The Doctor Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 We have just bought one and he was on the bench ? From what's been said kante seems more like a box to box mid than a DM?
ScouseFox Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 btw if cambiasso was playing we'd have won 4-0 and the last ten minutes would be great buuuut king king Andy Andy kinggggggggggg yesss
MC Prussian Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 What is it with the Sunderland fans. Reading their forum, they've had threads about every thing weve done all summer and they seem to have a real dislike towards us. Not read such a hostile forum for a while. They genuinely thought we were going to be crap and would thrash us, and now they just bitch about our atmosphere. Since when do we have beef with them? Somewhat odd they've taken a liking of us now - when you'd think they'd care more (or less) about their immediate neighbors and fierce rivals, Newcastle United. Maybe they just needed a distraction under dire circumstances. Desperate times calling for desperate measures and all that...
Corky Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Terrific start to the season, going forward we looked very potent and threatening, Okazaki and Vardy's relentless running and harrying, Mahrez's box of tricks, Albrighton's crossing and the CM pair supplying them. Drinkwater was excellent, similar to his form two years ago, King played a good supporting role. The defence looked both shaky and commanding, Fletcher was a handful and Defoe's runs but we mostly nullified Johnson and their midfield. Second goal was very poor to concede but they'd probably say the same about our first two, although Vardy's header was clever. Think today will settle things down, a lot has been made of the atmosphere not being the same, Ranieri not getting a chance and how we'd set up. None of that today, positive crowd and a positive performance. Good work all round.
Babylon Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 From what's been said kante seems more like a box to box mid than a DM?What was it, most tackles in top 5 European leagues. He's a DM
The Doctor Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 What was it, most tackles in top 5 European leagues. He's a DM From what was said though, he'd win the ball back a lot, but also drove forwards readily and chipped in up top.
Itsthejoeker Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 I think the 442 shifted to a 352 when moving the ball forward, then back to the 442 when on the back foot.
Jattdogg Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 So did the NP lovers clap for him in the 7th minute as was mentioned on this forum?
steveherbe Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Apparently EC saw this display today, and has put in a transfer request at Olympiakos. Sorry mate, you are SO last season, we dont need you any more. Have a nice retirement in Greece. Well done to us UFS people, great display
Corky Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 So did the NP lovers clap for him in the 7th minute as was mentioned on this forum? No they didn't. It was never going to happen. Not one mention of Pearson at the game, everyone supported the team. So the NPFC faction didn't turn up and his supporters, detractors, even neutrals just got behind the current set-up. Plenty of us can like and appreciate him but also back what is happening now.
Russell sprout Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Wasn't the last and only time we went top down to a result against sunderland (0-0 draw at stadium of light in Peter Taylor era)
Robin JD Popley Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Well done lads; much like I thought - we shut many of the doubters up already. UP YOURS FLEET STREET - WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest ttfn Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Well where to start? Tactically Ranieri got it spot on today, springing a surprise with a 4-4-2, with Mahrez initially playing from the left and Albrighton from the right. Sunderland may well play 4-3-3 anyway all season but the 3 they had in midfield was ideally set up to deal with the 3 we'd have had in a 3-5-2, with Mahrez being occupied by Cattermole. The decision to start with a 4-4-2 and the speed and regularity with which we were able to get the ball to the wide players meant that Sunderland's 3 in the centre were rendered totally irrelevant, particularly Cattermole. Meanwhile, Patrick van Aanholt's suicidal decision to want to play left wing rather than left back meant that there was loads of space in behind for a fast winger to exploit, so Ranieri switched them over after about 10 minutes and Albrighton played from the left and Mahrez from the right. Drinkwater, Albrighton, King and Vardy were all excellent but for me the two stars of the show were Okazaki and Mahrez. The latter has been discussed to death and when he plays like he did today he's as good as any wide player in the division bar Hazard. Okazaki meanwhile was something of a revelation. Having never seen him play before I knew to expect a hard worker, but the way he linked up with his new teammates was outstanding. His positioning was routinely excellent and never gave the Sunderland midfielders the time or space to pick the ball off their limited centre backs, often forcing Sunderland to either dither with the ball in defence or clip it aimlessly upfield. Sunderland were absolutely abysmal and a 5-goal defeat wouldn't have been harsh on them. van Aanholt appears to have learned nothing since he was on loan here 4 years ago, still playing with the same utter disregard for his nominal position as a defender. Other than Pantilimon I'm not sure any of their players would have deserved more than a 4/10 and even the keeper himself was lucky not to be sent off. So, all in all a great start and a real triumph for Ranieri in particular, who got virtually everything right.
Thracian Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Okazaki was hugely impressive. He gave a masterclass in winning possession from unlikely situations with a fascinating combination of cunning and desire. He might be small of stature but he was a giant of determination whether putting his head ball into situations that would have had an X-certificate at the cinema or harrassing defenders into mistakes through his speed and unshakeable persistence. I noticed some of our warm-up included genuinely aggressive closing down and this was one of the keys to victory today - that, the speed of our passing on the counter attack and the refreshing impression that we'd finally worked on some set pieces particularly in relationship to near post and off the ball runs. Any concerns about a hangover from the Pearson era were banished by the sight of so many City players having clearly run themselves to a standstill. I remember watching Vardy's reaction to a late through ball. Having already leaned on his knees during a momentary break in play he just closed his eyes in a momentary gathering of strength and then took off with using every trace of energy left inside him. What a hero, what an attitude, what an example and what a memory of an altogether unforgettable performance from a team that probably can't spell the word "quit" much less understand it.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 That Cattermole substitution will go down in Foxestalk history.
weller54 Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Remember last season's home game against Sunderland? Pearson set up defensively and got the tactics terribly wrong.. Cost us two points and handed Sunderland a freebie point!... What a contrast to today seeing Ranieri get the formation absolutely spot on...
foxes_rule1978 Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Certain handball looking on MOTD they had the ref on their side and still got hammered
Raj Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Great start which we needed as some were twitchy after what happened during the off season!!!
ScouseFox Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 That Cattermole substitution will go down in Foxestalk history. that and the guy who told me coates was better than any of our defenders
Larry_LCFC Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Kasper has some serious work to do with his positioning. Coming flailing off your line on more than occasion will usually only end one way - which it did today.
The Doctor Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Remember last season's home game against Sunderland? Pearson set up defensively and got the tactics terribly wrong.. Cost us two points and handed Sunderland a freebie point!... What a contrast to today seeing Ranieri get the formation absolutely spot on... The games came in different circumstances though, that was all about stopping the rot; and even still mahrez ripped them open and should have had a couple of penalties.
Molly Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 http://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2015/08/08/andy-carroll-mocks-sunderland-on-twitter/? let's hope he'll be crying after our second game.
Guest Col city fan Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Why did we win this game today? 2 reasons: 1. We wanted it much more than they did. We won all the 50/50's, they looked like they were still on the beach. 2. Pace....We have it abundance. We have Vardy, Schlupp, Mahrez, Delaet. They are a SLOW, SLOW team. Loved that game today. We played with freedom and energy. It was 4 but could have been 6 or 7. Easy.
BlueSi13 Posted 8 August 2015 Posted 8 August 2015 Stunning performance, it honestly could have been 7/8 if we'd hadn't been so wasteful with some of our opportunities (sad to say but I think Vardy was guilty of this quite a bit today). The only thing I was disappointed with was the two goals conceded. Very sloppy, lazy and complacent and that needs to be stomped out. Made the scoreline incredibly flattering to the opposition. As for Sunderland, well, take out Defoe and I think their presence in the Premier League shames it quite frankly. Maybe Advocaat will decide to take that retirement after all. PS. Also delighted to see that Drinkwater now appears to have arrived as Premier League footballer
