davieG Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 As the Premier League pauses for the latest international break, fans are reflecting on their respective clubs' start to the 2015/16 season. Already two managers have left their jobs, with Dick Advocaat and Brendan Rodgers departing Sunderland and Liverpool respectively. Reigning champions Chelsea are currently struggling in 16th place, with eight points from eight games, while Crystal Palace and Leicester City are riding high in fourth and fifth. Manchester City lead the way from Arsenal and Manchester United, with Newcastle, Sunderland and Aston Villa propping up the table. So, how will the Premier League pan out over the course of the season? No one knows for sure, but the team at Stats.com have had a go at predicting the final table. A leading sports technology and data company, Stats use a complex aglorithm to determine 'expected points'. kingcarr21 Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 I would love to know how they created a 'Complex Algorithm' that suggests Chelsea will finish in the top 4. This just looks like some random blokes prediction. Either way would love to see Villa, Sunderland and Bournemouth go down

Seems pretty accurate to be fair. Obviously hard to say wether this would actually happen but I can see this being a final table. Chelsea are bound to go on a run sooner or later, however much I'm enjoying them struggle lately I can't see it lasting too long. Liverpool will have to wait and see with new appointment but with names being linked could imagine being a close 4th. Great to see Villa finally down! Interesting on Newcastle especially with the way they look currently and from the back end of last year. Will be happy with 13th finish, a strong mid table finish to build on for next year I think it a pretty realistic target too?
FireFox Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 Better than last season and look to be out of any relegation scrap. Also, before the season started, we wouldn't have expected to do better than any of those teams above us. Obviously fan expectations are higher now that we've started so well, but come May, we would all accept that table.
ScouseFox Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 that bottom three would have me celebrating all summer
RobHawk Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 13th is entirely possible but i can't see it myself! There's too many poorer teams in the league this year!
Xen Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 There was one of these floating around - which I think was mentioned in another talksport article - a few weeks back I seem to remember. That time the calculation was posted and it was obvious they'd used practically no significant variables, just extrapolated from previous results. It had Man City conceding 2 goals all season, iirc. Obvious that this is exactly the same, only now that there are a few more data points it looks a little bit more normal. A little bit of fiddling with it as well I'd imagine, given Chelsea being up in 4th. Oh, and fvck off have they done it with a supercomputer. I was bored over the summer so made one of these myself (file corrupted, unfortunately) in a couple hours using Excel, predicting every single game accounting for both form and surprise results (arbitrary frequency) and that was no less statistically accurate than this. Ugh. Wish they'd stop trying to pass things like this off as gospel. Sticking the word 'supercomputer' in front of it means absolutely nothing as all you need is the processing power of an average laptop to crunch the numbers. As a final year stats student, things like this make me angry .
yorkie1999 Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 With my simplex algorithm of a brain i predict it's wrong.
LanguedocFox Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 It would be interesting to have a section of the forum where all of the predictions could be posted for us to have a look (laugh?) at come May. I meant to collect links for all of the pundit predictions about teams to be relegated this season, because City featured on practically every one. And I recall one that said Newcastle would finish something like 6th. I predicted City to finish 12th. Mind you, I also predicted Chelski to win the Prem...
Larry_LCFC Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 Dont see what 8,9,10,11 or 12 have that we don't. Could easily finish top 10.

Bayfox Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 Watching Chelsea should be good soon then, as I'm pretty sure they need to have a record breaking run to make the top 4. From what I can make out from listening to talk sport, no one has had such a bad start and made the top 4.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 I could live with 13th place finish (it's progress, but I think we can do better), but what happens to Newcastle to end up just behind us? They're in serious shit already. Chelsea are bound to find form sooner or later but that it actually seems they might not make top 4 this year is hilarious I would love that bottom 3 though.
davieG Posted 7 October 2015 Author Posted 7 October 2015 Wow people getting angry, no one takes it as a serious piece of work apart from anything else it's from Talksport.
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 That bottom three, I'd be dancing in the streets.
Xen Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 Exactly this. You could leave your ipad running Football Manager for a season and get a similar outcome. Now you mention it, it wouldn't surprise me if exactly that happened
Fox92 Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 13th is an improvement on 14th so we should be Champions in just over ten years.
Kitchandro Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 I'd be disappointed with 13th tbh. We're a better side than Stoke & West Ham.
Marmite Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 Swap Newcastle for Bournemouth and I would be well happy. Sunderland are just awful with horrible fans and have been winging it for the past few seasons
Trav Le Bleu Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 If they had used a proper supercomputer the answer would be 42.
