Conspiracy theory - is everyone now on a big bonus to stay up?

Gary Lineker said to the panel on MOTD, "where have those two Leicester wins suddenly come from?"

And it got me thinking. I wonder if our Billionaire owners recently have offered Nigel, his staff and the players an additional big fat bonus if we stay up? Could explain our sudden upturn in performance and results? Or is it just coincidence that they're putting in the extra 10%?

Just a thought...

I wasn't that surprised by either of them. We've lost games by fine margins when playing well, this time we won them by fine margins when playing well. Just a case of things going for us this time.

What Webbo said.

We've just been slightly more fortuitous than we have been in previous games, which could well be down to the level of opposition. An average spurs team edges us out one week, a poor West Ham/Bromwich side gets edged by us the two weeks following.

Let's hope Swansea are in a generous mood come Saturday, as the margins will no doubt be tight again.

They were on one anyway. This is one thing I'm actually ITK on.

I'm sure they are already on some sort of staying up bonus anyway. I just wondered if the owners have added some sort of 'extra incentive' for everyone recently seeing as the financial stakes are so high? Or maybe it's just the tactical brilliance of NP lol

Well whatever has caused it it definitely isn't the managers doing.

lol. That was my thinking!!!

The way we started both games was poor and we could have been out of each game by half time. So that doesn't support your theory. What we really need is to start games at the same tempo as we finish.

We started like a train against West Ham. Could've been 2-0 up after 10 mins had Nugent stuck away the peno.

Must have been Pearsons 'Churchilan' half time team talks that made the difference then I guess!

I'm probably the only one on here that thinks this but we have played well for a few weeks now and these two wins are not really surprising for me - although the last minute winners are enthralling nevertheless. Since the Palace game at home we have more or less dominated a lot of the games, apart from Hull, but the oppositions quality coupled with our lack of quality has really hurt us. In the last two games we have taken more chances, and even started to score some scrappy goals. That has been the difference for me. Not really playing better in general terms, because we have played well for so many games for me, but now we are starting to take our chances.

You're absolutely right Shailen, you probably are the only one on here that thinks this :)

A bit harsh on our players' characters, one thing which hasn't really been in doubt this season on the whole.

I've seen plenty of posts on here this season questioning the players character. See the 'Are we too nice as a team' thread as an example

We've played that way for a large amount of the season, just in other games that late minute Vardy winner was a morgan own goal etc....

Not sure a bit of extra cash will be such a motivating factor. You have to remember these chaps are rather well off in the first place.

I am with you.   have watched every match, and as I see it, there are 4 home games that are the difference, where we just played poorly and should have taken at least 6 points from these:

  • City 0, WBA 1
  • City 0, Sunderland 0
  • City 0, Palace 1
  • City 0, Hull 0

And in at least 3 away games against top sides, we overachieved but got nothing from it.  On balance, I have trouble being too critical of this years performance.

Everyone?.... wow i better step up my support, the money is going to chnage my attitude and now i REALLY want to stay up.

Where do i collect the bonus?

There will be avoiding relegation clauses in the contracts for sure, not sure what kind of "conspiracy" we can be discussing.

I would say the much needed recent upturn in form would be attriutable to:

1) Getting some badly needed rub of the green in some games, and by that i mean a bounce of a ball, opposition players being less clinical in their finishing, and things working in our favour, which makes a change. We have rode our luck over the past couple of games, but come through it unscathed which is both a relief and great in equal measure.

2) The effect that has had on confidence, where players do believe that they can pull off the great escape, and arent so adverse to trying things in a forward sense.

3) The manager utlising one of the major ingredients the squad has, in using pace in recent games.

4) A realisation from players that they do not want to go down. Professionalism, and personal pride. If you get relegated, you are damaged goods. A relegated team is a team full of losers. Personal pride and professionalism adds to the level of performance and has been a factor, not a deciding factor of course but a factor, in giving our side an extra edge over opponents with nothing at stake.

As well as an 'Avoiding Relegation Bonus', I'm sure some of the players who signed big contracts in the Summer, or during last season as promotion looked like a possibility, will have clauses that if we're relagated they'll take a pay cut! I don't think money is a factor, they're proffesional footballers who will want to be playing at the top level. If they were playing for free they wouldn't want to be relegated. Yes, some players are mercenaries and in it for the money, but that doesn't strike me with anyone in our squad.
