Euro 2016 Qualifying

People moan about this every year.

It's not broke, leave it as it is. This is qualifying, there'll be some shit teams. Get over it.

It's an opportunity for them to generate extra revenue and their fans to get to watch the big teams.

Surprised there hasn't been more applauds to Norn Iron whose achievements outweigh Wales for mine (aware it's been a long wait for Wales but the pool is smaller; even more so now ROI can pick the best off them).

Yes fair play to them, got to laugh at those on here who pointed out the failings of Ranieri at Greece yet seemed happy if we had gone with Hiddink.

In fairness, even as someone who didn't want Hiddink the blame isn't completely on him. Most of the players had reached their peak in the WC and have gone to pot since, since Van Persie fell off the mark they've literally got no strikers.

Why?

Bet San Marino players are quite numb knowing they'll get beat by a few everytime.

It has actually been suggested last year by some ITV commentator.

I don't think having a tiered system is bad, but the winner of it qualifying? That's rewarding failure and San Marino (well we'll say Liechtenstein) qualifying for a tournament is along similar lines to West Ham qualifying for the Europa League.

This.

Hence editted original post to try and state this (albeit rather badly!).

Ah! Sorry. I can see your point, although I wonder what the others should do in that time.

If I was an amateur footballer from San Marino I'd ****ing love the chance to play Ronaldo or Rooney or Ibra. Why not? I'd much rather run out and get stuffed by Spain or Italy than lose a qualifier nobody watches against Lichtenstein or Moldova.

Holland lol

I remember when people were shocked at a World Cup without Holland in 2002 when they finished behind Portugal and Ireland in those qualifiers.

How on earth have they managed to (potentialy) screw up qualification for an expanded Euros?

I'm not sure but people are exaggerating their fall from grace.

They had a shocking Euro 2012 and their semi-final appearance last year was rather flattering. Their performance against Spain was superb but I was not impressed with them after that. In the knockout stages they were fortunate to say the least, getting a dodgy penalty to beat Mexico and beating Costa Rica on spot kicks after a 0-0 bore draw where they barely threatened. It was much the same story against Argentina. They also struggled to beat Australia in the group and Brazil were shambles when they eased past them for the 3rd place match.

Van Gaal was overrated then and he's overrated now. They should still be qualifying easily, maybe they're relying on too many has beens.

In fairness, the team they currently have is far inferior to the one they had then and the group is quite tough. But that doesn't excuse them one bit. They have to hope that Iceland and the Czechs turn up in their games against Turkey despite already having secured their tickets.

When you have Jeff Bruma at centre back, failure should be the expectation.

Have Serbia taken over the football world yet like you predicted 5 years ago?

No.

Have Liverpool taken over the football world like you predicted 2 years ago just before Gerrard's slip?

And they still look unbelievably ordinary every time I watch them play.

Yeah they look neat without actually doing anything.

There's no way that a side worth about 300m should be struggling to beat Cyprus.

Cheering on for Northern Ireland and Albania tonight.

Denmark again failed to score for the second time running, earning themselves another goalless draw and are now in real danger of losing second place.

However, Albania are playing leaders Portugal at home, so that might change for the better for the Boldspil Union once more.

Would love Northern Ireland to qualify even despite Kyle Lafferty being a prize scrot.

No.
