Jamie Vardy

Recommended Posts

I'm completely with Haydos on this one.

Whether or not people see the term 'Jap' as racist, how bloody stupid are these footballers to let anything of this nature happen?

We and they are under the public spotlight all the time. All the time.

Probably us even more so, given the Pearson incident in Thailand.

None of our players should be so bloody daft as to say ANYTHING which could be construed (rightly or wrongly) as being racist.

They should shut up, be clever and get along with their lives in a decent way that brings no attention onto themselves.

This isn't the first time that Vardy has been accused of being a little scrote is it.

Use some common sense lad, keep your head down, keep playing great football and give the club some breathing space for God's sake.

I despair of some modern day footballers.

I'm British & have been referred to as a Brit many times & don't consider it to be racist.

However, Vardey is clearly being rudely abrupt with this guy but we do not know the context in detail...

I'm Irish. paddy I'm ok with , anyone call me a Mick and I'll remove thier head !!!

But it's the fact A, he is not japanese and it was being used in a derogatory/racist way because of his south East asian appearance

As others have said, if he did use the word "Jap", then the first thing they would need to do is found why he said it. Has he grown up around people who use it? Is it meant to be offensive in his eyes? Is it a local dialect thing? etc. Pearson, Hopper and Smith had no excuse. There is no mistaking terms like "slit-eye", especially when mixed with their actions. That was out and out racism. I think if anything, educating the whole squad may not go amiss. Stop any further incidents occurring.

After the game, walking to my car down Filbert Street I heard a bloke turn around and say to his mate 'Hey the slit eye played well didn't he?' Now that I find offensive.

Might they have been saying it ironically, since that was said on the Hopper video?

We do seem to have an uncanny way of getting into the newspapers(even the olde LaManga incidents) over the years for stupid stupid reasons. It must be a Leicester thing.

You could argue they should be though. They are high profile role models. People look up to them as their "heroes". Whilst that shouldn't prevent them enjoying themselves, they have extra responsibility and should behave accordingly. It comes with the territory, and they are paid very well for it.

No, the two are very much comparable.

I'm getting a little bit fed of having to explain racism to people who should know better (that is, everyone.)

Calling Okazaki a 'Jap' is crude, a bit politically incorrect, rude and disrespectful. He is, however, Japanese, the fans know (mostly) he's Japanese and they aren't being deliberately offensive (for the most part.)

Calling an Asian man whose ethnicity you have no idea about a 'Jap' is racist, calling Okazaki a 'chink' is racist, singing that Yuki Abe eats dogs is racist. These things are all racist because you're making ludicrous and ignorant assumptions about a person based on their race.

If Jamie Vardy called this man a Jap and assuming that he had no idea the man was Japanese or not (lets not clutch at straws here, it's about 99% certain Vardy didn't have a clue and it's exceptionally more likely that Asian patrons in a casino in Leicester will be Chinese and not Japanese) then he is being racist and offensive.

Vardy was most likely in the wrong and it's embarrassing for him and the club but I also accept he was probably drunk and emotional, I don't think he's a terrible human being because he lashed out. What offends me far more is that plenty of people on this forum, who are sober and clear minded in the light of day, are looking at this and dismissing the use of the word as inoffensive and denying that there's any racism present. That, for me, is far worse.

What a load of sanctimonious shilo you spout! The word 'Jap' is merely a diminutive of the word 'Japanese' and has no offensive or derogatory connotation whatsoever. There exists other terms for Japanese people that are certainly derogatory and if his purpose was to denigrate someone on account of their race he would've used one of those. Merely assuming the nationality of an individual based on their racial appearance may be wrong-headed, but it is not by and of itself is not an example of racist behaviour. The dirty little rag in question (with it's own filthy reputation for using racist language and stirring-up genuine racial hatred as well as the lies it told about Hillsborough AND the fact that it has used the diminutive 'Jap' itself in its own headlines) should be told to 'do one' in no uncertain terms. There really is nothing to see in this story. Vardy should do absolutely nothing. We should all move on and forget it even happened...

He is not japanese I know him

He is also a bloody pain

Where is he from?

Does he look Japanese? By that I mean is it normal to look at him think he is Japanese? I like to think I can tell my Japanese from my Korean and Chinese but some Koreans and Chinese can look very Japanese and vice versa.

Having now watched the video, why is the offense about what is essentially name calling and not about aggressive, violent behaviour in public which is surely far worse?

I'd rather someone said "oil honky" to me than they offered me out to kick my head in (I'm not saying Vardy did that, but clearly there was aggressive confrontation later.)
