MrSpaM Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Do you have a link to the standby list please? I can't find it. I don't have a link unfortunatly but one of the articles I read yesterday said that they wouldn't even be considered if there was an injury

1972 Fox Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Same shit, different tournament... When will our managers learn from history? We have seen it time and time again. The earliest version I can remember was Bryan Robson, anyone else go further back? Jeff Astle 1970. He must have been injured to miss that open goal against Brazil.
Guest Col city fan Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Was chatting with our kid last night. If you look on paper, probably only France, Germany and Belgium have stronger squads than we do. Therefore, we should be looking at making the semis. We agreed that anything less than this should be seen as us failing again. You somehow know it's not going to go like that though. Some nation will surprise and do really well (I have a sneaky feeling for Republic of Ireland personally). And it will be no shock if we somehow contrive to fook it up again. I wish I did but I have so little faith in Hodgson motivating them and getting the tactical side of things right.
weller54 Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 I'll love it.. Love it!! When England don't even qualify to the knock out stages!! Come on WALES!
katieakita Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Jeff Astle 1970. He must have been injured to miss that open goal against Brazil. about 2.10 in. Not having that, Jeff used to use my old Post Office and was a top man, proper gentleman who loved football, I never had the balls to ask him about this while he was alive but a couple of years later was chatting to his Mrs and got talking about it, he got slaughtered for the miss, what about Alili vs Germany or Rashford and his one on one on Friday. He had been on the bench in God knows what heat with the sweat pouring off him and was told to go on, no warm up in those days as already hot. He got the ball turned and shot and put it just wide, a positive miss like Kane's penalty no doubt. What is more telling is that even all them years ago he was told he played for the wrong team!!! and a move north or to London would help his international career
ThaiFox Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Woy is a ranker. He picks a player who has played just a handful of P/L games, and 30 minutes as an international, doing little except scoring a scuffed goal, another striker who is so injury prone it will be amazing if he makes it through a match, plus two midfield players who have done little since returning, having played a handful of games between them because of injury. Plenty of midfielders should be ahead of Wilshire & Henderson, not only just Drinky. They have proved nothing since returning and it is a huge risk picking injury prone players, as has been proved with Wooney and Beckham. The same goes for Sturridge. Townsend has been in great form and I feel as sorry for him as I do Drinky. Plus he gives other options and was our only true winger. It shows how out of touch Woy is. He would have been a much better choice than yet another injury prone striker. Now I bet the idiot plays Rashford instead of Vardy. Or puts Vardy at left back. Hodgson is a very bad joke and it saddens me to think we'll blow it again, even though we have good players this time around, just because he is in charge, playing such boring and tepid safe football which gets us nowhere.
dylanlegend Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Wheelchair may be a decent player, but as we have proved this season individuals don't win you anything, a team does. I can't believe the amount of money these people get paid and can't see that they should be building the team around the Alli & Kane + Drinky & Vardy partnerships. The link up play between these respective pairs is natural and could have really caused some damage. Instead we have wheelchair, who hasn't formed any kind of meaningful partnerships this season and all the Liverpool player who, although may know each other's style, are all basically wa*k players
foxes21 Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Deeney & Defoe over Sturridge & Rashford Townsend & Albrighton over Milner & Barkley Drinkwater & Noble over Wheelchair & Henderson Scott Dann over Kyle Walker, as Stones can cover RB/CB. So many players deserving to go, then there's others like Cresswell & Antonio who have been fantastic but never got considered.

Babylon Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Unbelievable. I just can't see the thinking behind it. I would ask 'what does Danny have to do?' but the answer to that question is all too sadly obvious. Unless you have been bought for £20m or come up via a youth system at a top club people aren't interested. The internet is flooded with people saying DD isn't good enough. Based on, well nothing much at all as performances for Leicester and the stats show otherwise. The same was said about Vardy when he first came into the squad and struggled on the wing, "not good enough", "out of his depth"... even still he gets sneers and moans about his quality despite what he's done for us and England when played in position, with the first team around him. There is no way in this world that the likes of Henderson, Wilshere, Sterling, Sturridge, Llana, Barclay are actually being picked on form.
Koke Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 I'd have picked the following midfielders Wilshere Dier Alli Lallana Drinkwater Sterling Milner And then a toss up between Henderson and Barkley. It's fashionable to lambast Milner but he has 12 assists this season. People are laying into Milner for being "ordinary" but are bigging up Albrighton. I'd then pick the following strikers Kane Vardy Rooney Sturridge Rashford
JoachimWasMyHero Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Maybe he needs a move to a big side like Liverpool, sit on the bench / play a few games a season then would probably stand a better chance in getting in the England squad. He could not of done anymore this season. England same old $hit, might scrape out the group to get knocked out in the quarters. Embarrassing!

Vardy was selected last year after scoring a massive 5 goals and spending a lot of the season playing second fiddle to David Nugent in a side bottom of the league for 2/3 of the season. Nobody on here was criticising Roy for that decision.
Babylon Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Vardy was selected last year after scoring a massive 5 goals and spending a lot of the season playing second fiddle to David Nugent in a side bottom of the league for 2/3 of the season. Nobody on here was criticising Roy for that decision. He was picked on the back of the end of the season where he was in form and almost unplayable, for an England team that had basically no fit strikers. Not over what he did the whole season and not because he played second fiddle to Nugent. So he was picked on current form... which is exactly what people are screaming for consistently, and not just when "names" are injured. The manager doing it once in a blue moon because of injuries and then never bothering again is not what people want.
Soar Fox Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Jamie Carragher spouting a load of bollox again. "As for Andros Townsend, it came down to: ‘Do I pick the in-form club player, or stay with trusted regulars, such as Raheem Sterling and Henderson?’ Even with Jordan’s fitness worries, he’s made the right call. Trusted to do what exactly? Fail in the group stages again like 6 of the same midfielders did in the last tournament.

We could have the best team the world has ever seen with Hodgson, and still go out of the tournament early scoring 2 goals.
Jattdogg Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 "Trusted regulars" is why england fails time and time again. Mix it up. Shake it up. Be a leader not a tosser.

Trusted to do what exactly? Fail in the group stages again like 6 of the same midfielders did in the last tournament. Never rated Sterling personally. Another speed merchant that this country hypes up. He's just a better version of Walcott, but not by massive margins. Speed merchant, erratic decision makings, low footballing IQ. Henderson will be discarded the moment Liverpool become a top 4 side. He's living off that one season they finished second. The England selection have always been like this. When Andy Cole and Kevin Phillips were tearing up this league they were overlooked for Michael Owen who had been out injured for 5 months. If England fail it won't be because Townsend and Drinkwater wasn't picked. It will be because the defence is shocking and the tactics are abysmal...and some of our players are just piss poor.
midland_red Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 I don't think anyone here can be seriously surprised by this. A look at Hodgson's body language when he saw Vardy score shows how little he even wanted him in the team. This is partly 'big club mentality' - if he fails, which he will, for doing exactly what other England managers have done he'll still survive and so will his fat wage packet. If he fails for doing something different he will be more at risk. It's the equivalent of the old IT adage that 'no-one ever got fired for buying IBM' It is also his utter total mediocrity and lack of aspiration. I suspect he will only play Vardy as a sub or out of position and then drop him after setting up to fail. TBH, and being cynical here, I'm glad Drinky won't be picking up any injuries...I regard Leicester City as being much more important..
ourlines Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 A joke. A utter joke. Barkley / Henderson / Lallana / ****ing Jack Wilshere - how the hell are they a more solid bet than Drinkwater. I mean, the only blessing for Danny will be after England crash-out due to Woy's tactical ineptitude. Really really bizarre decision making by a very average manager.
midland_red Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Shearer tells the truth http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3618633/England-squad-selected-reputation-fitness-form-says-former-captain-Alan-Shearer-criticises-Danny-Drinkwater-snub-ahead-Euro-2016.html He has matured so much as a commentator on MOTD...almost ready to forgive him for kicking Lennon the way he did
Shelf Side Spurs Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Vardy was selected last year after scoring a massive 5 goals and spending a lot of the season playing second fiddle to David Nugent in a side bottom of the league for 2/3 of the season. Nobody on here was criticising Roy for that decision. I don't think anyone is suggesting that they don't want England to do well, we all do. The complaint, at least from me, is that the current structure of the FA and the manager had an opportunity to pick form players and have a real go.....this may of course still happen, but selecting some of the final 23 smacks of 'safety first', and Hodgson has been open in saying loyalty is a big factor in his decisions. Thus the expectation by most is another slog through a tournament to the quarter finals when we might potentially have done so much better....all guesswork obviously. Personally if Wilshere is fit and firing then he can influence a game, on current form, which is what counts most, I don't see that with Barkley, Sterling can't get in City's first team, Lallana has been first sub for Liverpool most of the season as far as I can recall, Henderson has no real form at all and possibly carrying an injury. It doesn't make much sense. Partnerships and mutual understanding also count for a lot at the top level...Vardy could have really benefitted from Drinkwater playing and there is no doubt that part of the spine against Germany of Dier, Alli and Kane was a benefit to those players. It appears that Hodgson has been influenced by the FA and big club effect with regard to Liverpool...they are certainly not there on merit. I would have had both Drinkwater (on merit and for the Vardy understanding) and Townsend. In addition I would play Vardy central and Kane wide not the other way around. Kane oftens drifts wide and comes in from the wing at Spurs, Vardy is wasted out wide in my view. The final thing is that Hodgson likes this midfield diamond thing, whilst most of the clubs in the Premier League, train and play with some sort of 4-2-3-1 variation. This probably isn't going to help the team.....which for my money causes a further lack of understanding on the players part. Where does Rooney have his biggest influence for example, who will protect the centre backs (probably our biggest weakness) - Dier on his own? Hodgson did well in the qualifying campaign, he's made an error in selection here, I hope he has the guts to go with an exciting line up and play attacking football in the tournament. I doubt it but there's hope.
