We have a number of players who can fill this position, granted they aren't proven, but I have enough faith in our scouting, that at least one of them will step up if required. Silva wouldn't have been proven either, not in this league anyway. Mendy has something like 110 games for Nice, it's not like he's some kid just rocked up without playing a game.

ROB-THE-BLUE Posted 31 August 2016 Posted 31 August 2016 I remember feeling bemused as to why we didn't sign a striker in January. We let Kramaric leave and were linked with Musa, Remy and Biram Diouf. Thankfully we were lucky that Vardy, Leo and Okazaki stayed fit and scored goals. Just feel we are pushing our luck going into a huge season without a strong holding midfielder like N'Zonzi perhaps
STUHILL Posted 31 August 2016 Posted 31 August 2016 1 minute ago, 4everfox said: Is it just me who thinks a centre back should have been our priority? As a few posters have already mentioned we have Drinkwater, Mendy, Amartey, King, James and Kapustka who can all be utilised in the central midfield role (although one more big signing wouldn't have been harmful as Kapustka is naturally a wide player and James is apparently far from full fitness). In the centre of defence we have got Morgan and Huth as our only two competent players. Phil Jones would have been perfect. Bit harsh on Hernandez... Also we know Was can come in and do ok. And Benny is fit again and he actually looked alright when he did play. Phil Jones would not have come to sit on the bench and no way would we drop either Huth or Wes for him as they look so good together.

Weller 7 Posted 31 August 2016 Posted 31 August 2016 So what exactly have we got in midfield. Drinkwater - Unquestionably class. Mandy - Not sure he's up to this level but he is not a Kante replacement in any way shape or form. Bench cover for Drinkwater. James - Looked great before the injury but not sure he will ever be the same player again. Amartey - Looks like a great prospect but not ready for Europe yet. Twelve months of Prem action and then maybe. King - Wonderful servant to the club but lets be honest. No where near good enough at this level week in week out. So who the hell will play with Drinkwater! He's the one I feel sorry for. He's been let down big time in this transfer window. We have to go with Drinkwater and Amartey and hope to hell neither of them get injured.

As I said above, don't confuse wanting to keep improving with them thinking its a critical issue. We won the league without Slimani, his signing isn't critical... But it should be an upgrade.

Super Sli will make you happy and Adrien would also be an excellent transfer for you.

Basically writing off two players you've seen play 90 and 55 minutes of football in the centre in competitive games. Amartey has played for Copenhagen in Europe. (Copenhagen... A team we play in the champs league, and he was their best player when we signed him). And he's played for them against Bruge (a team we play in the champions league).... But he's not capable of playing against them...?!?!?

Once again we are just an injury away from a potential implosion, god help us if Morgan, Huth or Drinkwater get injured. Should have gone for Wilshere and Jones. The solution to a hypothetical injury crisis is to sign two of the most injury prone players in the country? Its frankly amazing that in a transfer window where we've broken our transfer record not once, not twice but thrice, secured nearly every key member of our squad to long term contracts and shipped out a bunch of dead wood, people still are not happy. Seeing as everyone is on the hypothetical train let me take a punt. Amartey proves to be more than an able partner for Drinkwater and the CM everybody craved that we spent £25m, £30m, £35m or however much, turns out like Inler wasting away in the U23's. How shit would that be? We have 4 CM's and possibly another (James). Generally we play with 2 and have shown no sign of switching to a 3. Another CM is a luxury and not a necessity. As for CB:- Huth Morgan Hernandez Wasilewski Benalouane No need.
The People's Hero Posted 31 August 2016 Posted 31 August 2016 Stop getting so upset. Derby have just signed Chris Weale !

Maybe competent was the wrong word but as if any of those are as good as Morgan and Huth. Hernandez looks better as a full back, Wasilewski is way past his best and I'd be surprised if Benalouane ever played for Leicester again. The competition is a lot better in centre midfield then it is at the back. I'd be more worried if Morgan or Huth got injured then if Drinkwater did.
adam1 Posted 31 August 2016 Posted 31 August 2016 I liked Weale. Anyway I am off to bed. I expect to see an announcement in the morning that we have signed Adrien Silva.....

Everyone is basing Hernandez's CB performance from one game when everyone looked shitty. I actually thought he did much better than Morgan in that game, but whatever. This guy made more interceptions in La Liga than anyone else. Simone called him the best defender in the league. Benalouane will probably play in the cups, and last season he looked decent enough when he played in them. He's probably 5th choice though and won't get CL or PL game time. Was... yes, he is past his best, he is aging... but he has an understanding with Morgan and Huth. He'll be fine if needed.
