Teams that will do well have winners in them. Germany have 8 players that won a league or champions league last season, Italy have 8, Spain have 6 and France have 5. Even Wales and Austria have 2 each. We could easily have taken 4. But no, we take 1, just like Sweden, Turkey, Switzerland, Poland and freaking Iceland! I actually think that group of teams are more our level

Sorry to draw parallels with Rugby Union but when Eddie Jones took over from Stuart Lancaster after we ****ed up the World Cup, Jones quite rightly said that too many players were getting picked on reputation. He said when he took the job that players wouldn't even be considered unless they were the best players week in, week out at club level. He duly left out about 5 or 6 guys who played pretty much every test under Lancaster and has created a climate where players get picked on form and not on past glories.

The result, the guy has won every single test he's been in charge of and won a first grand slam in a decade. England's reserve side just trounced Wales' 1st XV too. He's got the players he left out busting a gut to get back in and young guys who feel like there's an opportunity if they're playing well.

I'm sure this is down to Jones' ability to keep everyone on their toes and the fact that he has the balls to tell a player straight what he thinks of them. The problem with the England football team is that you have a coach with no bollocks, players who have no motivation to bust a gut because they know they'll be picked no matter what and on the flipside, a swathe of players who know they won't get picked no matter how well they play. Guys like Scott Dann, Mark Noble, Mark Albrighton etc

I think Hodgson is being misinterpreted on the 'systems win you nothing' quote.

Think what he is trying to say is that you can have the best system in the world and still win nothing if your players are shite.

Conversely I'd cite Pep Guardiola. Everyone raves about him but with the players he's had in the league's he's won I reckon he could flip a coin on what formation to play then use a random number generator to pick his side and it wouldn't really matter. Looking forward to seeing how he copes over here.
