necessarily. They had a free kick at the half way line last night and still had 5 players behind the ball. If they know there going to lose anyway why not have every player in the box and lump the ball in.There would be nothing flukey of them scoring if they managed a scrappy goal from this set up. Give there fans something to celebrate and a San Marino player something he could cherish like scoring at Wembley. As Bergamo said surely they would rather lose 10-1 and actually have something to celebrate rather than a heavy defeat with absolutely no reply.

Last night i was even wanting there keeper to save Rooneys penalty. That would of been something the Keeper could of cherished and told his grand kids about

If he hasn't got a still of that save from Welbeck last night moments before the pen, hanging up in his house already I'd be shocked. That should stick with him.

I think Tahiti have it right, they generally play 4 4 2 and look to counter at every opportunity. They were unlucky not to bag against Spain in the confeds last year. Had a lot of respect for them.

You only have to look at FA cup upsets to see that sometimes these things happen.

I think it's irrelevant if they scored a flukey goal or not, if in the whole match you don't get close to the opposition penalty area you won't even manage an attempt let alone a flukey goal.

If San Marino attacked, maybe once in 200 matches would they get lucky and grab a win which would still be an improvement on their existing competitive record.

Exactly, even counter for 45 mins and then when they are shattered sit back, anything but the flat back 7 they had last night.

Also it would make betting a lot easier as they'd lose 8/9/10-0 instead of 4/5-0. That's probably why I have more respect for Tahiti, they make seemingly obvious betting outcomes a lot more likely to happen.

Like you say though, they would spring the odd surprise. Whether it be by catching a team on an off day and getting a result or even scoring a goal or two.

If San Marino attacked they would concede 10+ on a regular basis. They average around 4 conceded a game.

Tahiti had a good go in the confederations but they were a far better side than San Marino.

A guy on the radio said that playing Germany, Spain, Holland, France even England is the best they can hope for, we can still qualify and have a major tournament. For two games every couple of years, is it such a bad thing? Football is more than just the elite after all.

I do think playing a mini-tournament when the Euros are on between the minnows will give them competitive games and a bit of confidence.

Which basically backs my point up, conceeding 4 a game is shocking so why not try to score a bloody goal!!
