Drinkwater

Liverpool paid 35 million for Andy Carroll so judging by their naivety they should have to pay at least that to get Danny, not worried about this one at all.

Danny is due an improved contract. Most of our players are. Until these are resolved, agents will place stories to increase the value of their clients.

It's possible that DD and n'golo's agents will stall on negotiations until after the euros Incase they have stellar tournaments

and he only stayed with liverpool cos his agent made them raise his wages to compete with what others were offering.

He could have gone to Chelsea and double his wages and win titles. Chelsea wanted him. But he stayed. And he's one of the very few players who'd do that.

Drinkwater and Mahrez are just like most modern footballers. I can't believe people actually believe the tripe that players come out with that they want to stay.

Its new contract agent mischief surely. Why on earth would a Man U fan playing for a CL club leave to go to Liverpool not in Europe at all?

He'd likely start the car immediately if Man U came in for him admittedly.

They paid that after getting 50 mil for Torres and had one day to replace him. Silly money all round.

Ha!

Some Liverpool fans not too keen.

A lot of Liverpool fans don't want him and don't rate him. I understand their fears. They bought Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen after they had impressive campaigns with Sunderland and Swansea respectively, and both of them are now deemed not good enough. Granted, Joe Allen was was signed by Rodgers who used to manage him at Swansea. And yes I get it, neither Sunderland nor Swansea actually won the league.

Drinkwater has been good for us this season but until he does it for for 2-3 seasons in the PL people will have doubts over him. Understandably so.

Especially without the Kante influence.

We're almost bound to see some different midfield partnerships next season

In the Mail it says Leicester will offer Drinkwater £80k a week to fend off interest from Liverpool.....interest that was made up by him and his agent.

It's the same with Kante, Mahrez and Vardy.

Fine by me. That's the game. They've just completed the most amazing accomplishment in recent footballing history. They deserve it. If we've got all of our best players signed up on nice big fat tight contracts in September I'll be applauding our management team.

Don't think the interest in kante and mahrez is made up

We've got to be careful though haven't we? 80k a week for four separate players. Seems a bit much or is that normal, like can we actually afford that? I mean, say we go out of the European Cup and don't win the League again (say we finished 10th next season) would we still make enough to sustain paying players that amount?

Drinkwater's been excellent for our particular team and way of playing. However, in a different team with different tactics his lack of goals may be be a significant handicap.

Because normally a team would need more goals from central midfield and we've only got away with it because of the brilliance of Vardy/Mahrez and the effect of having three of our four midfield players plus Shinji offering massive defensive assistance.

I don't say such an aproach couldn't work elsewhere but Drinkwater wouldn't necessarily shine in a plan B and Leicester's massive strengths in employing such an approach wouldn't be easily replicated and anything less than outstanding and the system would be vulnerable.

We'd still be getting in the region of 120m for tv rights. If we don't start paying at least 80k a week for a minimum of 4 players we will be out of the CL and down to 10th very quickly. Doesn't matter how much the players love each other if someone else will double your salary you'd be mad not to leave.

No point paying £80,000 a week for someone (Drinkwater or anyone else) if we can get better or as good for considerably less.

The £120m doesn't change the need to be continue getting good value for money. That's not to make a judgement about Drinkwater but you don't have to spend up to your income because it's there. Others have done that and wasted a fortune.

What seems to be happening at our club just now is that players/agents/friends are using real or contrived publicity to get our highly successful players more money while they have the chance - either at Leicester or elsewhere.

Our management needs to weigh each situation on balance and decide what's best for the club's ambition and finances. Loyalty? I think there is loyalty but it's likely to be conditional loyalty. Hopefully we'll have a contingency plan for every eventuality. And will avoid being held to ransome.

80,000 a week for 25 players (your whole squad), would be £104m... what we earnt last year alone fro the prem would almost cover that. Let alone the new TV deal and champions league money, extra sponsorship and all the trappings that come with being premier league winners. We clearly aren't going to pay 25 people that, but it shows that paying that money to some members of your squad is actually more than doable... if you think they are worth it.

So long as there are wage drops upon relegation, then there is no issue.

Highest scoring central midfielders from last season:

Noble 7

Davis 5

Kouyate 5

Drinkwater 3

Considering he's a defensive midfielder who rarely gets in the box that's reasonable and only 3 of his piers managed more. Alose he managed 7 assists and of the 13 players in the league who managed more are either forwards or attacking midfielders.

Drinkwater tries to be attacking at least part of the time - and needs to be within our system because we don't offer much  threat from centre-midfield particular when Shinji's having a temporary break..

I've not sought to criticise Drinkwater's achievements within the system but your figures really emphasise my point and more so when applied to the next level.

I actually think Drinkwater has the ability and technique to score more but, for some reason (perhaps his workload),  there's no signs of it yet. The question then is whether a theoretical £80,000 a week is good enough value for our next level of ambition?

I can't answer that. If we were top of the Premiership again and showing good form in the Champions League or something else then it's justified. If we're loitering around the relegation zone it'd be another matter. I hope we find the right balance.
