Transfer policy what's the problem?

Recommended Posts

In Southampton's first season back in the premiership they signed 9 new players including two who cost £20 million between them.

In their second season they only signed 3 players but cost a total of £36 million.

So if you want to sustain their status like Southampton it looks like we'll have to spend money.

They also ended up with huge debts, with £30+ million still owed at the beginning of this season on previous transfers. Hence the fire sale.

I thought the "fire sale" was down to the woman owner not actually being bothered about football and more interested in taking the money from player sales.

Must admit, as patient as I have been and ad supportive as I am of dear NigE, I have been left to feel very frustrated at how this transfer window has gone.

it's very clear that Nigel has very little say on the transfer deals. he makes sure he identifies his target minutes and it's left to someone else to clinch the deal.

that someone else Clearly has a directive to spend As little as possible and to save money whenever he can.

now don't get me wrong I don't want us to go bankrupt but I wish we would stop farting about and finalize some deals. if they can't be done then let's move on to some other ones.

I trust that you aren't going to games this season then, given that you can predict the future?

Southampton and Swansea are the example of who we should be following. They rose through the leagues, and have sustained their status without buying a new squad every season.

We finished with 100+ points last season. We just got a good draw with a weakened team against Everton. We have played just one game so far. Fans like you don't deserve to be in the Premiership.

Let's see how the season unfolds before you shout down the players we currently have as shit.

Get a grip, you joyless c*nt.

"Fans like you don't deserve to be in the Premiership" followed by "Get a grip, you joyless c*nt". Thats ironic.

Keyboard warriors like you need banning from this forum. The man is entitled to his opinion, as are you but to stoop so low as to call somebody THAT for having a different opinion is a shambles. Grow up!

I'm no keyboard warrior. He posted in an a aggressive tone and insulted those who didn't agree with him, as highlighted by the poster above when he tried to take the moral high ground as he replied to me.

I just think some 'fans' need to shut up and stop spreading negativity about the squad we already have. Be constructive and have some faith that we are going about business the right way.

We've spent 8m on one player who has scored on his debut. We've added 3 others who have yet to play. This is already to a title winning squad.

We might not have tied up the Cambiasso deal and Fanni deal, but that doesn't mean our policy on buying new players is wrong. You don't know what their demands are. Why would Fanni deserve a higher wage than RDL who has been outstanding for us? Would you be happy, or think the squad would be happy if Cambiasso asked for wages which might be twice that of Drinkwater?

People are quick to lambast players for being paid too much and having no loyalty to their team. Well we seem to have a likeable bunch who want to play for Leicester, yet if some fans had their way half of them would be relegated to 3rd/4th choice in the squad and not given a season in this league - in favour of a load of foreign mercenaries.

True, if we have a great season, then some players will have their heads turned by bigger clubs. But that's the nature of the beast.

There is no need to expect instant success in the transfer market or on the pitch. Give the manager and the players a season at least. If we get relegated, it's not the end of the world. At least we didn't sell our ethics to do so and instead we leave ourselves in a great position to bounce back.

Everyone calm the **** down, stop moaning before a ball has barely been kicked, be patient and enjoy the ride.

Over a year ago, in July 2013, the club announced the appointment of a Director of Football. His name is Terry Robinson. This move and Robinson's duties have been reported and discussed on here a couple of times and it has been clear ever since that it is Robinson who is predominantly responsible for finalizing transfer deals:

http://www.lcfc.com/news/article/050713-lcfc-announces-new-appointment-896798.aspx

Either you've been living under a rock for 13 months or you're deliberately oblivious.

Players signed under Robinson:

  • Dean Hammond (August 2013)
  • Marcin Wasilewski (September 2013)
  • Gary Taylor-Fletcher (September 2013)
  • Riyad Mahrez (January 2014)
  • Kevin Phillips (January 2014)
  • Matthew Upson (May 2014)
  • Marc Albrighton (May 2014)
  • Ben Hamer (May 2014)
  • Leonardo Ulloa (July 2014)

Now please tell me those weren't shrewd moves leaving a positive mark behind at one point or another (sauf Upson, Hamer and Albrighton who all have yet to play). Personally, I wish some fans weren't so bloody impatient when it comes to our present (and future) transfer policy. The majority of players added in recent times have contributed (massively) to our success story and helped us to get where we are right now. As long as this transfer policy and the decisions continue to be so fruitful, I see no point in criticizing the club so quickly.

EDIT: Sorry in advance for appearing a bit snotty with this post. I just think a year is long enough to adapt to the new ramifications.

You make a good argument. Might it also be reasoned to look at the signings under NP pre TR:

Drinkwater

Morgan

De Leat

James

Vardy

Knockheart

More important to our success you could argue? Both perspectives have merit. But mine is that there is an issue with have we approached signings. We have missed out on targets for whatever reason, the Cambiasso signing is becoming a farce - the apparent slimani deal drags on. Fanni was here for less than 48 hours before going home. Time is running out and even the most loyal must realise that GTF and Hammond (as good as he was last sat) cannot produce week in week out.

this is a good post, we went down the buy a squad route with Sven and look where that went. We have a good bunch, no overpaid prima donnas and a good spirit in the squad. Nigel has proved shrewd in his purchases and so may it continue.

Fanni came for 2 days, we didn't want him. Pearson will only sign players that benefit the squad. Fanni may be an excellent player or he may be gash, but if signing him causes imbalance in the squad and upsets the dressing room then Pearson does not want him.

Our greatest asset at the moment is team spirit not individual brilliance. We can't risk ruining that by panic buying.

Agreed, especially as there really is no need to panic.

I can see why you would say this and until the last few weeks I was of the same opinion. But I don't buy into this no need to panic buy mentality people keep quoting.

We were promoted with a number of games still to go, we have had a huge amount of time to prepare and plan our targets. Some will/won't come off but I expected more than what we have, for now we can write off 50% of our summer signings as one is injured and one is unlikely to play any time soon. Whilst Albrighton and Ulloa are good signings it's not enough, and whilst I agree team spirit and togetherness are really important, there is no hiding from the fact that our back up players do not add the depth should we get injuries. One of the main reasons we won the league season is the fact that we were very fortunate with injuries.

Spot on!!... Fact is the few days left before the window closes will define our season!.. And the way it's looking I cannot see us buying in the players we need to survive this division... Many of you have ostrichitis!!!

I'm not debating the fact that we had quite a decent transfer history under Pearson before Robinson came along. What I'm trying to say is that some fans cannot imagine what the process is like with regards to transfer dealings and details.

We do possess quite an impatient fraction amongst our fanbase. The transfer window's still open for another ten days - looking back, it's not like we haven't done zilch in terms of acquisitions and I'm sure the club and the manager are more than aware of the need for more signings. It's always best to remember that we're hardly ever the only party involved in transfer talks.

Let's see how things have panned out at the start of September, shall we?

There seems to be some dominant theory on this forum that if a player comes in on more money than the rest of the squad then our much vaunted team spirit will disappear faster than spit on an iron. Do people think that all our players are on exactly the same wage? If someone is paid more do the other plays sulk and refuse to train? not talk to this player on a few grand more? Would this individuals ability to buy a new sports car a whole week ahead of the others mean they no longer enjoy playing for us? Was it the varying wages that were to blame for the apparent lack of togetherness in svens team or was it actually down to the fact that a number of the players were just obnoxious twats to be around? I assume that man utds current troubles are probably down to the unrest that danny welbeck is causing due to being paid significantly less than Rooney, or maybe it's just that man utd are generally a bit average now.

The fanni came and we didnt want him because of wages etc theory, is no different imo, to the endless rumours of why Cambiasso hasnt signed. Nobody knows. Just speculation.

Could be linked with rumours that Cambiasso is trying to get Alvarez in on the deal and the club in their desperation to persuade Cambiasso to sign, got rid. Too much money wanted is always going to be a reason most fans will resonate with.

Quite. Ive heard that Richard Branson is worth 900m and sir Alan Sugar 850m. But i bet you Sir Alan is just as happy as Richard. ; )

Make of it what you will, but just went over to Cambiasso thread and there is a link to an Italian paper saying he has signed a two year deal, and has been encouraging the club to also sign Paul Alvarez.

Thpugh could be utter bs. Does bear out a little about the faani deal.

EDIT: Sorry in advance for appearing a bit snotty with this post. I just think a year is long enough to adapt to the new ramifications.

You need to add Kasper Schmeichel & David Nugent to list of players signed, they were technically free agents and could go anywhere but they committed themselves to the club.

What would we have to spent to get a goalie in as good as Kasper - £5 or £6 million? or spend to get a 20 goal a season champions striker to replace Nugent £8 - £12 million?

These two are overlooked because they was at the club last season, but I feel they should be included in out list of signings

Plus long term deals for Wes Morgan, Danny Drinkwater, Matty James, Jamie Vardy, Jeff schlupp, Liam Moore.

You have to remember the vast majority of transfer are like selling houses and many deals are in chains.

Example: Fellini to utd lead to Everton buying McCarthy from Wigan,

Given how the transfer window works in the final few days, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we bring in up to 4 players either permanent or on loan, tighten your belts as it could be an exciting deadline day for our club.

I think the point is we don't need to buy the players we need to survive this season. We already have them. Our best starting 11, I personally think have more than enough to survive within this division. The point is that when injuries have appeared our squad looks thin, I think there is more than enough time to bring in the required quality of back up, even three days before the window closes it will only be a case of a back up player.

I also think that the closer we get to the window closing players will be more aware of their position within their current clubs, and those that don't feel they are going to feature or have been told they can leave, will be pushing agents to get moves arranged, might be easier to negotiate with over personal terms as they might be eager to move, and clubs might be more inclined to push through deals to free up space in their squads.

According to today’s edition of L’Equipe, Rod Fanni’s move to Leicester failed simply because he did not impress during his two day trial period.

According to the paper, he lack aggressiveness and intensity. The deal did not fall through because of issues with wages.
