De Laet, the new "Wellens"

I know that as a Leicester fan it is my job to have one scapegoat, but im tiring of the continual abuse of RDL.

Im sure we are just trying to find something/one to complain about. Imo the Schlupster is a far worse defender than RDL, but, like most, i forgive him that because of what he offers going forward. RDL has to cover for the genius of Mahrez and still provide solid backing.

Yesterday, RDL was solid yet again, and even gave us hope thanks to his goal. I dont "love" the guy, but i think there is far too much scapegoating going on.

Right/left backs will always be easy targets for fans.  A lot of the best players in the world attack from out wide and at this level, from a defensive point of view, it's about damage limitation.  It's inevitable they'll get beat a few times a game when faced against Hazard, Walcott etc.  It's telling that you very rarely hear fans raving about a left/right back, the few that shine out like Ashley Cole in his prime are like gold dust.  Schlupp gets away with his shortcomings because he's new to the position and he offers so much going forwards, but frankly he's no better defensively than RDL.  It's basically a shit position to play.

Just because you criticise a few bad performances, it doesn't mean he's a scapegoat..

He has been very inconsistent, but I wouldn't be over critical as he is certainly committed.

My main concern is how he switches off at key moments and his positional sense makes him far more liable to be caught out in the Prem compared to the Championship where his pace usually got him out of trouble.

He played so much better when mahrez went inside. Riyad is awesome but almost needs that free role.

As for the 2nd goal he was no where to be seen as he'd gone for aa 1:2 and the other player gave the ball away.

You are deluded of you think he was solid, looked particularly shakey next to Huth, and was nowhere to be seen for their second goal

lol oh come on, he was about the least culpable player for the goal. Once Riyad lost the ball he was always going to be in trouble. I love Schluppo but he had a proper Jeff moment there in not tracking Gil.

His positioning yesterday was absolutely diabolical. Infuriating to watch at times but he scored so this thread should have been out off for a few weeks.

good post anyway we have a new scapegoat now in Inler

It is not about how good or bad he plays, it is the fact that every time we concede or are losing in a match the first comments are always, De Laet is shit. Yesterday the whole team was shit in the first half we could have had Cafu in his prime at right back and it wouldn't have made a difference.

De Laet and Schlupp are the Vardy and Okazaki of full backs. They represent everything that is good about this team pace, energy, commitment and desire, but with that comes risk, we could play Fuchs and Benny at full back keep our shape and defend first but we would lose so much pace and attacking threat. It is all about risk and reward, do you want to see us going for it with pace at every opportunity trying to score? the risk is we are left exposed to the counter but the alternative is risk free possession football but that didn't work when Pearson tried to change our style of play after the United game.

Ranieri has 2 choices just let us go out there and attack, take the old Keegan approach, we'll score more goals than them and accept the risks that come with it. Or develop a little more culture and composure in the team so that we can mix it up keep possession for periods and then move up a gear and go all out attack when needed. The problem is the players that give us the attacking edge in scenario 1 are the ones we would drop in scenario 2.

My problem with De laet is that stupid run he seems to keep trying that always ends in the winger being tackled and the other team running up the other end and scoring because De laet is stood in the oppositions D. He seems to keep trying to knock it down the line then instead of the overlap makes a run for edge of the area.

I've always been an RDL fan. His pace is brilliant when he's awake, watching smug **** wingers try and skin him. Fab.

But he's had a shit start to the season and looked wonky last year as well, we had our best spell with him out of the team.

It's not mistakes he makes on the ball that are a problem it's what he does without it. All of Villa's joy came down his side yesterday. He's never where he should be.

I'm fed up of seeing opposition wide men in acres of space receiving the ball with RDL navel gazing somewhere in or up field.

The other player being Mahrez.  Inler was covering and the "pace" that Mahrez shows in looking like he might be trying to get the ball back is shocking.

RDL is exposed by Mahrez but you have to accept that.

He was poor in the first half yesterday but so was most of the team. The amount of stick he gets on here is out of proportion.

Had a poor game yesterday but having two very quick wingbacks is vital to our game. Would definitely rather him than the woman beater Simpson.

I can sense a point in the original thread starter, but from what I've seen, there have been plenty of other players also getting some (deserved) stick, especially when it comes to their defending: Schlupp gets away with it because he offers more going forward and because he's a fans' darling to a certain extent, Mahrez still needs to work on his tracking back. Inler in his first start for us was a bit shaky, Huth came up with a silly pass straight back at the opposition yesterday, King still goes missing sometimes, etc.

Even last season, I've witnessed Cambiasso getting overrun in certain situations.

At no point are the fans making De Laet a "scapegoat" and here I think you're seeing things - it's just that he's mentioned more often than others in terms of bad positioning and failing to maintain his defensive duties. That's not that much of a worry as long as we keep on getting results. Imagine the backlash on here should we find ourselves in a longer-lasting slump again, with De Laet continuing to neglect his defensive area.
