Messi Retired From International Football

Thought this deserved a thread of its own. Unbelievable news if true. One of the best players in history quitting at the age of 29. Has the pressure of living up to the likes of Maradona/Pele gone to his head?

Strange but then Argentinian football is strange. The politics and under achieving in Argentina makes England look like world beaters.

This is a country that's often had more affection for Carlos Tevez than the best player in the world, purely because Tevez comes from the right estate. Bonkers.

Misses a one on one in extra time in the '14 World Cup final and yesterday misses a penalty in the Copa America final.

Where as Maradona dragged Argentina to the '86 World Cup, in fact he was player of the tournament.

That's what separates them for me. Big stage and everything.

Aguero and Higuain have reportedly joined him in retirement.

So has Mascherano but this is much less of a shock.

And Di Maria, Lavezzi and Biglia too.

He's never quite been able to live up to the pressure of playing for his country in my opinion.

Terrible shame. The last World Cup should have been his.

He must have contributed about 8 goals to the team in the last 2 games through scoring or assisting.

Him and Ronaldo just seem to be pretty awful at penalties.

Shame. I was just about getting used to his sexy beard.

Messi is another proof that a beard will make a man 10x more beautiful.

Messi has dragged them to every final, and won the player of the tournament in the last World Cup? Shame he hasn't won any because think he should be recognised equally as much as Maradona.

That's an absolute shocker of a news. Well, makes you wonder how long it'll take for Argentina to get back to their old strength with more than half of their key players retiring from international football.

There must be some really dodgy things going on at AFA.

I'm assuming there's some internal politics going on if all of their good players in their twenties have done it.

There must be, it seems like all their best players are leaving too. How bad would it be for a country to waste the talent of Messi, Higuain, Aguero, Di Maria etc due to internal issues. Would be mental.

No problem, ready made replacement in Leonardo Ulloa.

I read somewhere he was going to pledge his allegiances to Chile but don't know how much truth there was in that.

That was ages ago when he scored in several games in our first season back.

Then we didn't win for about six months and it went very quiet. :D

If you didn't cut the first part of my post of I highlighted why. Messi missed a one on one in the World Cup final in extra time, can't imagine Maradona doing that. Argentina won it in '86 with Maradona as player of the tournament... And that's what separates them.

Messi is still a great player, and some of the World's greatest haven't won a World Cup - look at the great players Netherlands have given us especially Cruyff and Van Basten, look at Puskas and Platini - I just don't think he is the greatest ever... Cruyff, Maradona, Pele are still ahead of him.

what a massive fu cking drama queen. would never get this from our ronnie.

Imagine the uproar if Ronaldo did that, the day after missing a penalty in a final. That's all he'd be remembered for, bottling it in a final and then quitting.

Can't understand why Messi would quit at 29. Like people say, I reckon he'll probably be at the next World Cup.

Always subjective when comparing different generations but should also be remembered that Maradona did similar at club level, pretty much on his own at unfashionable at the time, Napoli, dragging them to a league title. Oh and got kicked pillar to post most weeks as well.

Both great players though.
