Oxfordfox83 Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 Prompted by some posts in the strength of postion thread, I thought I'd see what people thought our best hybrid team would be, picking from MON's strongest and today's squad. My thoughts as follows: GK: Tim Flowers. Strong cases to be made for Keller and especially for Kasper, who since his return from injury has definitely won us points in his own, but for all-round reliable performance I reckon Flowers had it. RB: Kaamark. No contest really. I'm a de Laet fan and I think he'll keep improving, but Kaamark was a rock, great under pressure and good range of passing. CB: Huth, Elliott©. Can you imagine trying to play against those two? Big, brave players with a good footballing brain and threatening from any set piece. Was and Walsh on the bench in case things got nasty... LB: Schlupp. Great going forward and increasingly assured going back. There aren't many better in the PL at the moment... RW: Albrighton. Possibly the toughest call of all, because this means Mahrez is on the bench, but Mahrez has yet to prove to me that he can contribute positively when he's not being allowed to run the show. So Albrighton, quick, strong, experienced and clever is the one I'd pick. He's been huge in our resurgence, good defensively and creative... CM: Lennon, Izzett. The best partnership I've seen at the club. Some great players around both eras, James, Cambi, Parker, but Izzett was reliably the creative heart of a brilliant team, and Lennon the perfect foil for him. LW: Guppy. Staggering number of assists, great corners and our own lefty Beckham. Honourable mentions to Schlupp and possibly Mahrez, but Guppy was a team of the season player every year. FW: Heskey, Vardy. Another area where we have riches to choose from, but a surprisingly clear cut big man/little man choice. Both unfashionable England internationals, both horrible to mark and both almost definitive faces of our team in each era. Looking forward to Okazaki making this a much more difficult choice, which he looks to have the potential to do. BENCH: Schmeichel, Was, Walsh, Parker, Mahrez, Shinji, Cottee By my reckoning, that's 7-4 of first XI to MON, but so much excitement for the season to come, and it could really change. Your thoughts?
MrsJohnMurphy Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 Guppy ahead of Mahrez? https://vine.co/v/MDWgQjnOBHm
fazzyfox Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 You could also throw Walshy on up front, he'd be in his element with Albrighton and Guppy putting their quality crosses in. I'm physically drooling at the prospect.
Oxfordfox83 Posted 16 August 2015 Author Posted 16 August 2015 Heskey wasn't here in 2000 was he? Yeah, he was. I was going on the legendary Sunderland game in 2000, but to be fair I think Kaamark was off by then so it's with a bit of licence... There's bound to be a bit of bias because a) I was 16 then, and inevitably players are greater when you're young, and b) we know more about what those players went on to do. There's every chance Fuchs, Kante, DD, Okazaki etc could be some of our best ever, but they're still young or early in their City careers so there's a lot more to come. Exciting times...

I'm physically drooling at the prospect. Very true. I had toyed with Ulloa just because of those two putting balls in, but couldn't drop Emile or Vards... Can imagine Walshy coming on fuming and getting a hat trick...
KP Fox Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 Heskey wasn't here in 2000 was he? yeah, left to go to Liverpool just after the Collymore hat trick match against Sunderland.
Hirsty The Blue 94 Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 Flowers Huth Elliot Taggart Albrighton Lennon King Izzet Guppy Heskey Vardy
Raw Dykes Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 Ever seen that show where they try to work out who would win between, say, vikings vs. samurais, zulus vs. medieval knights, etc.? (I'm pretty sure they even did Taliban vs. IRA) Edit: It was called Deadliest Warriors. They should do that with legendary football teams. Imagine seeing Holland '74 vs Spain '08, or England '66 vs a 60s Real Madrid side. I'd definitely watch that. It should be pretty easy to make. It would be great to have it as accurate as possible, but even if they only use Football Manager data, it would still be great to see. I think our team right now would beat the 2000 side 6 or 7 times out of 10, but then I reckon pretty much the same would be true for Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, etc. I'm half tempted to use FM data editor to sim LCFC '15 vs LCFC '00, but it's a lot of effort. If anyone has already done it, or really wants to, please make a video for us. We'll be forever in your debt. FlowersHuthElliotTaggartAlbrightonLennonKingIzzetGuppyHeskeyVardy No Mahrez?! Are you off your rocker?

I agree with nearly all of it, but Mahrez would get in ahead of Guppy for me. I'd have Guppy as a sub. Cambiasso would have to be in there somewhere, as well. Ahead of Parker for me, but maybe not Izzet or Lennon. From what I've seen so far, I think there might be a good chance Kante will end up in this.
bovril Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 I reckon Oxford has it pretty much spot on. Maybe a midfield 3 of Izzet, Parker and Cambi. I'd keep Guppy in for his versatility, he was a true wing back.

fleckneymike Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 Those doubting Guppy need to remember he performed at this level for many seasons, Mahrez may ultimately prove to be the better player but Guppy was no mug. To place his ability into persective the only player who could cross like him was Beckham.

bovril Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 Parker over Lennon?? Yeah that was heart over head really. I just think Parker was one of the most talented ball players I've ever seen. Never missed a penalty, took a beautiful corner, set up 3 of our most important ever goals with looping free kicks; that cross to Grayson at the back post against Wimbledon is still the best free kick I've seen from a City player.
FoxSince88 Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 How do people not realise that mahrez is the best player to put a Leicester shirt on, including Martin o Neil years is beyond me
shailen Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 Not trying to show off or anything, but I said last season during our losing spell this team had the potential to be better than the MON team and got absolutely ridiculed. Funny how a few results can change opinions, so whilst I stick to my original opinion that this team can be better, until they actually prove it, no comparisons should be made.
Bryn Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 Has to be 5-3-2 for me. Flowers Kaamark Huth Elliot Taggart Guppy Izzet Lennon Cambiasso Heskey Vardy

Funny how a few results can change opinions, so whilst I stick to my original opinion that this team can be better, until they actually prove it, no comparisons should be made. Exactly. Whilst I don't wish to put a downer on anything, we were awful for three quarters of last season. We've had 2 good results this season and all of a sudden it doesn't seem possible for us to be relegated. It was a different era, a hell of a lot has changed in football, but that O'Neill team achieved unbelievable results for this football club. I hope this is the start of something similar, I really do. But this potential has to be backed up with achievements too.
Clever Fox Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 To be fare to Mons team they were a good top ten side. This present team still has to do that. But I do believe that the present team going forward would tear Mons team apart. Simply because their too quick for most defences to deal with. Never mind one as slow as Mons defence.
Oxfordfox83 Posted 16 August 2015 Author Posted 16 August 2015 How do people not realise that mahrez is the best player to put a Leicester shirt on, including Martin o Neil years is beyond me Not yet he isn't. He started well last year, was crap after ACON, and finished well. He's gone off like a rocket this year, but it's only two games. So I disagree. Keep it up for a couple of seasons and a few better decisions and he'll be up there with the best (Izzett, for those who were wondering...) [edit: best of my lifetime. Weller etc I can't comment on...]

Raw Dykes Posted 16 August 2015 Posted 16 August 2015 How can you leave out Bruno berner And although he was a knob is put collymore over heskey Because he wasn't here in 2000 and he's not here now?
